The Phoenix Rises At The University Of Chicago, Jeff Rasley

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Jeff Rasley’s essay “The Phoenix Rises at the University of Chicago” revels in the glory days of his old college football team, torn between the multiple goalposts of athleticism, social progressiveness and intellectualism.

Investigating The Effectiveness Of Problem-Based Learning In 3d Virtual Worlds. A Preliminary Report On The Hadrian’S Villa Project, Lee Taylor-Helms, Lynne. Kvapil, John Fillwalk, Bernard Frischer Jan 2013

Investigating The Effectiveness Of Problem-Based Learning In 3d Virtual Worlds. A Preliminary Report On The Hadrian’S Villa Project, Lee Taylor-Helms, Lynne. Kvapil, John Fillwalk, Bernard Frischer

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This paper discusses a recent study to test the effectiveness of combining 3D virtual worlds (VWs) with Problem Based Learning (PBL) in archaeological education of undergraduate college students at two American universities. The testbed used was a virtual world of Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli (Italy), a World Heritage Site dating to the reign of Hadrian (117-138 CE). At both universities courses were offered on the villa using a PBL approach in such a way that the relative strengths and weaknesses of learning based on face-to-face, 2D, and VW presentations could be assessed. The study helped to clarify ways in which …

Probable Causes And The Distinction Between Subjective And Objective Chance, Stuart M. Glennan Jan 1997

Probable Causes And The Distinction Between Subjective And Objective Chance, Stuart M. Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In this paper I present both a critical appraisal of Humphreys' probabilistic theory of causality and a sketch of an alternative view of the relationship between the notions of probability and of cause. Though I do not doubt that determinism is false, I claim that the examples used to motivate Humphreys' theory typically refer to subjective rather than objective chance. Additionally, I argue on a number of grounds that Humphreys' suggestion that linear regression models be used as a canonical form for the description of causal relations is untenable. I conclude by exploring the variety of ways in which probabilistic …

Computationalism And The Problem Of Other Minds, Stuart M. Glennan Jan 1995

Computationalism And The Problem Of Other Minds, Stuart M. Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In this paper I discuss Searle's claim that the computational properties of a system could never cause a system to be conscious. In the first section of the paper I argue that Searle is correct that, even if a system both behaves in a way that is characteristic of conscious agents (like ourselves) and has a computational structure similar to those agents, one cannot be certain that that system is conscious. On the other hand, I suggest that Searle's intuition that it is “empirically absurd” that such a system could be conscious is unfounded. In the second section I show …

Potty-Talk In Parisian Plays, Elizabeth Mix Jan 1993

Potty-Talk In Parisian Plays, Elizabeth Mix

Scholarship and Professional Work – Arts

When Henry Somm and Alfred Jarry died in Paris in 1907, they were penniless and forgotten by all but their closest friends. However, the contrast between the life and work of these two artist/playwrights is graphically demonstrated by the conditions under which they passed away. Henry Somm, best known as a lesser-known Impressionist, was sixty-three years old when he died “of natural causes” in his atelier at 27 boulevard de Rochechouart. Alfred Jarry, friend of Picasso and a member of the avant-garde, died at thirty-four in indescribable filth within a closet-sized space between two floors in an apartment house. Since …

The Humanity Of God In Liberal Orthodox Theology, Paul Valliere Jan 1993

The Humanity Of God In Liberal Orthodox Theology, Paul Valliere

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The purpose of this paper is to present some of the testimonies of liberal Orthodox theology in late Imperial Russia concerning the theology of Incarnation. Since it may come as a surprise to many people, even to many Orthodox, that a tradition of liberal theology existed in Russian Orthodoxy, the evidence I adduce may be of interest apart from the specific theological discussion to which it pertains.

Narrative Voice, Point Of View, And Characterization In Graciliano Ramos's Vidas Sêcas, Linda M. Willem Jan 1987

Narrative Voice, Point Of View, And Characterization In Graciliano Ramos's Vidas Sêcas, Linda M. Willem

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Virtually all criticism concerning Vidas Sêcas includes a discussion of its multiple point of view format and its use of free indirect style. It is generally agreed that the shifting points of view provide a multifaceted view of reality, and that the free indirect style technique is a verisimilar method of presenting the thoughts of the inarticulate protagonists, as well as being a means of combining third person objectivity with first person subjectivity. These observations, however, show a tendency to treat narrative voice and point of view as a single phenomenon, thereby blurring the distinction between the two. Yet the …

Folkloric Structure And Narrative Voice In Bècquer's Leyendas, Linda M. Willem Jan 1984

Folkloric Structure And Narrative Voice In Bècquer's Leyendas, Linda M. Willem

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The bulk of the critical study of Gustavo Bècquer's leyendas has dealt with the thematics, stylistics, or the folkloric motifs and origins of the individual works. Surprisingly little attention has been given to the structure or the narrative techniques used in the leyendas as a whole. The purpose of this study is to examine these structural and narrative aspects from a folkloric perspective in order to better appreciate Bècquer's blending of popular and literary art forms.
