George W. Norris's Persuasion In The Campaign For The Unicameral Legislature, Phillip K. Tompkins Jul 1957

George W. Norris's Persuasion In The Campaign For The Unicameral Legislature, Phillip K. Tompkins

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The people of forty-seven states in this country are governed by bicameral or two-house legislatures. The people of the forty-eighth, Nebraskans, are governed by a unicameral or one-house legislature.

On November 6, 1934, the people of Nebraska provided by amendment to their state constitution, a one-house legislature to be composed of between thirty and fifty members to be elected on a non-partisan ballot. The number of solons was later set at forty-three, and 1957 marked the twentieth anniversary of the first unicameral session in Nebraska.

Senator George W. Norris is generally regarded by all as the father of the unicameral …

The History Of Montpelier From 1864 To 1925, A. Mckay Rich May 1957

The History Of Montpelier From 1864 To 1925, A. Mckay Rich

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There have been many histories written on the great movements of American History and most states have had their histories, but almost endless localities have been neglected. Yet it is in the localities that we find the greatest stories and problems of the states, nations, and world in their embryonic stages. There is no better place to begin a realization of the heritage of America than in the story of one's own locality. It is for these reasons that I have chosen to write this paper upon the history of Montpelier, Idaho.

An Investigation Of The History Of The Virginia Manufactory Of Arms, James N. Haskett May 1957

An Investigation Of The History Of The Virginia Manufactory Of Arms, James N. Haskett

Honors Theses

The first years of freedom were not calm ones for the people of the new Republic. This was as true in Virginia as elsewhere. in the State itself there was the ever present danger of slave insurrection and the Wars of the French Revolution which raged in Europe were in grave danger of spreading into this hemisphere. This situation caused the State to make provisions to secure four thousand stands of farms for its militia in 1796. This proved to be a very difficult task, for the European hostilities had seriously limited the amount of arms available.

Though Virginia had …

With Lamps Burning, M. Grace Mcdonald Osb Jan 1957

With Lamps Burning, M. Grace Mcdonald Osb

Saint Benedict’s Monastery Books

It is the purpose of this book to trace the growth of the Convent of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, from its establishment to the present time. In doing so, the author has attempted to show how a frontier country modified the character of an Old World Benedictine convent with its centuries of tradition, and how at the same time this religious community influenced in its turn the cultural and religious life of Minnesota and the Midwest. The author has found it necessary, therefore, to describe the environment – national, political, and religious – into which the sisters ventured. …

George Edward Percy Careless: His Contributions To The Musical Culture Of Utah And The Significance Of His Life And Works, Howard Hoggan Putnam Jan 1957

George Edward Percy Careless: His Contributions To The Musical Culture Of Utah And The Significance Of His Life And Works, Howard Hoggan Putnam

Theses and Dissertations

Through study of the conditions of the past one is often able to appreciate the present a great deal more. Particularly does this seem true when one looks into the early musical activities in our State of Utah. Most people are aware of the great amount of musical activities existing at the present time in Utah, but many fail to stop and realize the background of work and effort applied to bring these musical experiences before the public. Many fail to realize the pioneering work done by individuals to advance music to its present degree of performance. Names such as …

John Elliott Tullidge: The Influence Of His Life And Works On The Musical Culture Of Utah, Virgil H. Camp Jan 1957

John Elliott Tullidge: The Influence Of His Life And Works On The Musical Culture Of Utah, Virgil H. Camp

Theses and Dissertations

John Elliott Tullidge was one of a group of early musicians that exerted a considerable influence on the culture of Utah. He was a gentlemen well trained in the musical arts and intensely proud of his profession.

He was born November 5, 1807, a son of Edward and Mary Elliott Tullidge, in Weymouth, Dorsetshire, England. His parents were wealthy and realized the value of an education, and he was given the privilege of studying with the finest teachers of his day. He sang at a very early age in church choirs. Many positions were granted him both as a performer …

Music History Of The Salt Lake Theatre, The Formative Years: 1862-1870, Alfred S. Morris Jan 1957

Music History Of The Salt Lake Theatre, The Formative Years: 1862-1870, Alfred S. Morris

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to bring to light as much of the music as possible, all the performers that could be recorded, and sufficient audience reaction to indicate the musical preferences of the area in order to provide an accurate, detailed account of the early years in the Salt Lake Theatre, 1862 - 1870. There was also the desire to present these things in such a way that they would be reliable, factual, complete, and still, if possible, interesting. An attempt was made to capture the spirit of the times, to make the characters "live," to transport the …

History Of The Japan Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1901-1924, Murray L. Nichols Jan 1957

History Of The Japan Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1901-1924, Murray L. Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work is of course to fulfill thesis requirements, but more important to me is a desire that those who read it may gain a greater understanding of the mission in Japan. The membership of the church seems to have shared the traditional American opinion that the Far East is of little consequence in our affairs, and have given the area little attention. Missionaries have been and still are reluctant to go there; feelings of failure have persisted because of the early experiences in Japan. However, those who have seriously given their attention to missionary labors in …

An Early History Of Milford Up To Its Incorporation As A Town, George A. Horton Jr. Jan 1957

An Early History Of Milford Up To Its Incorporation As A Town, George A. Horton Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The first known party of white men who entered the area that became Utah included a Franciscan Friar, Silvestre Velez de Escalante. This expedition passed through the Milford Valley in the fall of 1776 and it was when they were camped at San Brigida, near or on the present site of Milford, that the important decision to turn back to Sante Fe was made.

Near the hot springs which are 15 or 20 miles farther south, Escalante recorded that the territory of the bearded Indians they had first encountered at the Sevier River extended to that point. It is not …
