Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Education is fast approaching the stage where students are crossing a line between a desire to succeed and the fear of failure. Although UMO tends to shrug off the pressure of grades, many students them of great concern. They gulp their meals and rush to the dorms to study, they toss in bed, losing sleep before tests--if they go to bed at all--and many sweat out every test and grading period as if waiting for the Judgetment. The fear of failure is well hidden in most cases, but there it is.

Henrietta Thompson Papers
A letter from Jack Belden to Henrietta Thompson. About the Walkout, Belden writes to Thompson: “The only way such a small affair could have significance is a from a human standpoint where it could be fictionalized into a symbol.” On the whole, Belden seems to wish to convey that he regards Thompson's project with ambivalence. As he does in all of the letters in this collection, Belden refers to his poverty, here he also mentions being badly treated by his publishers.

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
The more I read headlines such as "University Termed Insensitive to Franco-Americans" the more disgusted I get. Such gross and all-encompassing statements lead me to feel pity--pity for those who write articles, make unfounded charges, and generalize and discredit our University. To the aforementioned I ask, "What do you want?"

It's The Issue That Counts — It's The Language That Counts, Phil Mace
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Editorial reaction to language included in the feature story, "Gay Lib. Spokeswoman" which appears in the 1973-04-12 issue of The Maine Campus. There are over 400,000 words in the English language. It is ridiculous to segregate seven, eight, or nine—or even one—of them as totally unsuitable for use in a newspaper. Acting as if certain four-letter words do not exist only adds to the titillating air that surrounds them when they do appear—as they will.

On January 17, 1972 an ad hoc committee was appointed to evaluate the special educational needs of women within the University of Maine at Orono/Bangor and in the larger community served by this University. This committee was chaired by Dr. Constance Carlson.

SOLUTION: The University environment must become a vital catalyst encouraging each woman student to make the most of the educational opportunity and cultural freedom available at Orono/Bangor thereby …

With the changing picture of dormitory life, the image of housemothers has also changes. Stewart felt women would improve the atmosphere in the dorms.

New Bangor Gay Group Helps Members Find Themselves, Bill Gordon
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Gay liberation has finally come out of the closet in Maine, and it looks like it is out and open to stay. A gay group began last semester at UMO as part of the Abenaki curriculum. Intended as an academic discussion of the social and psychological aspects of homosexuality, the small grou expanded and turned from a discussion to become an active gay social-support group.
