Preludes To Praise-Devotional Reflections, Arthur Carl Piepkorn
Preludes To Praise-Devotional Reflections, Arthur Carl Piepkorn
Concordia Theological Monthly
There are three anonymous hymns in our rite which, though they arc not of divine inspiration, have received a place in the worship of the church all but totally on a par with the psalms and canticles that can unquestionably claim God as their divine Author.

The Natural Knowledge Of God, Ralph A. Bohlmann
The Natural Knowledge Of God, Ralph A. Bohlmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
This study grows out of a request for guidance from the Commission on Fraternal Organizations of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Over the years this commission has been meeting with leaders of a number of fraternal organizations in an effort both to explain our synod's position on lodgery as well as to encourage the removal of objectionable features from lodge rituals. These groups have shown readiness to make many of the ritualistic changes suggested by our commission. In one area, however, these groups refuse to yield. They insist that requiring belief in the existence of a Supreme Being of their members …
Communism And Religion In Russia And China, Walter W. Oetting
Communism And Religion In Russia And China, Walter W. Oetting
Concordia Theological Monthly
Scores of impressive books are appearing on the nature of Communism in Russia and China, on the history of Russia as background to what happened in 1917, reprints of Russian and Communist classics, and on the struggle between Christianity and Communism. A single reviewer could not hope even to list, much less review, this literature. The task that this reviewer has set for himself is to examine the "pick of the pack," especially those that have come across his desk for one reason or another. He writes this article with the intention of directing the attention of his colleagues in …
Christianity And Communism -An Ideological Comparison, Ralph L. Moellering
Christianity And Communism -An Ideological Comparison, Ralph L. Moellering
Concordia Theological Monthly
In his book Communism and Christ, Charles W. Lowry contends that we are living in a new religious age. As evidence he points to the post-World War II popular religious revival, to what he calls "a new priesthood" set up by psychiatry, to the influence of existential thought in philosophy and theology (consider Paul Tillich), and to the "collective neurosis" brought on by the crisis and anxieties of our hydrogen-missile age. "The final and conclusive proof that we have entered into a new religious era Lowry perceived in the expansion and menace of the "new universal salvation religion - Communism."
August Hermann Francke, 1663-1963, Philip J. Schoeder
August Hermann Francke, 1663-1963, Philip J. Schoeder
Concordia Theological Monthly
Why remember August Hermann Francke on the 300th anniversary of his natal year?
Certainly association and identification with Pietists and Pietism should not disqualify him for a niche in the hall of remembered saints. Though some still speak with caution and even opprobriously about Pietists and Pietism, the climate has changed especially with reference to the earlier Pietists. Much of the suspicion, detraction, and obloquy which became attached to the name and fame of Pietism stems from falsely attributing many excrescences and aberrations of later Pietism to the early founders of the movement.

Calvinism In England During The Reformation Period As Seen In The Formularies Of The Established Church, Walter Sohn
Calvinism In England During The Reformation Period As Seen In The Formularies Of The Established Church, Walter Sohn
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The object of this thesis is to trace the introduction of Calvinism into the official and unofficial formularies of the Church of England during the Reformation period. Calvinism is defined as any distinctive theological teaching advocated by John Calvin, the leader of the Reformed Church during the middle of the sixteenth century. The official formularies were the confessional statements and prescribed forms of worship ordered to be used in the established Church by the English monarch. The unofficial formularies were theological writings approved by Convocation of the English clergy. While used in the Church, they had neither the approval of …
Martin Luther And The Idea Of Monasticism, Heinz Bluhm
Martin Luther And The Idea Of Monasticism, Heinz Bluhm
Concordia Theological Monthly
Monasticism was still a major issue in the first half of the 16th century in Europe. It played a definite role in the life of many men and women. Among the famous, Desiderius Erasmus and Ulrich von Hutten left the monastery easily, even eagerly; Martin Luther on the other hand only after immense inner difficulties. Inevitable as the final break was for Luther, it caused him great anguish of soul both before and after. Hence it is hardly surprising that throughout his numerous writings there are frequent references to what was surely one of the most stirring experiences in his …
Fighter And Friend, Richard R. Caemmerer
Fighter And Friend, Richard R. Caemmerer
Concordia Theological Monthly
During the season of the Reformation Festival we do well to focus our thinking on two facets, at opposite poles and yet totally together, in the career and in the person of the great Reformer: that Luther was a fighter and that Luther was a friend. We would think about this fact obviously not just to say "How peculiar!" or "How interesting!" but in order that this fighting spirit, this friendly spirit, might become ingrained and fused in the heart and in the career of every one of us.
Luther's View Of Man In His Early German Writings, Heinz Bluhm
Luther's View Of Man In His Early German Writings, Heinz Bluhm
Concordia Theological Monthly
When Luther's first essay, Die Sieben puszpsalm, appeared in the spring of 1517, it met with instantaneous success. The reception accorded the German works of the next few years was similarly, even increasingly, enthusiastic. Martin Luther was, from his initial literary venture, easily the most widely read and influential writer in the German language in the second decade of the 16th century, from 1517 on to be exact if we ignore a brief but profound preface to his important first edition of the Theologia Germanica of the year before.

Divorce And Remarriage, Harry G. Coiner
Divorce And Remarriage, Harry G. Coiner
Concordia Theological Monthly
The written discussion which has centered around Matthew 5:31, 32; 19:9; Mark 10: 11, 12; Luke 16: 18; and 1 Corinthians 7:12-16 is certainly voluminous, sometimes biased, mostly tentative. It is our conviction that much of the labor expended through the years in an effort to develop a modus operandi for dealing with divorce and remarriage has resulted in more ambiguous conclusions than certain ones. It is also our conviction that these passages need to be studied anew by our Lutheran Church. In no area of pastoral care is there more need for clear doctrine and practice.
The Church And Mixed Marriage, Otto E. Sohn
The Church And Mixed Marriage, Otto E. Sohn
Concordia Theological Monthly
In a certain sense every marriage is a mixed marriage, inasmuch as no two people are completely identical and perfect personalities, hence do not possess the same quality and measure of desirable traits and characteristics which diminish the probability of marital conflict and the necessity of day by day adjustment. Even the most exemplary Christians have sinful natures which make them variable, doing things they should not do, not doing things they should do (Rom. 7:19), and failing to preserve flawless control of themselves, especially when unexpected crises descend upon them. Even the noblest Christian hearts are still tainted with …
Deisidaimonia, A Footnote To Acts 17:22, H. Armin Moellering
Deisidaimonia, A Footnote To Acts 17:22, H. Armin Moellering
Concordia Theological Monthly
What does St. Paul mean when he calls the Athenians δεισιδαιμονεσ-τέϱουζ in Acts 17:22? In order to understand the interpretative problem and to arrive at a reasoned conclusion, one must know something of the history of the term δεισιδαιμονια.

The Psychological Disciplines In Theological Education, Paul W. Pruyser
Concordia Theological Monthly
Much has been written during the last decade about the relevance of certain aspects of psychology and psychiatry to the professional role and work of ministers. When one surveys the massive literature which has been produced in this area of concern one is impressed at first by great topical variety. which ranges from theological critiques of psychological concepts and theories to pastoral counseling; from the psychological screening of candidates for the ministry to how pastors might deal with grief; from life situation preaching to techniques of supervision in clinical pastoral training courses.
The Power Of God's Word, Robert D. Preus
The Power Of God's Word, Robert D. Preus
Concordia Theological Monthly
If there is anything our generation of Christians needs to ponder and experience anew it is the power of God's Word. For only when we seize and are seized by the Word of God do we know the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe (Eph.1:19). And only when our faith stands in God's power do we discover what the Word of God really is (1 Cor. 2:5). Many theologians recognize the pressing necessity of speaking on this theme.

The Concept Of Hope In First Peter, Frederick Naumann
The Concept Of Hope In First Peter, Frederick Naumann
Bachelor of Divinity
Peter again relates his ethics to his certain hope. Peter is positively certain that the inheritance. is ready, prepared and preserved by God, and need only be revealed. There is no "maybe;" no "if''' in Peter's thinking. The masterpiece is under a canvas, all that is to be done is to have the canvas lifted. In this light of certain culmination of his expectation, Peter sets forth his ethics. Everything is viewed in the light of this hope
