From The White House To The Lake House: Tracing Eliza Winston's Enslavement And Her Pursuit Of Freedom In Minnesota, Christopher P. Lehman
Ethnic and Women's Studies Faculty Publications
Eliza Winston was an African American woman who spent her first forty-three years of life as an enslaved person. Born around 1817, she suffered captivity by multiple enslavers in the slave states Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Louisiana and in the free state Minnesota. The couple John McLemore and Betsy Donelson-McLemore kept her in bondage in Tennessee from 1822 to 1834. President Andrew Jackson's wife was a Donelson, and he intervened--while in office at the White House--to keep Winston enslaved by the Donelsons for another fourteen years. After the McLemores held her in urban Nashville, Mary Eastin-Polk brought her to a …

Saving Walnut Grove: Connecting The Community To Their Past, Evelyn Shrader
Saving Walnut Grove: Connecting The Community To Their Past, Evelyn Shrader
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

The Moore family was active in the Revolutionary War, and the notorious Bloody Bill Cunningham brought the War directly to Moore's front door. Across the Sea, proof of the scrimmage at Walnut Grove Plantation found a home at Windsor Castle for the King. As a running plantation, enslaved peoples also lived on the property and their accounts of life on Walnut …

"Prophecies Of Loss": Debating Slave Flight During Virginia's Secession Crisis, Evan Turiano
Publications and Research
This article examines debates over fugitives from slavery during Virginia’s secession movement. By considering these debates in the context of Virginia’s history of freedom seekers, the constitutional politics of fugitive slave rendition, and white fears of politically informed slave resistance, this article clarifies how proslavery Virginians understood the threat posed by interstate slave flight in 1861. In the wake of Abraham Lincoln's election, proslavery Virginians on both sides of the secession conflict agreed that runaways posed a grave danger to the future of slavery in the state. Early in the convention, southeastern planters and northwestern unionists forged an alliance based …
