Great Anger, Anthony Cunningham Oct 2005

Great Anger, Anthony Cunningham

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Anger has had a major hand in a history of inhumanity. In this light, some schools of thought have suggested that we do best to jettison anger entirely. However, anger, like grief, is tied to caring deeply, and as such, both emotions can speak to what is best and most beautiful about human life and character.

And The Question Became Flesh: Jesus The Catechist In The Gospel Of John, Diana Macalintal Jul 2005

And The Question Became Flesh: Jesus The Catechist In The Gospel Of John, Diana Macalintal

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The locus of encounter with Christ is the community at prayer and the Word
embodied within that community. The promulgation of the Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults could arguably be seen then as a turning point moment for the Church as it ritualized its move into the postmodern age. It is postmodern not because it relativizes or waters down faith as some might argue but because it acknowledges the relational dialogic quality of the perception and interpretation of symbol. This paper examines three pericopes from John’s Gospel that are integral to the catechumenate and explores the image of Jesus …

Gospeldharma: The Seven-Fold Sacrament Of Generous Interbeing, Paul Joseph Thoemke Oblsb Jun 2005

Gospeldharma: The Seven-Fold Sacrament Of Generous Interbeing, Paul Joseph Thoemke Oblsb

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The Buddha’s dharma of the interdependent co-arising of all phenomena (this is because that is) is the unifying concept between Christianity and Buddhism. The vast, incomprehensible interconnection of all aspects of the cosmos with every other aspect can be described as “interbeing.” Furthermore, because each new manifestation depends completely on the passing away of every previous manifestation, we may also call this interbeing, this impermanence, generosity.”

The Buddha’s dharma of interdependent co-arising reveals reality as it is; and it helps to reveal a sublime and profound unfolding of God’s relationship with the world. In light of the …

Redefining 'Unimpaired:' The Evolution Of The National Parks Mission, 1872-1933, Annamarie Mittlestadt Apr 2005

Redefining 'Unimpaired:' The Evolution Of The National Parks Mission, 1872-1933, Annamarie Mittlestadt

History Student Work

The idea of national parks has long conjured particular images for people, from the vast, majestic landscapes of Yellowstone, to the Park Service or possibly even preservation. With the overwhelming mission statement of the 21st century National Park Service, very few people know or even understand the troubled history behind the parks. The following analysis focuses on Yosemite and Yellowstone National Park, not only because of their popularity, but because they remain the oldest, largest, and most well known establishments. The current battle between use and preservation of the parks remains embedded in the histories of the two major parks, …

Torn Between Two Mothers: Indigenous Women As Spiritual Mentors In Two Novels By Mexican Women Writers, Elena Sánchez Mora Jan 2005

Torn Between Two Mothers: Indigenous Women As Spiritual Mentors In Two Novels By Mexican Women Writers, Elena Sánchez Mora

Hispanic Studies Faculty Publications

In many novels by contemporary Hispanic women writers, the estrangement between mother and daughter seems to be a constant underlying theme. There are several examples of texts in which distancing between mother and daughter renders the role of the mother ineffective, prompting the daughter to search for an alternative maternal figure.

Within Mexican narrative, I have come upon four novels with protagonists who experience this predicament, but in which all the countervailing figures are indigenous women who are servants in the middle class white households inhabited by the young female characters. For this article, I have chosen only two of …

Red Lake, White Earth And ‘Blackgowns’: The Indian Industrial Schools Of St. John’S Abbey And St. Benedict’S Monastery, 1884-1896, Thomas Reichert Jan 2005

Red Lake, White Earth And ‘Blackgowns’: The Indian Industrial Schools Of St. John’S Abbey And St. Benedict’S Monastery, 1884-1896, Thomas Reichert

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

How and more importantly, why did the Benedictines become involved in off-reservation Industrial Schools? In this thesis, it is my goal to answer these questions. The opening of the schools was the result of three factors. First, the Benedictines subscribed to the popular beliefs and stereotypes about the Indians and what should be done with them. Second, the material situation of the mission, as well as the relationship between the Benedictines and the other involved parties on the reservation, created a situation where an off-reservation venture would seem desirable. Third, the financial situation of St. John's and St. Benedict's would …

Terminator Or Super Mario: Human/Computer Hybrids, Actual And Virtual, Noreen L. Herzfeld Jan 2005

Terminator Or Super Mario: Human/Computer Hybrids, Actual And Virtual, Noreen L. Herzfeld

Theology Faculty Publications

Is a human/computer hybrid feasible: If so, in what ways would such hybridization affect our concept of what it means to be human? There are two forms of such hybridization, the actual and the virtual. Actual hybridization involves the implantation of mechanical devices in the human body. In actual hybridization the computer comes to us and to our body to enhance our functioning in our world. In virtual hybridization we go to the computer, projecting our minds into the world of cyberspace and being formed there. Perhaps the most common form of virtual hybridization is the immersion our children experience …
