When this play was given to me as one of my production assignments, I was both thrilled and terrified. I thoroughly enjoy Shakespeare, but I realized that this would also be the largest show of the year; it would be the only production to take place in the Morgan Theater, our largest and most challenging space. This was only my second time designing a realized production and I knew it would be a massive undertaking. However, I knew that having a realized Shakespeare design this early in my career would greatly help my portfolio. Also, my advisor told me that …

Ah, Wilderness! is Eugene O’Neill’s only comedy. The story takes place over the 4th of July weekend and revolves around Richard Miller, a misunderstood teen who rebels against 1906 society with suggestive poetry and declarations of communism. When his girlfriend, Muriel, spurns him at the behest of her father, his antics take a darker turn and lead him to a night of drinking, prostitutes and fist fights. However, all ends well as the two lovers reunite and Richard is surrounded by the love and compassion of his family. Ah, Wilderness! was produced at the Old Lyric theatre in the winter …

The Three Musketeers was directed by Professor Colin Johnson and produced on the Morgan Stage at Utah State University in April of 2011. The earliest meetings for The Three Musketeers occurred in January 2011. The first big concern was the cinematic nature of the script by Ken Ludwig. This script required twenty different physical locations with very little space textually to transition between these locations. The best way to contend with this challenge was to create a world representative of the culture and feel of France during the 1620s. The iconographies created by the images are very distinct, but are …

It isn't often that a man as beloved as Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, comes along. Dr. Seuss wrote more than 60 books in his lifetime, many of which have become classics in the world of children’s literature. His poetic tongue twisters and inventive illustrations have become iconic to several generations of children all over the world. Dr. Seuss' books are not only fun and full of imagination, but more often than not they teach powerful lessons of self-confidence, kindness, and even political awareness.
In April 2010, I was asked to design the set for Seussical the …

I didn’t always want to be a theatrical designer. As a child, I wanted to be a ballerina, an artist, a teacher. My answer to, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” changed ever time someone asked me the question. Though I didn’t understand it a the time, what I wanted was to affect people. I wanted my work to create emotion and thought.
I found that reaction in the theater. Here was a small circle of people who were entirely codependent upon each other to create one large piece of art, all in the hopes of …

I started my collegiate career as an art major in 2-D design with the intent that I would be an art director for an advertising agency. I took a costume construction class two years into my major and I promptly left 2-D design for costume design. Costume design is a wonderful combination of my love of art, history, sewing, drawing, design and creating. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to design four different shows during my time at Utah State University. During my time as a costume designer at Utah State University I designed costumes for four …

In his play Picnic, William Inge has created a study in male and female roles--or rather, the roles and types which society forces on them, and which they more frequently force on themselves. The people in this play are not conscious of their roles as roles. There is no free spirit portrayed in the attempt to throw off his or her classification. Even Madge, with her dreams of escape from the confines of small-town life, is acting in accordance with the behavior patterns of her particular genus. This play does not attack the male and female character typing which …
