Christians seeking to "save the planet" have to relate "creation" with "salvation" in a way that does justice to both themes. This collection explores the ways in which this task is approached in a wide range of recent theological movements. It includes sections by 54 authors from all over the world. The book provides a barometer of contemporary theological movements.

What is the purpose of animals? Didn't God give humans dominion over other creatures? Didn't Jesus eat lamb? These are the kinds of questions that Christians who advocate compassion toward other animals regularly face. Yet Christians who have a faith-based commitment to care for other animals through what they eat, what they wear, and how they live with other creatures are often unsure how to address these biblically and theologically based challenges. In A Faith Embracing All Creatures, authors from various denominational, national, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds wrestle with the text, theology, and tradition to explain the roots of their …

Faculty Publications
This comprehensive volume celebrates the 150th anniversary of the 1855 edition of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grasswith twenty essays by preeminent scholars representing a variety of critical perspectives that focus exclusively on the original edition. Once regarded as primarily a collector's item, this edition is now viewed as the poet's most bold and compelling articulation of the possibilities of American democracy.
The essays weave a rich tapestry of the most current, innovative criticism on this foundational book of American poetry. The contributors treat Whitman's poetry, his biography, his politics, his reception in the United States and abroad, race and ethnic …

Beyond Homelessness: Christian Faith In A Culture Of Displacement, Steven C. Bouma-Prediger, Brian John Walsh

This book goes far beyond covering the subject of homelessness as the social problem we all recognize in our cities. Mass emigrations, displaced families, and human alienation from the earth all mark our times. In critiquing contemporary North American culture, Steven Bouma-Prediger and Brian Walsh discuss various forms of homelessness - socioeconomic, ecological, and psycho-spiritual - and creatively show how biblical attentiveness and Christian faith can heal the profound dislocations in our society. Ending each of their chapters with a moving biblical meditation, the authors also interact throughout with characters and themes from current literature and popular culture - from …

Must All Be Saved? A Kierkegaardian Response To Theological Universalism, Jack E. Mulder
Must All Be Saved? A Kierkegaardian Response To Theological Universalism, Jack E. Mulder

In this paper, I consider how a Kierkegaardian could respond critically to the question of strong theological universalism, i.e., the belief that all individuals must eventually be reconciled to God and experience everlasting happiness. A Kierkegaardian would likely reject what Thomas Talbott has called "conservative theism," but has the resources to mount a sustained attack on the view that all individuals must experience everlasting happiness. Some have seen that Kierkegaard has some potential in this regard, but a full Kierkegaardian response to strong theological universalism has yet to be given. In this paper, I give such an account.

This three-volume reference (which complements the three-volume American history through literature, 1820-1870) presents lengthy essays on works and themes in literature that contextualize them within their historical milieu. Many essays feature an individual work for the subject, describing the work's critical reception and interpretation while focusing on the events or themes it depicts, such as racism, class, or philosophical or religious belief. Thematic essays, including those on adolescence, city dwellers, humor, or social Darwinism, explore the meaning and impact of the concept during the era, with many specific literary examples. Each essay concludes with cross referencing and lists of bibliography. …
