An Excerpt from Early Skiing on Snoqualmie Pass Written for the Husky Winter Sports Club. Skiing at the University of Washington goes back to January 1934, when the University of Washington Ski Club formed with a membership of 100 men and women. The club developed a race course at Paradise on Mt. Rainier, rented a cabin at Paradise for the season, and formed a ski team that trained at Paradise and Snoqualmie Summit. The University Book Store ran a bus to Paradise on weekends in 1934, and in 1936, rented ski equipment and offered a bus service from Seattle to …

Skiing At Martin The Northern Pacific Stop At Stampede Pass, John W. Lundin

Works by Local Authors

Martin is a stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad at the east portal of its tunnel under Stampede Pass, going through the Cascade Mountains, named for the nearby Martin Creek. Since the 1920s, Northwest skiers took the Northern Pacific Railroad to Martin to take advantage of the deep snow that fell there. The story of skiing at Martin is virtually unknown these days, and Martin is one of the Lost Ski Areas of Washington.

An account of a “young gentleman” from London, England describing his travels in the colonies of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. These annotated excerpts focus on his time in South Carolina, particularly in the region of the Waccamaw River, and give us an early description of the area that is now Horry (oh-ree) County, South Carolina from the viewpoint of an Englishman in 1734.

The collection includes maps, photographs, documents, and correspondence related to the service of LTC Richard F. Pendleton ’63 and the Vietnam War. These include detailed maps and items highlighting aspects of Pendleton’s time in Vietnam and broader pieces regarding different aspects of the Vietnam War era. Much of this correspondence is in the form of e-mails written many years after the war, and thus includes the personal opinions and biases of their authors. In 1740, Rev. George Whitefield (1714-1770), probably the most famous religious figure of the eighteenth century, passed through what is now Horry County, S.C. Whitefield was an English Anglican cleric and evangelist who was one of the founders of Methodism and the evangelical movement. The spiritual revival he ignited, the Great Awakening, became one of the most formative events in American history. This article contains two entries from his diary, written as he travelled along the coastline in the vicinity of present-day Myrtle Beach. Color Our Campus: A Holy Cross Coloring Book, Holy Cross Libraries

Holy Cross Bookshelf

To commemmorate the 175th anniversary of the College of the Holy Cross, the Holy Cross Libraries Outreach Team designed and created a coloring book using photographs from the College Archives and other sources. The images were edited using Adobe Photoshop® to create line drawings more suitable for coloring.

This project was co-sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations. The Outreach Team of the Holy Cross Libraries and the Office of Alumni Relations are pleased to offer this coloring book, and hope it will bring hours of relaxing enjoyment as well as a nostalgic stroll down Linden Lane.
