Literary translation requires an understanding of cultural context: norms, behavior and cultural values. Translating culture-specific items from literary texts is therefore a very challenging task. The present paper explores translation strategies used in the transfer from Burmese into German of the book Myanmar erzählt: 25 zeitgenössiche Kurzgeschichten (25 Myanmar contemporary short stories) by Klaus R. Schröder und Georg Noack (2008), with a focus on the culture-specific challenges of translation. First, theories of translation are explained, then cultural specificity, culture-specific translation problems and strategies in culture-specific translation are described. Partnership for Change (PfC) provides programs and assistance to both urban and rural Myanmar communities to improve the economic and social opportunities for local business and community leaders. The PfC support model builds skills that lead to new economic options, especially for young adults starting new social enterprise ventures. An important aspect of the PfC community engagement model is the recognition and support of the arts and culture of the community. The Emergence Of A New Cultural Infrastructure: Lessons From Silicon Valley, Tom Borrup

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Formal organizational structures and patterns of production and distribution of culture typical in most major cities emerged with, and are patterned after, Industrial Age thinking and Eurocentric cultural forms. These modernist, hierarchical, centralized, mass-production-oriented models-that separate art producer from consumer-face unprecedented challenges. In this article I argue that urban cultural infrastructures, and the institutions and organizing principles that comprise them, are being undermined and replaced. Research into the cultural infrastructure of California's Silicon Valley finds more decentralized, non-hierarchical, participatory, and culturally-diverse patterns.
