For traditional language teaching, activities providing students with various learning routines tend to dominate the class. Though the primary goal of teaching is to have students experience the use of language, it is often detrimental if the class overemphasizes rote learning, especially for lower motivated students. Most language classes suffer from this mode of teaching as it creates tension in class and also a great deal of boredom. This may lead to negative feelings about language learning and in turn hinder learning.

This research describes beliefs about learning English as a foreign language of Thai female high school students and discusses the potential impact of these beliefs on students' expectations and strategies in English language learning. Four aspects of beliefs were studied: beliefs about the difficulty of English language learning, beliefs about foreign language aptitude, beliefs about the nature of language learning, and beliefs about communicative strategies. Questionnaires, adapted from BALLI (Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory), were used to collect the data. In addition, descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The University of Weissnichtwo, situated on the shores of Lake Wobegon, has received national attention for its championship horseshoe team, but little notice has been given to its success in providing training in English for the international students who have flocked to the campus. These students have not been attracted by the university's academic programs; its most prestigious program, research into cold-climate flax production, has little applicability in Africa, Central America, or Southeast Asia, which supply a full 20 percent of the university's entire student body.

This article aims at studying students' self-evaluation regarding their language skills and non-linguistic factors, i.e. cognitive skills, affect and IT knowledge in performing net tasks. Collaborative learning through the use of web sites and e-mail was tried out with twenty-five first year Engineering students at Chulalongkorn University Language Institute, Thailand in June 1998. The study was repeated in the same year with thirty-two first year Pharmaceutical Science students of the same institute to obtain valid and reliable conclusions. The analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data shows positive feedback of employing two net tasks to supplement the regular English courses.

This paper examines the roles, both theoretical and applied, which corpora1 play in the field of translation. The main emphasis of the paper is on the use of corpora evidence in applied translation studies, which include the teaching of translation in translator training and in foreign language learning. The paper also looks at the use of corpora as valuable resources for translators. Different types of corpora and their applications are reviewed in detail. In the end, the paper discusses the key success factors of corpus-driven translation.

There have been many studies of Genre Analysis justifying the pedagogical implications of the Discourse Analysis system in the ESP classroom. This paper explores the use of peer assessments of oral presentations in teaching and evaluation. The experiment was conducted on undergraduate and graduate university students of communication courses. While the undergraduates were asked to evaluate their peers' oral presentations using a rather structured assessment sheet, the graduate students used a relatively open feedback sheet. A comparison was made between the peer ratings and teacher ratings. It was found that the graduate students differed significantly from the teachers' ratings and other peer ratings. The undergraduates, however, displayed a tendency towards uniformity and towards a broad agreement with the teacher ratings. The …

Writing is a language skill most EFL students have problems with. This is due to several factors such as the inherent complexity of the skill itself, a lack of constant practice and inadequate or inappropriate corrective feedback. This paper reports on an exploratory study on writing feedback strategies in which a three-step procedure, that is peer comment, self-evaluation and teacher reformulation, is proposed. Results revealed a positive attitude in the students towards this collaborative feedback strategy. Students demonstrated their skills as critical readers and evaluators. Suggestions and implications are also discussed.

This study examined the use of peer feedback and teacher-student conferencing activities in an English writing class with adult learners. It surveyed the learners' attitudes toward and their expectations from these feedback types and documented potential problems of applying these feedback activities in an adult learning situation. หลักเกณฑ์การเขียนใหม่ในภาษาเยอรมัน : ข้อดีและปัญหาสำหรับผู้เรียนคนไทย ตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ 1998 เป็นต้นมา ได้มีการนําหลักเกณฑ์การเขียนใหม่ในภาษาเยอรมัน มาใช้อย่างเป็นทางการในประเทศสหพันธ์สาธารณรัฐเยอรมนี ในประเทศที่ใช้ภาษา เยอรมันเป็นภาษาราชการอีกสองประเทศคือ สาธารณรัฐออสเตรีย และสมาพันธรัฐสวิส หลักเกณฑ์การเขียนใหม่นี้มีผลบังคับใช้ตามข้อตกลงร่วมกันระหว่างสามประเทศนี้เช่นกัน บทความนี้อธิบายหลักการของอักขรวิธีภาษาเยอรมัน และวิเคราะห์ให้เห็นถึงทั้งข้อดีและ ปัญหาของหลักเกณฑ์การเขียนใหม่ของภาษาเยอรมันในแง่ของการนำหลักเกณฑ์เหล่านี้ ไปใช้สอนแก่ผู้เรียนคนไทยและการนําหลักเกณฑ์ใหม่ไปใช้ในการเขียน

การพัฒนาละครแบบขนบนิยม : กรณีศึกษาจากงานละครชาวบ้าน บทความวิจัยนี้ ต้องการนำเสนอแนวคิดในการอนุรักษ์งานศิลปะการละครแบบ ขนบนิยม โดยมุ่งนำเสนอแนวคิดของการพัฒนา ปรับเปลี่ยนสาระ รูปแบบ และวิธีการ แสดงเพื่อให้งานศิลปะการละครนั้นคงอยู่ อย่างมีชีวิต ดำรงไว้ซึ่งความหมายและความงาม ทางศิลปะ อันเป็นที่ยอมรับของผู้ชมร่วมสมัย ในบทความวิจัยนี้มุ่งเน้นไปที่ละครรำชาวบ้าน โดยจะยกเป็นตัวอย่างให้เห็นถึงวิธีการที่ศิลปินชาวบ้านจัดกระบวนการพัฒนา ปรับงานของตนเพื่อให้สามารถคงอยู่รอดมาตลอด 2 ศตวรรษนี้ และอิทธิพลของละครรำ ชาวบ้านที่ยังคงครอบงำรสนิยมในการเสพมหรสพของคนไทย จึงสามารถมองเห็นได้ว่า สาระ ความสุกสนานอันเป็นหัวใจของมหรสพชาวบ้านนั้น ส่งต่อไปถึงงานละครร่วมสมัย ได้แก่ ละครเวที และละครโทรทัศน์

ซิลเวีย แพล็ธ และ เท็ด ฮิวส์จากอีกมุมมอง นับตั้งแต่ซิลเวีย แพล็ธตัดสินใจจบชีวิตของเธอในปี 1963 เท็ด ฮิวล์ ผู้สามีเลือกที่จะ ไม่แสดงความคิดเห็นใดๆ เกี่ยวกับเหตุการณ์ดังกล่าว ความเงียบนี้เองเป็นเหตุหนึ่งที่ ทำให้นักวิจารณ์วรรณกรรมตามแนวทฤษฎีสิทธิเสมอภาคสตรีประนามว่า เขาเป็นสาเหตุ สำคัญของการกระทำอัตวินิบาตกรรมของภรรยา และหลังจากนั้นอีก 34 ปี ฮิวส์ได้ตีพิมพ์ ผลงานที่ถือได้ว่าเป็นวรรณกรรมเชิงอัตชีวประวัติ ชื่อ Birthday Letters ซึ่งถือว่าเป็น ผลงานชิ้นสุดท้ายของเขา ผลงานดังกล่าวแสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างแพล็ธกับฮิวส์จาก มุมมองฝ่ายชายในกวีนิพนธ์ 88 บท ฮิวส์แสดงให้เห็นว่าเขากับภรรยามีความรัก ความ เข้าใจ ความสนใจร่วมกันและปัญหาเฉกเช่นสามีภรรยาทั่วไป แต่ปัญหาที่เกาะกุมใจแพล็ธ และทำให้เธอหาทางออกด้วยความตาย เป็นสิ่งเรื้อรังที่เกิดขึ้นก่อนที่เธอจะใช้ชีวิตร่วมกับ เขา และเธอไม่ต้องการออกจากปัญหานั้น แม้ว่าเขาจะได้พยายามช่วยเหลือเธอแล้วก็ตาม

ดอะแค็ตเชอร์อินเดอะไรย์ : ขบถวัยรุ่นห้าสิบปีให้หลัง เดอะแค็ตเชอร์อินเดอะไรย์ นวนิยายชื่อก้องเรื่องแรกของ เจ ดี แซลินเจอร์ นักประพันธ์ชาวอเมริกันมีอายุครบ 50 ปีในปีนี้ เมื่อแรกตีพิมพ์ในปี ค.ศ. 1951 นวนิยายเรื่องนี้สร้างปรากฏการณ์ในวงวรรณกรรม และเป็นที่ประทับใจของนักอ่าน โดยเฉพาะวัยรุ่นที่มีความรู้สึกสอดคล้องกับโฮลเดน คอลฟิลด์ ตัวละครเอกที่โหยหา ความบริสุทธิ์ในวัยเยาว์ และเหนื่อยหน่ายชิงชังกับความจอมปลอมที่อยู่รอบตัว ตลอดเวลาที่ผ่านมาความนิยมที่ว่านี้มิได้ลดน้อยถอยลงแต่อย่างใด ดังจะเห็นได้จาก การที่ผู้อ่านมากมายยังพยายามที่จะค้นหาสิ่งที่อาจจะเป็นคำตอบได้จากหนังสือเล่มนี้ อยู่ต่อไป

Critical Thinking And Culture, Yoshimi Matsuda

The major purpose of this paper is to first argue that our thinking in general is adapted to cultural and socio-political environment. The argument will be helped by the connectionist approach that emphasizes learning and therefore nature and nurture interaction. Second, it argues that since most of our thinking or reasoning is cultural product, our evaluation of modes of thinking, too, is influenced by our familiar ways of thinking/reasoning. Third, it delineates fallibility of our cognitive processes themselves and describes some of known cognitive errors in reasoning. Finally, it discusses ways in which critical thinking may be enhanced.
