JBS-USA is delighted to announce that the celebratory year of our 20th anniversary will kick off with a mini-conference in Washington, D.C. November 17th and 18th along with the issue of a very special members-only CD. We will begin on Friday the 17th by attending a rehearsal of Washington Concert Opera’s presentation of Bellini’s La straniera at the Lissner Auditorium. Those of us who attended this company’s Semiramide a couple of years ago, and the D.C. members who regularly attend their productions, can attest to the very high level of performance we can expect.

Twenty Years For The Jussi Bjorling Museum

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

The Jussi Bjorling Museum in Borlange opened on October 22, 1994 and thus celebrates its 20th anniversary this autumn. In 2004, the I 0th anniversary was embellished by the Jussi Bjorling Congress, arranged by all three Bjorling societies in Stockholm and Borlange. This brought many foreign members to the museum and one of the speakers, the prominent British voice expert John Steane, called it "the best of all singer museums''.

We Gather Together: September 9-10 Meetings In New York City, Dan Shea

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

For members of the Jussi Bjorling Society, the anniversary date of September 9 this year was more than usually fraught with memories of that 1960 day, whether that had been experienced personally or was simply a historical fact associated with a favorite singer's life story. To mark the occasion, there had been anniversary radio programs the previous weekend from Vermont and California, see for instance the interesting list of selections played during Peter Fox Smith's 4-hour tribute on the afternoon of September 4, at http:// www.vpr.net/episode/49386/. Mr. Smith conducts an anniversary program like this every year on the Saturday preceding …

Save This Date! Our August 20, 2000, Mini-Conference In Nyc Is On!, Dan Shea

How can our Jussi Bjorling Society NOT meet on August 20th to celebrate the simultaneous 70th anniversary of Jussi's debut in his first major operatic role, Don Ottavio, and the 40th anniversary of his last public concert? We've decided that we must go ahead with a one-day conference in Manhattan.

Everything You Make With Your Hands, John Alba Cutler Jan 2021

Everything You Make With Your Hands, John Alba Cutler

Todo lo que haces con tus manos tiene valor she said, and we knew what she meant. That Christmas card of glitter glue and crayon. That yarn potholder born from a tiny loom like a lute. Even the Pinewood Derby car, blue with a white stripe down the middle, wobbling its way into seventeenth place. We knew the making of it was the point, what gave it worth.

The Lead-Up To The Dedication Of The Jerusalem Center, David B. Galbraith

I’ve been asked to focus on the construction period of the Jerusalem Center rather than the student program that, at this point in time, is the heart and soul of the Center. My wife, Frieda, and I lived for twenty years in Israel, where we also raised our family of five children. We were blessed to witness some marvelous miracles while living there, but none more marvelous than those that were intimately linked to the Center. I had the great opportunity to be personally involved with the story of the Center that follows here.

It is great to be here with so many friends to celebrate this special event. When I first arrived at the Jerusalem Center in 1994 and assumed responsibility for, among other areas, the Center’s security, I inherited from my predecessor a file with policies for how to deal with potential threats. Here are some of those policies: Procedure to evacuate the building in case of a bomb threat

Procedure to deal with riots at the lower gate

Procedure to deal with ultra-Orthodox demonstrations at the upper gate

A heartfelt welcome to all.

It is a privilege to participate in this symposium marking the thirtieth anniversary of the 1989 dedication of the Jerusalem Center. It is also a privilege to have been a repeating member of the BYU Jerusalem faculty since 1982, two years before the ceremony which broke ground for the Jerusalem Center in the summer of 1984. I vividly remember watching the various phases of the Center’s construction (fig. 1) and being among the first to live and teach in the beautiful new building when it was occupied by students in 1987.

The Jerusalem Center At Thirty, James R. Kearl

BYU Studies Quarterly

I first “met” James E. Faust in June 1989, when, a month after the Jerusalem Center was dedicated, he called my home. BYU president Jeffrey R. Holland had appointed me an associate academic vice president in late February, with a portfolio that included the university’s international and undergraduate programs, but this assignment was set aside when he was called to the Seventy in April and Rex Lee was named president of BYU. In June, Rex invited me to stay on in that same role with the portfolio President Holland had given me, which on the international side included administrative oversight …

Burials In The Tomb Of The Swiss-American Society New Orleans, John Geiser Iii Jan 2009

Burials In The Tomb Of The Swiss-American Society New Orleans, John Geiser Iii

Swiss American Historical Society Review

On July 3, 1871, an improved constitution was adopted and a burial ground in Greenwood Cemetery was purchased. The yellow fever epidemic of 1878 caused the entire plot of ground to be filled and compelled action on the building of a suitable vault, which was completed and consecrated with appropriate ceremonies on October 5, 1879.
