Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the military architecture of the Ayyubid period (1171-1250) in Egypt and its most important extant structures. We will discuss the fortifications of Cairo (Cairo citadel and the walls) and the two extant citadels in Sinai: the citadel of al Gindi in Wdi Sedr and the citadel of Salah al Din near Taba. We will only discuss the architectural forms and historical settings, but in our discussion we will contest the current accepted perceptions about the military fortifications of Cairo and present alternate theories to numerous issues.

Among the various cinematic themes which have been studied over the past several years is that of the image of women. Women, taken as cinematic figures, evoke multiple images of a cultural and social discourse and draw attention to gender and family relations in a broader sense in a specific society. Moreover, Egyptian cinema has been a major point of reference for Egyptian culture in this country. It has shaped and expressed the changing of scenarios of modern Egypt to an extent that no preceding art form could ever achieve. It has influenced the way in which people perceive various …

The Introduction Of Military Slavery: A Political Expedient, Brian Eastwood Jun 2005

The Introduction Of Military Slavery: A Political Expedient, Brian Eastwood

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Military slavery constituted one of the most important institutions in medieval Islamic history. Most research concerning military slavery concentrates on the Mamluk dynasty, while relatively little research explores the beginning of the institution and the reasons for its introduction. Those works that concentrate on military slavery or the 'Abbasid time period either use it as an example for other arguments or do not provide enough detail to create a complete argument. As a result, the origins of an institution that affected almost a thousand years of Islamic history are not well understood. To understand the emergence of military slavery, primary …

Cannibalism: The Tempest And Robinson Crusoe, Yara Amr El Masry Jun 2005

Cannibalism: The Tempest And Robinson Crusoe, Yara Amr El Masry

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the significance of cannibalism and its appearance as a literary motif with the rise of empire and its presence and transformation in more recent literary works. In colonial literature the idea of cannibalism often arises to describe the behaviors and rituals of native tribes and peoples. But most importantly it is employed by writers to describe the colonial settler's biggest fear of that native 'other' and his main difference from the conception of a civilized self, as suggest by such canonical works as Shakespeare's The Tempest and Danniel Dofoe's Robinson Crusoe.

Institutionalization And Reform: The Case Of The National Democratic Party In Egypt, Safinaz El Tarouty

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the National Democratic Party in Egypt (NDP). It assesses the internal dynamics and reforms of the party between 2000 and 2004 and asks to what extent these reforms have influenced the nature and institutionalization of the party. Starting from the emergence of the Egyptian republic, it traces the rise and development of the consecutive single parties under Nasser and the creation of the NDP under Sadat in 1978. This thesis suggests that the reforms of 2000 do not appear to have significantly increased the level of institutionalization of Egypt’s persistently dominant party. It argues that the reforms …

Beckett's Wager: A Pascalian Reading Of Waiting For Godot, Zainab Juzer Najmuddin

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The inspiration for the thesis, "Beckett's Wager: A Pascalian Reading of Waiting for Godot" was found in an article entitled: "History Electrified into Anagogy: A reading of waiting for Godot", by David Stempel. Stempel proposed an anagogic reading of the play, and suggested as a conclusion, that the waiting signified waiting on the safe side of Pascal's wager. In this thesis, the validity of his approach and conclusion are examined.

Women As A Symbol Of Cultural Conflict: The Compatability Of Egypt's Shari'a Derived Personal Status Laws With Its International Obligations, And Prospects For Reform, Jasmin Moussa

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the compatibility of Shari'a-derived personal status laws in Egypt with the international legal obligation to eliminate gender discrimination (specifically in the area of family relations). In Egypt, the Shari'a-derived personal status law for Sunni Muslims governs family relations, including marriage, divorce, child custody and successions, and have been frequently criticized for discriminating against women. However, this body of law is not immutable, it has proven flexible over the centuries, and has accommodated many changes in society.

As such, an important question is: are Egypt's personal status laws reconcilable with its international obligations? If not, how can they …

The Spiral Of The Self: Coleridge's Conversation Poems, Naglaa Mohamed El Baz May 2005

The Spiral Of The Self: Coleridge's Conversation Poems, Naglaa Mohamed El Baz

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Coleridge's Conversation Poems lacked due attention from literary critics and scholars for ages. They are original compositions which have their sources in early poetic traditions of the 18th century. They manifest Coleridge's ability to experiment with traditional forms and introduce a new genre, which is more simple in style, while rich in philosophical and psychological depth. The unity between form and content, as seen in these poems, was a phenomenal occurrence in their time, while their spiral structure enables the poet to express his poetic thought with all its complexities. The poems expose the double facets of the poet's self …

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The buildings of the different Islamic dynasties in Egypt with their great cultural and aesthetic significance have survived and remained functional despite numerous natural as well as man-made disasters. This was possible not only because of the high structural engineering knowledge and construction techniques with which they were built, but also due to the existence of the waqf system, which was not merely a system of endowments for charitable and pious causes, such as constructing mosques and schools but also a system concerned with maintenance and repair. Its main aim was the upkeep of the charitable act and the benefit …

Egyptian Political Cartoons: Evolution And Impact As Seen By Cartoonists Themselves, Rania Mohamed Saleh

The power of Egyptian political cartoonists is immense. By means of their simple drawings, cartoonists can reach the mind of the people in less time than the political leader does via speeches. This study looks at the role of political cartoons in depicting major events, developments, and trends (e/d/ts) in Egypt. Through a series of Delphi questionnaires, these e/d/ts were determined by 23 political cartoonists, who also recorded their perspective regarding the impact of cartoons on the …
