Protecting Communities In Research: Current Guidelines And Limits Of Extrapolation, Charles Weijer, Gary Goldsand, Ezekiel Emanuel Oct 1999

Protecting Communities In Research: Current Guidelines And Limits Of Extrapolation, Charles Weijer, Gary Goldsand, Ezekiel Emanuel

Charles Weijer

As genetic research increasingly focuses on communities, there have been calls for extending research protections to them. We critically examine guidelines developed to protect aboriginal communities and consider their applicability to other communities. These guidelines are based on a model of researcher-community partnership and span the phases of a research project, from protocol development to publication. The complete list of 23 protections may apply to those few non-aboriginal communities, such as the Amish, that are highly cohesive. Although some protections may be applicable to less-cohesive communities, such as Ashkenazi Jews, analysis suggests substantial problems in extending these guidelines in toto …

Protecting Communities In Research: Philosophical And Pragmatic Challenges, Charles Weijer

Charles Weijer

The issue of the protection of communities in clinical research first arose 10 years ago in studies conducted in technologically developing countries by scientists from technologically developed nations. The question was, which ethical standards ought to apply, those of the Western investigators or local standards?

Blades Of Grass: The Stories Of Lao She, She Lao, William Lyell, Sarah Chen

Sarah W. Chen

"If you want to write good short stories," Lao She once observed, "you have to give it everything you’ve got. The world will allow the existence of a very imperfect novel, but it won’t be that polite with a short story. Art, after all, is not like a pig—the fatter the better." Lao She’s stories proved to be very good indeed, moving and delighting readers for many years and establishing him as a master of classic modern fiction. Thankfully we now have access to a rich collection of his short stories in superb English translations. These stories showcase the varied …

Review: The Rhetoric Of Power In The Bayeux Tapestry, By Suzanne Lewis, Daniel Terkla Jul 1999

Review: The Rhetoric Of Power In The Bayeux Tapestry, By Suzanne Lewis, Daniel Terkla

Daniel Terkla

In the preface to her study of the much-discussed Bayeux Tapestry, Suzanne Lewis, professor of art history at Stanford University, wonders, "[W]hy another book on the Bayeux Tapestry?" (xiii). She confidently responds that she has "something new to say" (xiii) and quickly invokes the major recent studies of this important artwork. Although she does not situate her work in that context beyond invoking names, Professor Lewis states that she has "no quarrel with . . . Michael Parisse (1983), David Wilson (1985), David Bernstein (1986), J. Bard McNulty (1989), or Wolfgang Grape (1993)" (xiii). Acknowledging that The Rhetoric of Power …

Sarah Lawrence College 70th Commencement, Joanne Braxton

Joanne Braxton

Two hundred fifteen students received bachelor of arts degrees and 115 graduate students received the master's degree at the College's 70th commencement, May 21. Speaking as an alumna and a member of the board of trustees, Joanne M. Braxton,'72, Braxton drew upon her own experiences, those of graduating students and fellow alumnae/i to make the point that the kind of education Sarah Lawrence offers prepares students for life in a diverse society. She spoke of diversity in terms broader than race, gender, ethnic or religious backgrounds, but rather as the embodiment of individual differences. And she spoke about the responsibility …

Freedpeople In The Tobacco South: Virginia, 1860-1900, Jeffrey Kerr-Ritchie Mar 1999

Freedpeople In The Tobacco South: Virginia, 1860-1900, Jeffrey Kerr-Ritchie

Jeffrey Kerr-Ritchie

Throughout the colonial and antebellum periods, Virginia's tobacco producers exploited slave labor to ensure the profitability of their agricultural enterprises. In the wake of the Civil War, however, the abolition of slavery, combined with changed market conditions, sparked a breakdown of traditional tobacco culture. Focusing on the transformation of social relations between former slaves and former masters, Jeffrey Kerr-Ritchie traces the trajectory of this breakdown from the advent of emancipation to the stirrings of African American migration at the turn of the twentieth century.

Drawing upon a rich array of sources, Kerr-Ritchie situates the struggles of newly freed people within …

Placebo-Controlled Trials In Schizophrenia: Are They Ethical? Are They Necessary?, Charles Weijer Feb 1999

Placebo-Controlled Trials In Schizophrenia: Are They Ethical? Are They Necessary?, Charles Weijer

Charles Weijer

The current controversy as to the proper role of the placebo control in the evaluation of new treatments for schizophrenia requires an analysis that is sensitive to both ethical and scientific issues. Clinical equipoise, widely regarded as the moral foundation of the randomized controlled trial (RCT), requires the use of best available treatment as the control in RCT. Scientific criticisms of the use of an active control are examined and none present an insuperable barrier to the use of an active control. Indeed, scrutiny of the most recent argument for the use of placebo controls, 'assay sensitivity', suggests that the …
