High Consumption And Global Justice, Harry Van Der Linden Jun 2001

High Consumption And Global Justice, Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Justice requires that high consumption in affluent societies be slowed down for the sake of eradicating extreme poverty in the developing world and improving the condition of its very moderate consumers. High consumption places environmental and resource burdens and restrictions on the economic growth options of developing countries without bringing commensurate benefits. Moreover, high consumers enjoy products made in less developed countries by workers who have inadequate wages and often labor in unhealthy and unsafe conditions.

Contemporary high consumption is characterized by a continuous raising of the standards of satisfactory spending. This process is visible in many American consumption patterns: …

Learn Now, Subscribe Later!: A Method Of Developing Audiences For Opera Through A Commitment To Outreach In Theory And Practical Examples, Grant Douglas Meachum May 2001

Learn Now, Subscribe Later!: A Method Of Developing Audiences For Opera Through A Commitment To Outreach In Theory And Practical Examples, Grant Douglas Meachum

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Opera fanatics represent a vocal sector of the American arts community. Because of a combination of social, economic, educational, and persona factors, these individuals choose to attend operatic performances, and support the companies who present these performances with their time and money. These individuals, along with their like-minded colleagues in other arts disciplines represent the past, the present, and the continued vitality of the performing arts in the United States.

Contextual Unanimity And The Units Of Selection Problem, Stuart M. Glennan Jan 2001

Contextual Unanimity And The Units Of Selection Problem, Stuart M. Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Sober and Lewontin’s critique of genic selectionism is based upon the principle that a unit of selection should make a context‐independent contribution to fitness. Critics have effectively shown that this principle is flawed. In this paper I show that the context independence principle is an instance of a more general principle for characterizing causes, called the contextual unanimity principle. I argue that this latter principle, while widely accepted, is erroneous. What is needed is to replace the approach to causality characterized by the contextual unanimity criterion with an approach based on the concept of causal mechanism. After sketching such an approach, …

Grounds For Mutual Growth, C. Murray Rogers Jan 2001

Grounds For Mutual Growth, C. Murray Rogers

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I was asked to share the way in which my view of Hindu-Christian dialogue has changed over the years and it is a joy to try to do so. Forgive me if, instead of a formal article, I write in a more personal vein as, maybe, a swansong, a last testimony to what has become more and more central in my life. After all at 83 I am likely very soon to be singing my last song!

The Sage Of Pure Experience: The Appeal Of Ramana Maharsi In The West, Thomas A. Forsthoefel Jan 2001

The Sage Of Pure Experience: The Appeal Of Ramana Maharsi In The West, Thomas A. Forsthoefel

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Wilhelm Halbfass's seminal study of the concept of experience in Indian religions illuminates the philosophical ambiguities of the term and its recent appropriations by some neo-Advaitins to serve apologetic ends. Anantanand Rambachand's own study of the process of liberation in Advaita Vedanta also critically reviews these apologetic strategies, arguing that in privileging anubhava, they undervalue or misrepresent the importance given to sruti in Sankara's Advaita. In this article, I hope to extend the work of these two scholars, this time reviewing the unusually strong appeal of a modern adept of Advaita, Ramana Maharsi, to Western scholars and spiritual figures. …

Luis Goytisolo Beyond "Antagonía": His Search For Agency In Democratic Spain, Terri Carney Jan 2001

Luis Goytisolo Beyond "Antagonía": His Search For Agency In Democratic Spain, Terri Carney

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Since his monumentally successful tetralogy, Antagonía, Luis Goytisolo has adapted his literary style to survive the changes in both the publishing world and the greater cultural context of post-Franco Spain. Indeed, his post-Antagonía novels can be divided into two phases: the structurally complex novels of the 1980s, and the more readable novels of the 1990s. Although these two groups of novels differ stylistically, they both form part of Goytisolo's ongoing critique of Western man's investment in subjectivity as either a controlling, self-governed force or a controlled subject, both of which occlude a viable notion of human agency. My study …

Latent Narratives: Sideshadowing In "Fortunata Y Jacinta", Linda M. Willem Jan 2001

Latent Narratives: Sideshadowing In "Fortunata Y Jacinta", Linda M. Willem

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In his book, Narrative and Freedom, Gary Saul Morson uses the term "sideshadowing" to identify a set of devices-operating in the works of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky-that are used to counter the closed view of time associated with another term, "foreshadowing." According to Morson, this temporal closure is the result of the backward causation of foreshadowing. That is, in foreshadowing something happens because something else is going to happen. Instead of being caused by a prior event, it is caused by a subsequent one. That means that the future is already set, at least to the extent that it can …

Beyond The Liberal Peace Project: Toward Peace With Justice, Harry Van Der Linden Jan 2001

Beyond The Liberal Peace Project: Toward Peace With Justice, Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Many contemporary liberals adhere to the "liberal peace project" (LPP) -- that is, the idea that world peace can be realized through the spread of political liberalism, or capitalist democracy. The LPP is based on projecting toward the future the well-documented fact that secure modern democracies have never fought wars with one another. A spirit of optimism prevails among LPP proponents, bolstered by the recent uprise in democracies, and they argue that their cause can be advanced by a liberal foreign policy that promotes free trade and human rights. I argue that the LPP is flawed by not recognizing that …

The Political Katherine Mansfield, Lee Garver Jan 2001

The Political Katherine Mansfield, Lee Garver

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Ideologies that have been superseded by more enduring political discourses and literary figures who have been succeeded by greater authors are frequently relegated to the footnotes of cultural scholarship. But sometimes these lesser-known subjects of literary history, properly attended to, provide unique opportunities for a richer understanding of aesthetic developments. The study of British modernism, in particular, can benefit from a willingness to examine forgotten political-cultural relationships. Indeed, the period's extreme ideological complexity and cross-fertilization has served to mask the important political roles played by less celebrated artists in the formulation of modernist aesthetic doctrine. This is particularly true of …
