The Dionysian Disintegrations Of Horacio Castellanos Moya's Tragic Antiheroes, Spencer Moyes Sep 2021

The Dionysian Disintegrations Of Horacio Castellanos Moya's Tragic Antiheroes, Spencer Moyes

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation presents analyses of six of Horacio Castellanos Moya’s antiheroes. The impetus for this study came from Alberto Moreiras’s article “The Question of Cynicism” (2014), which challenges Beatriz Cortez’s estética del cinismo—a theory that has dominated the academic discourse surrounding Castellanos Moya for the last two decades. Moreiras concludes his article by linking the political perspective of Castellanos Moya’s writings to tragedy rather than cynicism. The present study investigates whether Moreiras’s idea applies to Castellanos Moya’s works characterologically: are Castellanos Moya’s antiheroes tragic? This problem is resolved through psychological-affective character analyses.

Chapter One establishes that many of Castellanos …

Reaching Out: The Basque Transnational Body In The Poetry Of Kirmen Uribe, Enrique Álvarez, Ester Hernández-Esteban

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

In this paper we explore the contribution of Kirmen Uribe, a Basque writer, artist and cultural activist, to the process of political reconciliation in the Basque country, a socially transforming compromise brought about by the dissolution of the Basque terrorist organization ETA in October 20th, 2011. Uribe achieved literary recognition and public notoriety within the Iberian cultural landscape with the publication of his novel Bilbao-New York-Bilbao in 2008, for which he received the Spanish National Literature Prize for Narrative in the following year. However, we argue that it is with his earlier collection of poems Bistatean Heldu Eskutik …

Affect And Feminist Storytelling In Three Spanish American Novels: Leonora By Elena Poniatowska, De Un Salto Descabalga La Reina By Carmen Boullosa, And El Infinito En La Palma De La Mano By Gioconda Belli, Ayelet Ishai

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation analyzes the portrayals of the female protagonists of three Spanish American biographical novels in an exploration of identity formation within feminist literary expressions. Amidst the resurgence of auto/biographical genres, there has been an effort to revive the stories of the historically maligned, and biographical novels about women have become increasingly prevalent. The movement to recover and revise the stories of women, including those who have traditionally been interpreted within misogynist societies, reaches beyond the written text to influence not only the way a character is seen and understood, but the ways that readers see and understand themselves. As …

Through comprehensive close reading, it examines three novels (Clavícula by Marta Sanz, Ordesaby Manuel Vilas and El amor del revés by Luisgé Martín) and three films (Mapa by Elías León Siminiani, True Love by Ion de Sosa, both representative of the Other Spanish Cinema, and Dolor y gloria by Pedro Almodóvar) in order to identify the “inclinations of the …

El Hambre Y La Formación Del Sujeto: Un Estudio Transatlántico De Lazarillo De Tormes Y Naufragios, Nicole Donoghue

Theses and Dissertations

Affect, Neoliberalism And Forgiveness In Alonso Cueto's 'Redención' Trilogy, Anthony Joseph Pearce Jun 2018

Affect, Neoliberalism And Forgiveness In Alonso Cueto's 'Redención' Trilogy, Anthony Joseph Pearce

Theses and Dissertations

In the aftermath of the bloody twenty-year internal conflict in Peru, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación, or CVR) documented the massive human rights violations by Sendero Luminoso and the Peruvian state. The CVR contextualized these abuses by producing a broad historical narrative which has fomented the creation of a new discourse in Peruvian cultural production. This thesis is concerned with how the CVR and the post-conflict search for reconciliation have influenced contemporary Peruvian literature. This paper will focus on the ‘Redención' trilogy by novelist Alonso Cueto. The three novels explore notions of forgiveness and …

Huérfanos De Orfeo: Poesía Y Música En La Cultura De Los Siglos De Oro, Lorena Uribe Bracho Feb 2018

Huérfanos De Orfeo: Poesía Y Música En La Cultura De Los Siglos De Oro, Lorena Uribe Bracho

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is an attempt to elucidate some aspects of one of the central issues in the history of lyric poetry, which is the complicated interlace of connections between poetry and music. It focusses on the case of early modern Spain, and it studies a large corpus of poetry in Spanish from 1500 to 1700. The corpus includes Renaissance and Baroque poems of many genres and from many sources, both printed and manuscript, by canonical and by lesser known poets, all of which engage with music and musical practice.

I address the questions of how music is involved in poetry’s …

Una Democracia Aterrorrizada: Justicia Y Afecto En Los Textos De La Transición Democrática Argentina, Mariana Graciano Sep 2017

Una Democracia Aterrorrizada: Justicia Y Afecto En Los Textos De La Transición Democrática Argentina, Mariana Graciano

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation analyzes the links between justice and affect in some of the most emblematic texts of the democratic transition in Argentina. Films, novels and photos are incorporated here as texts or complex utterances, as they constitute a framework of signs with a communicative intention that makes sense in a given context. In order to analyze these links, I consider terms from the field of transitional justice (reconciliation, forgiveness, restoration) and specific affects (terror, empathy, guilt, resentment, tenderness, happiness and cruelty).

The key questions guiding this thesis are: what links did visual arts and literature have in relation to the …

Rodrigo Rey Rosa’S "El Material Humano" And The Labyrinth Of Postwar Guatemala: On Ethics, Truth, And Justice, Nanci Buiza Oct 2016

Rodrigo Rey Rosa’S "El Material Humano" And The Labyrinth Of Postwar Guatemala: On Ethics, Truth, And Justice, Nanci Buiza

Spanish Faculty Works

Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s El material humano (2009) grapples with the consequences of Guatemala’s violent past by probing into a once-secret police archive that brings into the present the sufferings of the past. This article demonstrates how the novel unsettles our easy assumptions regarding the relation between documentary truth and the notions of justice and reconciliation. By charting the protagonist’s intellectual and emotional conflicts, I argue that his crisis ultimately serves a homeopathic function that makes possible a special mode of ethical engagement, one which brings into fruitful tension two distinct modes of cognition—thought and affect—and is thus able to register …
