2012-2013 Exceptions Rule: No Compromise

Described as one of Britain’s most musical choreographers, Alston has used works by a diverse range of composers to explore how choreography can animate the spirit of music. Featured in this program will be the American premiere of Alston’s most recent work, A Ceremony of Carols, choreographed to Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece for voice and harp. The music will be performed live by an all-female choir conducted by Montclair State’s Heather J. Buchanan, accompanied by harpist André Tarantiles. Also included will be Alston’s Roughcut and Unfinished Business, set to the music of Steve Reich and Mozart, respectively.

But Thomson is perhaps as famous for the controversy of his death as he is for the strength of his paintings. He died in mysterious circumstances in the waters of Canoe Lake, and in the 75 years since his death there has been endless speculation about …

The Show
Co-written by Don McKellar and Bob Martin, The Drowsy Chaperone debuted in Toronto in 1998 and opened on Broadway in 2006. The two friends had no idea that the joking spoof of 1920s musical comedy that they devised at Martin's 1997 bachelor party would morph into a hit musical of the decade. The show centers on The Man in Chair, a meek, mousy Broadway fanatic, who decides to listen to the soundtrack of his favorite fictional 1920s musical hit, The Drowsy Chaperone. As the music plays, the show comes alive in his apartment and he …

Headstrong Melchior and naive Wendla stumble into each others’ arms, passionate and curious, while anxious Moritz struggles to live up to the stringent expectations of society.
