Collaborative Constructions: Designing High School History Curriculum With The Lost & Found Game Series, Owen Gottlieb, Shawn Clybor
Articles
This chapter addresses design research and iterative curriculum design for the Lost & Found games series. The Lost & Found card-to-mobile series is set in Fustat (Old Cairo) in the twelfth century and focuses on religious laws of the period. The first two games focus on Moses Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah, a key Jewish law code. A new expansion module which was in development at the time of the fieldwork described in this article that introduces Islamic laws of the period, and a mobile prototype of the initial strategy game has been developed with support National Endowment for the Humanities. Inequality In Ethnic Representation In Secondary-School Literature Textbooks And National Examination In Vietnam, Anh Nguyen
Honors Projects
This essay studies the dynamic between ethnic minorities and majority in the Vietnamese education system. By examining the appearance and representation of ethnic minorities in national literature curriculum, textbooks, and examinations, the analysis reflects the government's perspectives regarding the “appropriate” portrait of ethnic minorities' heritage and relationship with the majority. The study finds that Vietnamese education framework and content comply with the national construct of a Vietnamese identity across ethnicities. The state determines educational materials and selectively permits only aesthetic, politically benign, and Kinh-like narratives of ethnic minorities’ cultures, many written and/or chosen by Kinh authority rather than the ethnic …

Assessing Career Planning Courses Without Using Test Scores: Another Neglected Issue?, Alison Holmes Phd, Loren Collins Ma
Assessing Career Planning Courses Without Using Test Scores: Another Neglected Issue?, Alison Holmes Phd, Loren Collins Ma
Career and Curriculum Connections: integrating career education across the disciplines (2017)
Twenty years ago, in an article entitled “Assigning Grades in Career Planning Courses: A Neglected issue”[1], Rex Filer posed several important questions in terms of the practicalities of how we design and grade career planning courses. The challenge, he suggested, is that while teaching pedagogy often relies on Bloom’s traditional taxonomy where information and understanding act as an ‘anchor’ while synthesis and evaluation are goals achieved later, career course activities are naturally geared to the top of the pyramid – regardless of when the class is taught. This, he argues, poses particular issues in terms of career course …

Career Planning And Curriculum Integration: Millennials On The ‘Lost’ Coast, Alison Holmes Phd, Loren Collins Ma
Career and Curriculum Connections: integrating career education across the disciplines (2017)
Career preparation during college is increasingly an area of interest and concern not only for the parents, family and friends of prospective students, but administrators, politicians, and even the average taxpayer. As costs continue to rise, the ‘value’ of higher education is no longer based primarily on the goal of preparing a future generation to participate in, and to lead a democratic civil society, but on how competitive students will be in the global marketplace as a result. Humboldt State University is located approximately 300 miles north of San Francisco in a relatively isolated region known as the ‘lost coast’, …

Using Concept Maps And Goal-Setting To Support The Development Of Self-Regulated Learning In A Problem-Based Learning Curriculum, Lisa K. Thomas, Sue Bennett, Lori Lockyer
Using Concept Maps And Goal-Setting To Support The Development Of Self-Regulated Learning In A Problem-Based Learning Curriculum, Lisa K. Thomas, Sue Bennett, Lori Lockyer
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
Problem-based learning (PBL) in medical education focuses on preparing independent learners for continuing, self-directed, professional development beyond the classroom. Skills in self-regulated learning (SRL) are important for success in PBL and ongoing professional practice. However, the development of SRL skills is often left to chance. This study presents the investigated outcomes for students when support for the development of SRL was embedded in a PBL medical curriculum. This investigation involved design, delivery and testing of SRL support, embedded into the first phase of a four-year, graduate-entry MBBS degree. The intervention included concept mapping and goal-setting activities through iterative processes of …

Academic teaching staff are often required to complete a compulsory learning and teaching program for probation. Until recently, the University of Wollongong has offered such a course to their probationary staff which aimed to enhance teaching practice within the institution. However, there was no expectation of further development of learning and teaching practice following probation. During 2014 a new program was developed. The Continuing Professional Development for Learning and Teaching program - CPD (L&T) - is underpinned by a framework of teaching criteria emanating from an extensive review of institutional, national and international benchmarks. For CPD (L&T) certification, staff may …
The Effect Of Refugees On Jordanian Identity, Max Yenkin
The Effect Of Refugees On Jordanian Identity, Max Yenkin
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Jordan has become known as the home for refugees from the crises that have occurred along its borders. Several waves of large groups of refugees have come to Jordan: 1948, 1967, 1991, 2003, and 2011-present, with copious amounts of refugees coming from different surrounding countries to Jordan. The Hashemite Kingdom is ruled through keeping relations between the Bedouin tribes that have lived in the area from the founding of the country. This has led to the denial of equality for former refugees who obtained citizenship as well as the other refugee populations in areas such as work and education. As …

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
This paper describes the development of a model for institution-wide curriculum transformation at the University of Wollongong (UOW). Transition - a curriculum-integrated approach that enables a smooth, supported shift into and through higher education and a successful transition from the university to the world of work and lifelong learning - is one of three key principles at the heart of the UOW Curriculum Model. This paper focuses on transition as a whole-of-curriculum design principle and the way this principle informs the other elements of the UOW Curriculum Model. It aims to extend the concept of "transition pedagogy" developed by Kift …
Embedding Moocs In Academic Programs As A Part Of Curriculum Transformation: A Pilot Case Study, Sarah R. Lambert, Irit Alony
Embedding Moocs In Academic Programs As A Part Of Curriculum Transformation: A Pilot Case Study, Sarah R. Lambert, Irit Alony
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
The University of Wollongong’s first locally developed and hosted Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “The Reluctant Mathematician” was a highly scaffolded MOOC designed to support stressed and low-efficacy maths learners. It was developed to lift maths skills at our university and also in the community – where maths skills continue to be a challenge and in some cases a source of stress. Internally the MOOC provided an alternative online way to support students who struggle with mathematics at university level, and as a complement to the existing face to face services. This paper describes a successful approach to using MOOCs …
Curriculum Design For Assuring Learning - Leading The Way: Final Report, Romy Lawson
Curriculum Design For Assuring Learning - Leading The Way: Final Report, Romy Lawson
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
Executive Summary: Assuring learning is a vital element in educational practice. It is a feedback mechanism for learning and teaching practice, allowing educators to review students' achievements in relation to the expectations set for the learning experience, and to use this data to continually inform practice. All those involved in education should be engaged with assuring learning, but in the current standards-driven climate, it is regularly viewed as a compliance activity and a burden that encroaches on teaching and research time. This view needs to be dismissed: a cultural change is required to encourage mindsets that recognise that assurance of …
Treasure Hunt Without A Map: Archival Research At The University Of Pennsylvania, Meghan Strong
Treasure Hunt Without A Map: Archival Research At The University Of Pennsylvania, Meghan Strong
English Independent Study Projects
Under the supervision of Meredith Goldsmith in the English Department, I spent this semester developing archival research projects for lower level students in the humanities. My project corresponded with the aims of the Council for Undergraduate Research, which works to develop undergraduate research skills throughout the disciplines. The Kislak Center is a nearby resource that has the potential to provide students with opportunities to develop crucial research skills while discovering little pieces of history that are hidden away in the archives. The final exercises presented here focus on the subjects of Walt Whitman, Marian Anderson, and Michel de Montaigne.
Internationalization, Internalization, And Intersectionality Of Identity: A Critical Race Feminist Re-Images Curriculum, Theodorea Regina Berry
Internationalization, Internalization, And Intersectionality Of Identity: A Critical Race Feminist Re-Images Curriculum, Theodorea Regina Berry
Faculty Publications
This poetry/paper article is a re-accounting, a poetic counterstory in curriculum, of the praxis of an African American female teacher-educator working against internalized notions of curriculum as standards by re-imagining curriculum through the lives of third grade students and her teacher education colleagues. Using critical race feminism (Berry, 2010; Berry & Mizelle, 2006; Wing, 2003) as her framework, the author will describe how she moves curriculum from internalized to connected, collective, and introspective. The author will provide her rationale for the necessity of such movements in curriculum and will conclude the paper with a discussion about the possibilities that exist …

Development and delivery of a subject called Employability Skills and ICT Workplace Practice, targeted at international students taking Masters of Engineering Studies is reported. Almost all of the students are international with a desire to stay and work in Australia. In practice however, seeking professional employment in Australia has proved quite challenging for many of these students. A study conducted by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry identifies certain ‘soft skills’ in demand by employers. These include: initiative, communication, teamwork, technology, problem solving, self-management and planning. The learning objectives of the subject are designed to further develop and enhance …
Informing Curriculum Design Using Genre Analysis: A Study Of Three Genres In Japanese, Elizabeth A. Thomson
Informing Curriculum Design Using Genre Analysis: A Study Of Three Genres In Japanese, Elizabeth A. Thomson
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
The notion that texts in Japanese can be described in terms of text type or genre is not a new or novel approach. However, such descriptions are not common. This paper presents a description of three genres in Japanese: the factual news commentary, the hard news story and the soft news story. The descriptions have been informed by systemic functional linguistics, in particular by work 011 the system of THEME (Halliday 1994, Martin 1993, Mathiessen 1995), thematic patterns of progression (Danes 1974, Fries 1983, Ghadessy /995) and generic structure potential (GSP) (Hasan 1996). The GSP representation o/the genres enables a …

Tertiary literacy instruction and assessment were introduced into two first year biology subjects as part of a collaboration between Biological Sciences and Learning Development staff at the University of Wollongong. In both subjects, the project focussed on scientific report assessment items based on aspects of the practical curriculum. The project involved production and use of a web site giving instruction in report writing and general guidance on scientific writing, marking schemes using explicit criteria including literacy based criteria, a peer marking tutorial, and marking and feedback using the schemes. The results from assessments in the second subject, which included the …

A Comparative Study Of Academic Achievement Of Students From Phased-Elective Social Studies Curriculum With Students From A Traditional Social Studies Curriculum, Dennis Minnix
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this study, the academic achievement of two groups of University students was compared. The control group consisted of 15 students who had attended a traditional high school. The experimental group consisted of 25 students who had attended a high school which utilized a phased-elective curriculum design.
The students were observed at three points in their schooling. First, students were compared at the end of the eighth grade to determine if any significant difference existed prior to their exposure to the two high school programs. Next, students were observed at the end of their high school education by comparing scores …
