Honoring a life well lived...It is with great sadness that we share the news of Barbara Agonia's recent death. Barbara was a friend to WRIN for decades. It is often said that our accomplishments are not truly our own, as we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. Barbara's impact on WRIN will resonate for years to come. Diminutive in stature yet magnanimous in spirit, Barbara served as Chair of WRIN's Inaugural Community Advisory Board (CAB) created in 2000. We were a very young institute then without much of a track record or community support. Barbara …

'Wait, Twilight Is A Thing Again?': Examining The Ways In Which Different Social Groups Navigate The Complex Cultural Issues In Twilight, Veronica Buchanan

Undergraduate Research Symposium Podium Presentations

The four books and five movies in the extremely popular Twilight series give readers and viewers a lot to unpack, in both good ways and bad, and have led to fierce debates over the place the series should have in our culture, especially in regard to gender politics. However, most of the discussions of these texts and their cultural impact have tended to lack a robust, intersectional feminist perspective, one that attends to issues not only of gender, but also race, class, and sexuality. This research draws on both fan studies and feminist media studies to examine the various ways …

Where Are The Women? Legal Traditions And Descriptive Representation On The European Court Of Justice, Rebecca D. Gill, Christian B. Jensen

Research Briefs

Why are there so few women on the European Union’s highest court, the European Court of Justice (ECJ)? Answering this question is fundamental to understanding how justices to the ECJ are appointed, how they represent Europeans in general and women in particular. In our article, recently published in the journal Politics, Groups and Identities, we find that pre-nomination career experience is associate with gender imbalances in the ECJ. In particular, we find that ECJ judges from member states where there is a tradition of judicial engagement with policy making judicial nominees with past experiences working in government ministries are less …
