Approaches To Composition In Selected Directing Texts: A Structural Analysis And Assessment, Kathryn C. Dodele
Approaches To Composition In Selected Directing Texts: A Structural Analysis And Assessment, Kathryn C. Dodele
Dissertations and Theses
Directing texts are inadequate in their various approaches to teaching the concepts of stage-composition. The goal of this thesis was to show that, for an approach to stage composition to be judged adequate, it must systematically provide the student of directing with a firm grounding in design and compositional principles as they relate to the total stage picture.
Nineteen texts were studied and their presentations of compositional principles were analyzed. Eight texts are included in an in-depth structural analysis. The texts analyzed are Fundamentals of Play Directing by Alexander Dean, The Art of Play Production by John Dolman, Play Direction …

H. S. Chamberlain And The Bayreuth Kulturkreis: A Study In Ideology, David George Otness
H. S. Chamberlain And The Bayreuth Kulturkreis: A Study In Ideology, David George Otness
Dissertations and Theses
Houston Stewart Chamberlain (1855-1927) was born an Englishman but adopted Germany as his home. Chamberlain was a publicist for fin de siècle ideas about art and politics which were tempered by both late nineteenth century Imperialism and by World War One. As an old man he endorsed Adolf Hitler and has been credited as an important synthesizer for the ideology of National Socialism.
This study examines Chamberlain's life in terms of his involvement with art and politics. It utilizes his work as a popularizer and his conversion into an exponent of Deutschtum to discuss broad social questions. While it is …

This study brings together in a single volume facts and opinions not previously consolidated on the subject of Oregon's provisional government. Previous writings or citations about the government were in the context of larger or different areas of interest. The main areas of concentration in the thesis include the political events of the government in session and the public's knowledge of these events. Also examined are the direction of government, the electoral process, and the newspaper coverage of the period.
The extant journals of the government are the primary sources for the proceedings of the sessions. Public opinion and awareness …

The Effect Of Visual Feedback On Vocal Pitch Matching, Anita R. Herron
The Effect Of Visual Feedback On Vocal Pitch Matching, Anita R. Herron
Dissertations and Theses
A review of the literature on the inaccurate singer provided strong evidence that improvement in pitch matching skill was possible. Visual feedback was found to be an effective aid in earlier studies, but none of the previous studies provided both a comparison group which had identical practice without the visual cues and a control group which received no form of practice. Such a design was used in the present study.
Thirty students at Portland State University who claimed to have considerable difficulty carrying a tune were given the opportunity to try to match Individual pitches under one of three conditions …
William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe
William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines the work of William Dunbar, a sixteenth century Scottish poet, in order to demonstrate that he is not, as he is often styled, a Scottish Chaucerian. It makes an analysis of the chronological occurrence of forms and themes in his poetry which indicates that his work can be divided into three periods: (1) an initial period in which his work deals with traditional matter and forms; (2) a second period in which he develops a distinctly personal poetic voice; and (3) a final period in which he perfects this personal voice and then relinquishes it for a …

Homosexuality Among Women: Historical And Current Views In Psychology, Craig Bracy

The purpose of this review is to evaluate the methodology of past and present research with female homosexuals and then to summarize the current state of knowledge in psychology and psychiatry. This reviewer has established specific criteria by which all studies throughout this literature review will be examined. These are: sample size, sampling of experimental control groups, variable controlled (age, education, etc), how sexual orientation was determined, and tests and questionnaires employed, their reliability, validity, administration, and interpretation. …

Der Verfremdungseffekt Von Brecht Bis Handke, Brigitte Patrick

This thesis intends to show how the application of the Verfremdungseffekt (alienation effect), originally formulated by Brecht, serves to express different Weltanschauungen in the works of Dürrenmatt, Frisch and Handke. The main emphasis is on the works of Peter Handke however, in order to demonstrate the changes in the interpretation of the alienation effect, some of the plays by Dürrenmatt and Frisch are analysed.

Series Of Drawings And Paintings, William Dyas Garnett
Series Of Drawings And Paintings, William Dyas Garnett
Dissertations and Theses
At the beginning or the program my work was strongly oriented toward the individual objects used in the paintings and lacked any cohesive means or unification. Collage was used as an attempt for unification but more was still needed. It was not until I let go or observed or preconceived images and allowed the image to develop from the free now or washes and lines that I was able to allow the picture to give ideas back to me. The pictures were now growing from themselves and from the ideas suggested to me, without having to force the image prior …

Revolutions: A Comparative Study, Thomas E. Gill
Revolutions: A Comparative Study, Thomas E. Gill
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to describe and then to compare common descriptive characteristics (uniformities) evident within three historical events: the Paris Commune of 1871, the Zapatista Movement of the Mexican Revolution between 1910 and 1919, and the Spartacist Rebellion of 1919. One such uniformity is the fact that all three are abortive social revolutions.
The Circulation Of Elites In Twentieth Century American History: The New Deal As Case Study, Diane Theresa Volk
The Circulation Of Elites In Twentieth Century American History: The New Deal As Case Study, Diane Theresa Volk
Dissertations and Theses
Reviewing the scope and credibility of C. Wright Mills' provocative study, The Power Elite, for a seminar on U. S. in the Sixties prompted my interest in the validity of assessing the historical process by means of the elitist perspective. This coupled with my belief that the New Deal era ushered in a new chapter in the political history of the United States precipitated an investigation of the elitist perspective and how that perspective illuminated the conditions of historical change effected by the New Deal.

The History Of Gun Control In America, Gary W. Hansen
The History Of Gun Control In America, Gary W. Hansen
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examines the significant gun control legislation enacted in the United States, and the movement to enact it. It is a contention of this thesis that sentiment favoring gun control comes essentially from urban areas which are most remote from America’s frontier heritage, and the common usage of firearms. Sentiment opposing gun control, on the other hand, comes primarily from the West and South which are the areas nearest the frontier heritage. The popularity of firearms in the United States is also due, in large measure, to the pioneer background of this nation. This thesis also contends that firearms …
The Pci Resurgent: 1943-1945, Karen Adele Tosi
The Pci Resurgent: 1943-1945, Karen Adele Tosi
Dissertations and Theses
The Italian Communist Party (PCI) emerged from the chaos of the Italian defeat in 1943 as a powerful and cohesive movement. Based upon organizational development throughout the years of Fascist rule in Italy, plus a combination of vigorous partisan activities and a willingness to compromise politically in exchange for governmental participation, the PCI showed promise for achieving economic and social change in Italy. Conservative countermeasures and Allied pressures, however, diminished the Communist advantage until, by 1947, the Party was no longer represented in the postwar government. The success apparent in the economic arena due to the Christian Democrat's program initiated …
Russian Oregon: A History Of The Russian Orthodox Church And Settlement In Oregon, 1882-1976, David B. Cole
Russian Oregon: A History Of The Russian Orthodox Church And Settlement In Oregon, 1882-1976, David B. Cole
Dissertations and Theses
The historical record of the Orthodox Church's missionary efforts in North America and of the development of a viable local church administration is extremely scarce at best. No major scholarly work exists in English covering the historical development of any of the national Orthodox jurisdictions which followed the mass immigration of Arab, Greek, and Slavic Christians to the New World. More unfortunately, few scholarly records exist of local or regional church histories. In a very real sense, until these “grass roots” histories are gathered and recorded, no truly complete history can be written on Orthodox Christianity in North America.

A Profile Of Women Volunteers, Vana O'Brien
A Profile Of Women Volunteers, Vana O'Brien
Dissertations and Theses
Volunteerism has been the subject of much controversy in the last few years inasmuch as it is so often identified as a women's issue. Many areas, previously considered the rightful domain of women, have come under scrutiny as women question the value of their participation in “feminine activities.” As stereotypes are examined, fictions are explored and facts determined so that these former stereotypes can be reviewed in a new light. Many persons are becoming familiar via the popular media with these stereotyped roles (i.e., woman as “Good Mother”) , and learn that, for example, “good mothering” is not a monolithic …
The Role Of American Diplomacy In The Louisiana Purchase, Rebecca Warren
The Role Of American Diplomacy In The Louisiana Purchase, Rebecca Warren
Dissertations and Theses
When a powerful and ambitious nation peacefully transfers almost 600,000,000 acres to a comparatively insignificant nation, the event deserves careful scrutiny and evaluation. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 was such a transaction. Although events and personalities surrounding the Purchase were complex and numerous, the one factor to be examined here is the role of American diplomacy. The problem is to determine the influence American diplomacy had in securing the Louisiana Purchase.
