French Place Names In Clark County, Arkansas, Joe Jeffers

French place names are common in Arkansas, especially in south Arkansas, where after the French explorers left, French trappers and settlers from Canada moved in. Some of those names remain unchanged from the original French. General usage and English speaking settlers modified others. Clark County was one of five counties established in the Arkansas Territory. Its boundaries changed five times before reaching its present form in 1877. This article explores French place names in today’s Clark County and in the original Clark County formed in 1818.

Irma Helen Hopkins was born in Horatio, Arkansas, May 15, 1930. As a student at Ouachita College, she began studying journalism major and won awards for her writing, but then pursued music. She graduated from Ouachita Baptist College in 1952 with a B.A. in violin and speech; Southwestern Seminary with a B.M.S. in voice and choral conducting; M.M. in voice from George Peabody College in Nashville, and earned a doctorate in musical arts at Temple University. She taught at Mars Hill College, George Peabody College, West Virginia Wesleyan College, the University of Pittsburgh, and then at Murray State University. She …

Ellis R. Bennett of Union County, Arkansas, served in Europe during World War I as a part of the United States Army, Company B, 13th Engineers. The unit consisted of men experienced in various phases of the operation of railways. Ellis Bennett characterized his position as an "operator," and his interest in communications continued after his military service was over. Bennett died in 1945 at the Army and Navy Hospital in Hot Springs. He was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery.

This collection contains numerous items from the World War I era that illustrate Ellis Bennett's military service and family life. …

Clark County was established in 1818, and therefore became one of the five counties in existence at the time the area became known as Arkansas Territory in 1819. Court was held in various places in those early days, such as the home of pioneer settler Jacob Barkman, west of the Caddo River, near what is now Caddo Valley. Later, a county seat was established at Greenville, which was located to the southwest along the Military Road (also known as the Southwest Trail). In 1842 Arkadelphia (previously known as Blakelytown) became the permanent location of the county seat.

Prescott First Baptist Church was organized in 1876 in Nevada County, Arkansas. The congregation of eight members worshipped in the Ansley Academy on West Main Street on the second Sunday of each month. A frame church was built in 1877, and a Sunday School was added in 1884. Through the years various other church structures have been constructed. The First Baptist Church of Prescott is currently affiliated with the Red River Baptist Association, Arkansas Baptist State Convention, and Southern Baptist Convention.

[Excerpt] Among these American hillmen descendants is the MacCleod Family (pseudonym). In early 2001, I heard stories about a clan that lived in the Ouachita woods like "savages." Not originally from Arkansas, I had often heard scornful jokes about Arkansas being a backward state. This perpetuated stereotype enticed m to find out if these extreme MacCleod tales were true. A great number of general works on American Negro slavery have been published, but most are based upon records from the plantation belt. With the notable exception of Orville Taylor's Negro Slavery in Arkansas, these works almost entirely ignore Arkansas. Although slavery had certain uniformity throughout the South, the study of these previously untouched areas add to, and may eventually modify, our knowledge of the Old South's "peculiar institution."

Campaign style has changed dramatically since the turn of the century when William Jennings Bryan captured the political limelight. Bryan, a three time Democratic nominee for President, developed a new campaign tactic during the 1896 Presidential election; he continued to employ the new style for the remainder of his life. In 1896 Bryan's political organization could not compete with the well-financed Republican system, so the "Great Commoner" took his cause to the people. Many methods have been found by which two men may solve a dispute between them. The methods can be broadly divided as either violent or nonviolent. Among the violent methods, dueling was considered in the nineteenth century in Arkansas as a proper means of solving disputes concerning politics, honor, and family, as well as trivial matters.

For many years, the school elections in Little Rock have followed a traditional pattern of meager voter turnout . School elections, prior to the 1967 election, were mentioned briefly in newspaper articles. The platforms were of the same general nature year after year. They included taxes, school expansion, better facilities, and higher teacher salaries. Candidates seldom, if ever, campaigned publicly and actively. Posters were usually placed throughout the city.
