Racial Protest, Identity, Words And Form In Maya Angelou's "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings", Pierre A. Walker

Pierre Walker

There is difficulty in critically reading African American literature as apolitical text; all create a political impact whether this is the initial and conscious motive or not. Maya Angelou's autobiography is one such case. Though written in response to an aesthetic challenge - that an autobiography cannot be written as literature (from the Formalist/New Critics point of view) - Angelou's organic unity became a vehicle for her political protest. A critical reading shows how she was able to achieve this.

Greek Popular Music In An American Cafe, Nancy Sultan Aug 1995

Greek Popular Music In An American Cafe, Nancy Sultan

Nancy Sultan

In my last contribution to Laografia (May/June 1994), I wrote about xenitiá and the poetics of pain associated with emigration in Greece. I examined some modern Greek songs along with some ancient Greek poetry to illustrate the long tradition of negativity associated with the idea of xenitiá. In this issue I will approach this same topic from a different angle; I present some results of field research that I conducted in 1987-88 with a group of Greek musicians who performed weekly at the Middle East Café in Cambridge, MA.

Fraternal studies are adjacent to gender studies -- fraternal societies have often been exclusively male or female, and research into such societies inevitably raises questions of gender. This review of Stern's landmark book sustains that position.

Ìgbò Enwē Ezè: Monarchical Power Vs The Democratic Ideal In Igbo Oral Narratives (Chapter 5), Chukwuma Azuonye Dec 1994

Ìgbò Enwē Ezè: Monarchical Power Vs The Democratic Ideal In Igbo Oral Narratives (Chapter 5), Chukwuma Azuonye

Chukwuma Azuonye

Azuonye sets out, through the representation of kings in Igbo tales, a picture on the one hand of legitimate authority and on the other of the abuse of power, two sides of the same coin. His discussion is directed along two lines. First, and most directly, he examines the nature of the picture of power relations painted in the tales insofar as it presents a 'democratic ideal'. Second, Azuonye sees the painting of that picture as part of the propagation of competing visions, 'the power of oral literature to sustain, through the selective process of mythic filtering, a particular type …

Past-On Stories: History, Ontology, And The Magically Real -- Morrison And Allende, On Call, P. Foreman Dec 1994

Past-On Stories: History, Ontology, And The Magically Real -- Morrison And Allende, On Call, P. Foreman

P. Gabrielle Foreman

The relation between ontology and naming is explicitly figured in both Isabel Allende's House of the Spirits and Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon. Morrison locates the defining power in speech and listening, survival skills quite distinct from talking and passive hearing. Allende subverts the Adamic power of literal naming and so posits a new genesis. In both novels, women become the site of a history that survives and so nurtures the present.

Building Target Language Oral Skills Through Drama, Chamkaur Gill Dec 1994

Building Target Language Oral Skills Through Drama, Chamkaur Gill

Chamkaur Gill

Extract:  When learners start a target language (TL) course, they are normally ".....quite unprepared for the challenge of a foreign language situation, full of self-doubt.." (Dougill 1987: 146). They feel a sense of unease and uncertainty as they wrestle with the new sounds and structures. They find it difficult to convey messages in the same spontaneous fashion that they can in their own languages. As they stutter and stammer in the foreign language (FL), it is natural for them to experience a sense of failure, thus resulting in a loss of confidence.
