The Response Of The Black Community In Mississippi To The Dixiecrat Movement In 1948, Walter Mcclusky Hurns

Morehead State Theses and Dissertations

The thesis of the research is that the States' Right Movement of 1948 in Mississippi helped to create a new political awareness among blacks for the first time since Radical Reconstruction. As a result of the Dixiecrat revolt against Truman and civil rights, blacks in the state became more assertive about their rights and in 1948 organized themselves gradually to demand their civil rights. In response to the Dixiecrat Movement can be found the origins of the civil rights movement of the fifties and sixties.

Public School Desegregation In Virginia From 1954 To The Present, Adolph H. Grundman Jan 1972

Public School Desegregation In Virginia From 1954 To The Present, Adolph H. Grundman

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation is an examination of the struggle to desegregate the public schools of Virginia from 1954 to 1972. The Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education attacked the social foundation of eleven southern states when it declared that racially segregated schools were "inherently unequal." Brown I,, in fact, was one of many controversial decisions made by the Supreme Court as it reflected the egalitarian spirit of the 1950's and 1960's. By 1970, however, a growing list of legal scholars questioned the wisdom and effectivemess of the Warren Court's judicial activism. My major objective was to trace the tortuous …

The Participation Of The Richmond Negro In Politics, 1890-1900, Joe B. Wilkins

Master's Theses

This short treatise on one aspect of Negro history is the result of the author's pro'ound interest in United States history. The author's personal interest in the history of the Negro in the New South contributed to the selection of this topic.

The Richmond Negro by the end of the decade,1890-1900, was Virtually powerless politically and was ostracized from white society. All Negro Councilmen and Aldermen had been defeated in the May 1896 municipal elections and had been unsuccessful in regaining their seats. A Gold Dream In The Blue Mountains : A Study Of The Chinese Immigrants In The John Day Area, Oregon, 1870-1910, Chia-Lin Chen Jan 1972

A Gold Dream In The Blue Mountains : A Study Of The Chinese Immigrants In The John Day Area, Oregon, 1870-1910, Chia-Lin Chen

Dissertations and Theses

More than one hundred years have passed since the Chinese laborers first landed in this country in the mid-nineteenth century. Yet their history remains cloudy. This phenomenon is quite understandable if one considers the facts that most of the laborers were illiterate, did not have the ability, and never intended, to speak for themselves. It is true that many scholarly works have been published, but few were written by Chinese historians. As a matter of fact, Chinese scholars are unaware that a small number of their countrymen played a strange, pitiful role in American history. The published works reflect the …

American Career Of James Connolly, Kara P. Brewer Jan 1972

American Career Of James Connolly, Kara P. Brewer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

So badly wounded that he had to be propped up in a chair to face the firing squad, James Connolly was executed by the British on May 10, 1916 in Dublin's infamous Kilmainham Jail. He had been one of the leaders of the abortive Easter 'Rising against English control of Ireland. This event in itself was sufficient to guarantee him a significant place in Irish history but Connolly had achieved prominence in other activities as well. Besides being a revolutionary nationalist he had been a Marxist and a labor leader, had founded the Irish Socialist Republican Party and had played …

Four Years For A Fair: Issues, Actions And Activities Coincident And Connected To The Organization & Development Of The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition 1905-1909, Eric Paul Anderson Jan 1972

Four Years For A Fair: Issues, Actions And Activities Coincident And Connected To The Organization & Development Of The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition 1905-1909, Eric Paul Anderson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Since the original American exposition, held in Philadelphia in 1876 commemorating the union's first centennial, a series of great fairs had been staged in the major cities of the country. Chicago and St. Louis were the leaders in size and success. Portland's Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1904 was financially successful if only regional in appeal and served as an inspiration and standard of comparison for the effort Seattle would make. The immediate predecessor to the Seattle fair--held at Jamestown, Virginia in 1907 as a tri-centennial celebration of that city's founding--was to have a great impact in the organization of …

A Study Of Mormon Knowledge Of The American Far West Prior To The Exodus (1830-February, 1846), Lewis Clark Christian Jan 1972

A Study Of Mormon Knowledge Of The American Far West Prior To The Exodus (1830-February, 1846), Lewis Clark Christian

Theses and Dissertations

The American West prior to 1800 was relatively an obscure and unexplored region. However, by 1846, it had been traversed by no less than three government expeditions, and numerous mountain men and adventurers. There was an abundance of guides, maps, and books in print by 1846 for the homeseeker traveling west of the Mississippi River.

The Mormon knowledge and interest in the West began as early as 1832. Throughout the 1830's and early 1840's, as the saints moved West in the face of persecution, the Rocky Mountains were often spoken of as the future Zion of the Church. In 1842, …

Minority Without A Champion: The Kanaka Contribution To The Western United States, 1750-1900, Janice K. Duncan

Dissertations and Theses

Kanakas, Owhyees, Blue Men, were all names given to laborers from Hawaii, or the Sandwich Islands, who contributed significantly to the economic, cultural, and political history of the United States territory west of the Mississippi River in the period 1750-1900.

The Sandwich Islands first entered the international economic scene in the latter eighteenth century when its excellent ports and favorable climate made the Islands an ideal winter harbor and stopover for merchant ships, whalers, and explorers' vessels who needed to replenish food and water supplies, or make necessary repairs. Just as frequently the crews of these vessels needed to be …

The Policy Of Containment And The Middle East, 1946-1958, Ahed George Samaan Jan 1972

The Policy Of Containment And The Middle East, 1946-1958, Ahed George Samaan

Dissertations and Theses

The main objective of American foreign policy in the Middle East, during the post-War period of 1946-1958, was to safeguard the area against Soviet intrusions. This thesis attempts to examine the causes for the failure of the United States to achieve this objective. It concludes that this failure is the result of an alienation of the major national forces in the Middle East. The United States alienated the Arab world by openly and unreservedly supporting Zionist aims in Palestine. She alienated newly independent states by establishing close cooperation with Britain and France, their former colonial masters. She alienated revolutionary nationalists …
