Interpreting Summer In The Parks In The National Capital Area Of The National Park Service, Brendan J. Kane

Human Movement Sciences & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Washington D.C. has witnessed many watershed events throughout the history of the United States of America. One of these events was the Summer in the Parks (SITP) program organized by the National Park Service (NPS) from 1968-1976. Summer in the Parks was a community-based series of events including concerts, park visits, and exhibitions designed to quell racial tensions and promote park usage. Researchers have begun chronicling SITP, but have yet to explore how the story of SITP is conveyed by park interpreters to visitors and subsequently what themes are shared to inform public understanding of the historic relationship between NPS …

A Narrative Approach To The Barcarolles For Solo Piano By Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), Matthew T. Pope

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) was one of the most influential composers in France at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. Through his compositions and roles as professor, and later, director of the Paris Conservatoire, Fauré was instrumental in the development of twentieth-century French music; shaping “the core of the first wave of French composers to be wholly ‘twentieth-century’” (Duchen, 2000).

Fauré’s compositions span 121 opuses and his works for voice and chamber ensemble are well known amongst singers and chamber musicians alike. However, his name and works for solo piano are unfamiliar amongst performing pianists. This …

Framing Students’ Reflective Interactions Based On Photos, Marije Ten Brink, Frank M. Nack, Ben A.M. Schouten

Learn X Design Conference Series

Critical reflection, addressing students’ attitude, beliefs and values related to pressing topics in the world, plays a crucial role in developing ethical sensitiveness and critical design literacy in design education. Critical reflection is provoked by discussing self-made photos, as is demonstrated in the research method Photovoice. This paper considers Photovoice in design education for its ability to foster learning through self-guided critical reflective interactions with peers based on self-made photos. Research on how to support this is lacking. This paper addresses this gap by studying students engaging in self-guided Photovoice assignments. Results consist of adapted steps for Photovoice in education …

Pathways Of Herminutical Evolution In Modern Western Thought, أوريدة عبود Jul 2021

Pathways Of Herminutical Evolution In Modern Western Thought, أوريدة عبود

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

This research aims to illuminate the term hermeneutics, which was closely related to interpretation in Western thought, as well as highlighting the most important paths of its development, starting with "Schleiermacher", which confirmed that the hermapnoteka is a way to reveal the structure of descriptive internal texts and their cognitive function and search for the facts contained therein. It is suggested that a note of interpretation be the basis for the interpretation of all forms of writing in the humanities based on a methodology that moves from understanding specific specific texts to interpretation of all texts. While Heidegger sees that …

The Problem Of Intentionality And Implicit Interpretation In Communication: Pragmatic Approach, مليكة بلقاسمي, صالح مسعود

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

If Pragmatism is an in-depth knowledge of the components of the discourse process, through knowledge of the methods and mechanisms by which sayings are formulated and interpreted, and if language is a key element in forming discourse to achieve communication. The biggest challenge facing Pragmatism is describing the process of interpretation, adjusting concepts, and defining the mechanisms to reach the intention of communicating any saying, and among these concepts the implications of saying.

Since the discourse was originally conducted through linguistic and non-linguistic elements, the efforts of the Pragmatic researchers were distributed in order to create general laws for …

The Hermeneutics Of Exile: A Perusal Of The Vision Exile In Mahmoud Darwish's Verse, بسام قطوس Jul 2021

The Hermeneutics Of Exile: A Perusal Of The Vision Exile In Mahmoud Darwish's Verse, بسام قطوس

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

Mahmoud Darwish has constantly occupied himself with exile and its severity and weightiness on the sensitive psyche by progressively delving into the culture of pain while closely observing internal as well as external exile. Despite the fact that external exile constitutes a complete break-up with the geography of affect and a serious fracture in the autobiography, internal exile, which resides in the poetic, sensitive self, surpasses external exile because it has no spatial boundaries when it crouches upon a person's chest, a person who has a different vision of life, the world, and existence. How did Darwish meditate exile? How …

Elements For Pragmatic Semiotics: The Situation As A Locus For Meaning, Al-Saiid Al-Kaiz Jul 2021

Elements For Pragmatic Semiotics: The Situation As A Locus For Meaning, Al-Saiid Al-Kaiz

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

The author defines meaning as the outcome of a confrontation between a set of possible interpretations and a situation. First of all, by exploring both Peirce and Wittgensteins's contributions, he recalls the foundations of such pragmatic semiotics. Then, from Whitehead's notion of "event", he separates out the concept of "semiotic situations". Next, he defines the grammatical, syntaxic and interpretative elements that compose semiotics. Finally, as an illustration, he suggests we consider the possible contributions of pragmatic semiotics to esthetics

“Without Obscuring Deeper Truths:” Interpreting Slavery And Jefferson At Monticello, Andrew Miles

Masters Theses, 2020-current

This thesis examines the paradigmatic shift in interpretation that occurred at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello during the 1980s and 1990s. For decades, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation presented the site as a marvel of architecture, décor, as well as exemplifying Jefferson’s tranquil domestic life and intellectual talents. Beginning in the 1980s, the Foundation began to address slavery at the site. Chapter one introduction of slavery interpretation during this period. Early attempts to interpret slavery became intertwined with the Foundation’s positive portrayal of Jefferson before becoming more varied and provocative in the 1990s. Chapter two examines the parallel evolution in Jefferson scholarship, …

Aiming To Reenact: The Efficacy Of Military Living History As A Learning Tool, Leah T. Glenn

Museum Studies Theses

People around the world have been fascinated with recreating the past since antiquity. Over the past century, however, the presentation of historical information using various forms of human interaction and animation has gained increasing attention, at least in the historic site community if not largely accepted among academic historians. Utilizing a number of non-traditional tools to create a multisensory experience for visitors, this “living” history aims at entertaining the public while providing insights into the past not easily gained through more academic means. Further, there have been many sites, particularly those with a military theme, that have chosen to utilize …

Stories From Both Sides Of The Hedge: A History Of And Digital Exhibit For The National Hansen's Disease Museum, Laura Turner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The national leprosarium of the United States, located in Carville, Louisiana, started as the Louisiana Leper Home in 1894. Since Louisiana contained the largest endemic population in the contiguous United States of people suffering from leprosy, or Hansen’s disease as it would later be known, and maintained a successful institution dedicated to the care of such patients, the federal government purchased the leprosarium for national use in 1921. Although the national leprosarium was closed as a hospital in 1999, a small analog museum located on site preserves the history of the facility, the lives of the former patients, and tireless …

History, Nationalism, And Public Opinion: The Memorialization Of George Mason, Kasandra Fager

Honors Projects

The George Mason Memorial , built on the National Mall in 2002, captures the accomplishments of George Mason, a Founding Father, author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, and he refused to sign the U.S. Constitution. Identifying Mason's history and exploring the motivations and struggles of the creation of the memorial opens a conversation for public opinion regarding the memorial's physical manifestation. The height of the Jefferson Memorial, the height of the George Washington obelisk, and the beauty of the Lincoln Memorial is seen as a testament of their god-like status in American history. So, where does this leave Mason’s …

Paul Ricoeur And Biblical Hermeneutics: Narrative, Genre, And Self, Collin Angell Apr 2021

Paul Ricoeur And Biblical Hermeneutics: Narrative, Genre, And Self, Collin Angell

Senior Theses

In short, this thesis seeks to develop a biblical hermeneutic centered on one central axis, based on the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur. That central axis is narrative. The Bible is written in various genres, ranging from prophecy to wisdom to hymn. The goal of this thesis is first to show how a biblical hermeneutic that treats narrative as the central mode of discourse informs a better understanding of the other biblical genres of discourse, and thus of the Bible as a whole. Furthermore, this thesis takes an existentialist direction by taking the narrative-centered biblical hermeneutic and deriving from it a …

Emulating The "Country Fiddler": A Performance Analysis Of Fiddle Parodies And Impressions In Charles Ives's Second Violin Sonata, Emily Vold Weiss Feb 2021

Emulating The "Country Fiddler": A Performance Analysis Of Fiddle Parodies And Impressions In Charles Ives's Second Violin Sonata, Emily Vold Weiss

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In his violin sonatas, Charles Ives frequently parodies fiddling style, both through overt quotes of fiddle tunes, as well as inventive compositional devices that mimic the fiddler’s style of bowing, ornamenting a melody, or generally rustic performance. Given the breadth of these fiddling allusions, it is important that violinists who perform Ives’s sonatas understand the distinctive aesthetics of fiddle performance, including the numerous ways in which it diverges from classical performance. In this dissertation, I survey pedagogical writings on fiddling, notated tunes, and recorded fiddling performances in an effort to characterize the performance practices of fiddlers from Ives’s native New …

Chapter 2 discusses Deborah’s role as a judge and determines the text supports identifying her with this title, and chapter 3 does the same …
