Guides to Manuscript Collections

This collection consists of one scrapbook entitled containing photographs, ephemera, and memorabilia collected by Elizabeth Francis (later Agee) during and after her time at Marshall. Materials in the scrapbook include an autograph and note section, dance cards, sorority correspondence and invitations, student government materials, a student directory, event programs, photographs of Francis at Marshall and, later, family photographs, a gradebook for an 8th grade course taught by Francis, and other mixed materials such as handkerchiefs and calling cards. Also included in the scrapbook are slips of paper identifying subjects or items written by Susan Riggs, Agee’s daughter.

Manuscript of "Halftime," a book by Ms. Carelli-Gilbert, widow of Al Carelli, describing their marriage and how the family coped with his death. Carelli, a coach, was travelling with the Marshall University football team that died in the 1970 airplane crash.

The Jane Shepherd Papers consist of letters, contracts, printed programs, newspaper clippings, school papers and photographs, all related to her career as a mezzo-soprano and voice teacher. Printed programs of her performances between 1935 and 1979 comprise the bulk of the collection.

Other items relating to her professional singing career include a scrapbook and newspaper clippings of reviews, publicity material and photographs. Notes from classes, certificates and a transcript reflect her years as a student, from 1935 until 1946, at William Woods College, Fulton, Missouri; the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music; and the Juilliard School of Music. This collection consists primarily of newspaper clippings about Robert Lloyd Beck and his wife Ruth Myers Beck while they were living in Huntington, West Virginia. Newspaper clippings about Robert relate to his work as a philosophy professor while newspaper clippings about Ruth primarily relate to her work in the Faculty Wives Club. Also present in the collection is a 1939 commencement program, a program for a 1965 Marshall University Theatre production of A Streetcar Named Desire, and a November 10, 1950 letter to Robert Beck from fellow professor James B.
