MARIANNE HOPPE (1911-2002) had one of the longest theatre careers in the 20th century, but it was more than long; it flourished through the rise and fall of National Socialism, the postwar upheaval that followed it, the development of dueling German theatre cultures during the Cold War, and finally the reunification of Germany in 1991. She knew all the major personalities in the Third Reich, from Hitler on down. Her husband Gustaf Gründgens (1899-1963) was Hermann Goering’s “favorite director,” and she appeared in several of Berlin’s most significant productions.
