Engineering-Enhanced Theatre: How Engineering Involvement Can Aid Regional Theatres, Albert M. Le
Engineering-Enhanced Theatre: How Engineering Involvement Can Aid Regional Theatres, Albert M. Le
Architectural Engineering
Engineering and theatre are disciplines not often associated with each other within regional and small theatre companies in the United States. The distinction between the two fields of study is not simply from the fundamental differences between how each field is taught and practiced, but also the difficulties encountered within a scope of theatre often constrained with limited budget and time for each production. However, when beginning to explore the intersection between engineering and theatre, it is found that the empirical nature of current theatrical practices can be countered, and scenic design and construction can be re-envisioned with engineering involvement …

This project attempts to facilitate my personal engagement with the local Spanish-speaking community of San Luis Obispo by broadening the scope of which the local public-serving organizations are able to serve this community, as well as the bilingual English-and-Spanish-speaking inhabitants of the local area. My goal in completing this project is to expand the resources available to the Spanish-speaking inhabitants of SLO, as well as the families here with individuals of varying degrees of Spanish-speaking and English-speaking abilities. In order to do so, this project is comprised of my translations of multiple documents from the County of San Luis Obispo …
Shadows Of Virtue: ‘The Abolition Of Man’ In Modern Context, Luke Thomas Soule
Shadows Of Virtue: ‘The Abolition Of Man’ In Modern Context, Luke Thomas Soule
Communication Studies
C.S. Lewis's The Abolition of Man stands as a remarkable examination of the mid-19th century shift towards moral subjectivism. With a detailed study of this text, this essay will utilize ideological and Postmodern criticism to reveal how Lewis builds his defense of objective morality, or what he calls the "Tao," against the educational spread of relativism. The heart of the analysis is the examination of Lewis's use of ideographs. Terms such as "the Tao," "Men without Chests," and "the Abolition of Man'' not only criticize the philosophical trends of the time but also tap into a deep cultural current of …

Expanding Learn By Doing: Creating A Culture Of Extracurricular Lab Work In The Graphic Communication Department, Miriam Gabai, Isis Dominguez
Graphic Communication
The existing Graphic Communication (GrC) curriculum immerses students in print production through hands-on labs, exposing them to a variety of industrial machinery.
However, outside the context of required labs, students will rarely use the department’s equipment, which is a lost learning opportunity.
This project proposes exploring opportunities for students to use machinery outside the context of required classes, in order to both foster familiarity with industry tools and generate new industry knowledge. The aim is to research and develop a plan for implementing a program that helps to encourage students to further develop skills and pursue research projects using department …
High Frequency: A Graphic Anthology Of Music, Cindy Nguyen
High Frequency: A Graphic Anthology Of Music, Cindy Nguyen
Graphic Communication
High Frequency experiments with the production of both non-traditional book design and graphic design in order to explore the personal relationship that can exist between an individual and music. Key areas of experimentation lie in typography, graphic design, and layout in order to result in a specialized, hand-crafted book featuring custom posters of twenty-five albums that have had particular significance to my personal musical journey. How can one visually represent their emotional connection, journey, and relationship to a body of music? Though this is the primary focus of this project, a secondary goal is to explore how an individual interacts …

Master's Theses
The following thesis describes the life and activities of Jorge Ricardo Masetti, an Argentinian journalist who was assigned to interview Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban Revolution against dictator Fulgencio Batista. Masetti was responsible for broadcasting interviews with Fidel Castro and Ernesto “Che” Guevara to the rest of Latin America for the first time, allowing people to understand what was happening in Cuba through the words of the Revolution’s leaders. Masetti returned to Cuba to found the first international Latin American news agency, Prensa Latina, which still exists today. However, ideological factionalism within Prensa Latina drove Masetti to resign in …
Exploring Podcasting As A Medium For Sharing Modern Issues With College-Age Demographics, Arabel Grey Meyer
Exploring Podcasting As A Medium For Sharing Modern Issues With College-Age Demographics, Arabel Grey Meyer
Journalism
This paper examines the medium of podcasting and creating a personal brand through this medium. While analog forms of broadcast media such as television and radio were some of the most common sources of the public’s information until around the 1960s, technological advances and the creation of the internet drastically changed the way that the public absorbs and accesses its information. Media serves to provide several key roles in our society: entertainment, education, providing a platform to discuss issues, and serving the role of a watchdog for institutions and governments (2016). Podcasting, as a modern media form that has become …

El Nacimiento Del Rock En Español: ¿Cómo Fue Que Este Género De Música Latina Tuvo Éxito?, Alejandro V. Martinez
World Languages and Cultures
This paper titled El nacimiento del rock en español: ¿Cómo fue que este género de música latina tuvo éxito? will cover information regarding the Spanish rock movement. This essay compares what is written in this paper to that of prior scholars to show that although they do bring valid points, there is a lot more than many of us realize. There are various articles and reports written about the movement, but many do not explain the creation of the movement, let alone its survival in the music industry as a new genre that some had never heard of or had …

Todo Sobre América Latina, Kayla Madeline Schwartz
World Languages and Cultures
This project attempts to inform a Spanish-speaking audience about the humanities of Latin America. The format is a blog which solicits more engagement with the embedded research and written text. Colorful photos and informative videos attract the attention of a general public that may otherwise not be interested in learning extensively about history and culture. Such focus is important because Latin American past has great bearing on the lives of much of the Latinx community today—in many regions.
Specifically, this blog contains articles about history, literature, movies and shows, dance, and travelling. The audience can learn about a broad timeline …

A Rhetorical Criticism Of "Fleabag": Tragicomedy And What It Means To Be A Feminist, Morgan Ashley White
Communication Studies
This essay conducts a rhetorical criticism of the television series Fleabag, analyzing how creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge uses tragicomedy to dismantle the notion that there is one right way to be a feminist. After providing background on Waller-Bridge, the history of feminism, and the creation of Fleabag, the essay closely examines several key scenes from the show. It demonstrates how Waller-Bridge employs humor intertwined with serious subject matter to highlight the complexities and contradictions women face in navigating conflicting societal expectations around gender. Through the flawed yet honest portrayal of Fleabag herself and her interactions with other nuanced female …

Graphic Communication
The main purpose of this study is to define the overall effectiveness of visual marketing through animation and storytelling narration. California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo has dozens of potential majors that interest students, thus leading to specific programs such as Graphic Communication (GRC) gaining fewer numbers compared to other College of Liberal Arts (CLA) fields. By analyzing what key elements are necessary for gaining outside attention and intrigue about a college program, I can better understand what information needs to be presented in my video project. This video will focus on defining what Graphic Communication is as a …

Long Story Short and is a vintage up-cycling art brand. Our mission is to breathe new life into vintage pieces, crafting them into modern wearable art. As the name suggests, each creation tells a story while being revitalized for today’s fashion forward community.
Fast fashion and trend cycling has been a growing problem in today’s society. Things are going ‘in’ and ‘out’ quicker than they ever have. Trend cycling usually operates on a 20-year timeline. But, today’s sped up cycle encourages people to constantly over-consume in chase of the next cool thing. It’s unsustainable and an impossible chase. With a …

This project is my personal translation of the informational signs found inside the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum. The inspiration and intention for this project comes directly from my experience as a WLC student; Some of my previous assignments had emphasized engagement with our local Hispanic community in real-world contexts, which eventually became my primary motivation when deciding on the topic of my senior project. My goal is twofold: ensure that all San Luis Obispo residents can learn about the history of their home, not just English speakers; and generate more awareness, appreciation and patronage of this valuable but largely …

Sustainable Packaging For Sundae School, Emiko L. Visscher
Graphic Communication
Sundae School is a relatively new and creative brand producing cannabis products and smoke wear clothing. Sundae School has made an impression within the market due to their strong brand identity that translates through their packaging and design choices. I have decided to create two versions of an alternative package design for their line of Mochi gummy edibles. Their current packaging is purposeful, but I plan to design focused around minimizing packaging waste and utilizing sustainable packaging materials while keeping their brand identity at the forefront.

A Guide For The Everyday Woman Surfer: How Surf Culture's Patriarchy Marginalizes Ocean Lovers, Alexis S. Di Stefano
Women's, Gender and Queer Studies
Humans are naturally drawn to the water by wind and tide. It is a place of solace that we have a desire to know deeply, yet we have kept one another from experiencing it through biases that perpetuate inequality. White-supremacist hegemony has historically kept communities of color from coastlines, women from lineups, and queer communities from participating in surf culture. As more people from all social groups return to the water through surfing in the 20th century, surf culture needs to adapt to become more inclusive. This paper outlines surf culture's historical transition into whiteness and how female beauty standards …

Benefits Of Having A Disability Cultural Center At Cal Poly, Chau Nguyen
Benefits Of Having A Disability Cultural Center At Cal Poly, Chau Nguyen
Political Science
All colleges and universities in the United States are legally required to accommodate their students with disabilities. However, many schools do not support their disabled student body in ways that go beyond what they are legally required to provide under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Though every university and college in the United States has a dedicated ADA compliance office, students with disabilities still express that their holistic needs are unmet and that they feel unsupported by their schools. Establishing Disability Cultural Programs and Centers is one method that colleges and universities …

The Center for Centering seeks to create a large-scale healing center, conducive to individual centering of the mind and body. This mobile installation provides a relaxing, enclosed space while still maintaining a connection to the outdoors. The clients liked the idea of having a pop-up installation that could be easily set up as a touring display. With a deadline for installation looming in June 2022, a team of students had five months to design and manufacture the structure.
In winter 2022, the students developed custom geometry to minimize the number of individual parts and built a ¼ scale model of …
Suppression Of National Identities: Ukrainian And Baltic Cultures In The Soviet Union, Jonathan H. Mastman
Suppression Of National Identities: Ukrainian And Baltic Cultures In The Soviet Union, Jonathan H. Mastman
Master's Theses
This thesis defines the formation and consummation of Soviet Bolshevism as another imperialist force rather than its stated objective of freeing the people of the United Soviet Socialist Republics from the clutches of an inequitable elite. Through the policies and objectives of the Soviet government the workers and citizens of Ukraine and the Baltic republics were not liberated or given autonomy over their lives and labor, as Marxist-Leninism would have them believe. I review the Russification efforts found first in the Tsarist Russian Empire and then continued by Soviets in the nature of pursuing or denying cultural, political, and economic …

This project is a collective piece of tangible material that is a product of my years of learning, listening, and witnessing the overlap between the depth of different Spanish-speaking and Latinx cultures, and the various identities within the LGBTQ+ community. Taking a critical lens on what I have learned as an anglo student at Cal Poly through the words of a language that is not mine, this project speaks to the many layers to which my love, fascination and dedication with the Spanish language and cultures have impacted my life. Essentially, this project is a love letter and encapsulation of …
