Muir Center Newsletters, 1981-2015

Volume 7, Number 1 NEW °3> f\ND VARWIN God and Evolution in Nature by Shayne Zurilgen (Editor's note: The author, a senior in geology at the University of the Pacific, prepared this paper in the fall of 1996for an undergraduate history class, "JohnMuir and the Environment.") Ifred Lord Tennyson was looking into his microscope one day when he was moved to comment, "Strange that these wonders should draw some men to God and repel others."1 Tennyson was addressing the fervor surrounding Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. While he didn't really identify anyone in particular, Tennyson conceivably could …

Hardly The Best Of Times The Practice Of Medicine On The Maine Frontier, 1812-1841, John D. Blaisdell Dec 1996

Hardly The Best Of Times The Practice Of Medicine On The Maine Frontier, 1812-1841, John D. Blaisdell

Maine History

Account books left by two physicians provide a glimpse of the practice of medicine on the eastern Maine frontier. They reveal some interesting patterns: Both doctors practiced some dentistry, delivered babies, and engaged in sidelines outside their medical practice. Both vaccinated patients in the face of impending epidemics, and both treated internal afflictions using standard nineteenth-century medical therapeutics. Sometimes doctors did more harm than good, but even in this short span of time we can see progress on the medical frontier.

"Permit Me Then Good Friends To Sing": Reflections, Reactions, And Manipulations In Civil War Songs, Joanne Thomas Dec 1996

"Permit Me Then Good Friends To Sing": Reflections, Reactions, And Manipulations In Civil War Songs, Joanne Thomas

Masters Theses

Musicologists, folklorists and historians agree that the music of the Civil War was a significant means of communication for Americans in all regions and classes. The popularity of music soared during the war, with songs about the war holding center stage. This study moves beyond the acknowledgment that these songs were an important means of communication to seeing what messages were being communicated by both professional and amateur songwriters. These lyricists criticized and praised behaviors, often pointing out the social acceptance or exclusion that could result from individual behaviors, made assumptions about and passed moral judgements on female, male, and …

The U.S. Government's Investigation Of E.B. Stahlman As An Enemy Alien: A Case Study Of Nativism In Nashville, Robert O'Brien Dec 1996

The U.S. Government's Investigation Of E.B. Stahlman As An Enemy Alien: A Case Study Of Nativism In Nashville, Robert O'Brien

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As a railroad executive for the Louisville and Nashville and then publisher for the Nashville Banner, Edward Bushrod Stahlman, a German immigrant, made many enemies. Stahlman's constant feuding with Luke Lea, who owned the rival Nashville Tennessean, led to an investigation of his citizenship during World War I. Hatred of Germans was at a fever pitch and not only did the Department of Justice examine Stahlman, who actually had been naturalized as a child, but the Tennessean also accused him of being a German propagandist. This thesis serves as an example of the scrutiny German-Americans underwent during the war. Organizations …

The Greens Of Falls Of Rough: A Kentucky Family Biography 1795-1965, Hugh Ridenour Dec 1996

The Greens Of Falls Of Rough: A Kentucky Family Biography 1795-1965, Hugh Ridenour

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of writing about the Greens of Falls of Rough is to record the extraordinary lives of three generations of a prominent, but somewhat neglected, Kentucky family that contributed greatly to the history of the Commonwealth. This family’s activities parallel that history in social, economic and political aspects from the state’s inception to the 1960s.

In addition, this thesis should alleviate a pervasive misunderstanding regarding the identity of Willis Green, founder of the Greens of Falls of Rough. Mr. Green, a prominent Kentuckian in his own right, has been confused with another Kentuckian, a Willis Green of Danville. The …

Duncan Hines The Man Behind The Cake Mix, Louis Hatchett Dec 1996

Duncan Hines The Man Behind The Cake Mix, Louis Hatchett

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To many Americans Duncan Hines (1880-1959) is just a name on a cake mix package. Few would suspect that in the 1940s and 1950s Duncan Hines was the most trusted name in the food industry. In the early twentieth century Hines was a traveling salesman of printing wares who was keenly interested in discovering safe places to eat during the course of his business excursions. He eventually became well-known among the public for his specialized knowledge of the locations of superior dining facilities. In 1936 he began publishing this information annually in a restaurant guide. By the end of the …

Facets Of Courage: Colonel Charles Victor Deland And The American Civil War, Anthony P. Glesner Dec 1996

Facets Of Courage: Colonel Charles Victor Deland And The American Civil War, Anthony P. Glesner

Masters Theses

This work constitutes a case study of a historical paradigm, that during the course of the Civil War civilians came to view the concepts of valor and virtue very much differently than soldiers, and that this caused tension within communities, both during the war, and after, when civilians continued to judge returning soldiers by an outdated sense of values, while the soldiers themselves, disillusioned by war, only wanted to forget. As time dimmed the memories of war, many veterans began to once again see it in terms of valor and virtue, and thus they reshaped their visions of war and …
