A Study Of Little Rock School District 1966-1968 Elections And Their Effect On Public School Policy, Ray Earl Garner

OBU Graduate Theses

For many years, the school elections in Little Rock have followed a traditional pattern of meager voter turnout . School elections, prior to the 1967 election, were mentioned briefly in newspaper articles. The platforms were of the same general nature year after year. They included taxes, school expansion, better facilities, and higher teacher salaries. Candidates seldom, if ever, campaigned publicly and actively. Posters were usually placed throughout the city. A few days prior to the election, newspaper ads with the candidates' pictures would appear in the Arkansas Democrat and the Arkansas Gazette. The 1967 school election was significant, because that …

A Study Of The Role Of Churches In The Enactment Of The Arkansas Prohibition Law Of 1917, Ralph Bradley Hoshaw

OBU Graduate Theses

Churches have been involved in the moral and ethical standards of the United States and its political subdivisions since the formation of the nation. Major questions about the churches' involvement as a social force in the nation or in the community concern: (1) the degree of involvement, (2) the methods employed and (3) the relative effectiveness of church influence upon the mores and laws of any society or state. To answer these questions, a historical study must be made of a particular moral problem in a specific locale and of the role that church influence or direct action played in …

An Analysis Of The Governorship Of Huey Long, N. G. Dalrymple

OBU Graduate Theses

Huey Pierce Long was one of the most flamboyant . and controversial political leaders of the early twentieth century. Elected Governor of Louisiana in 1928 on the platform "Every Man a King," Long soon became nationally known for his erratic and picturesque behavior as "the Kingfish."

The New York Times heralded the election of Huey Long as Governor of the Pelican State as the appearance of "a worthy competitor in the field of light political farce." Later, many persons realized. that the statement was not entirely accurate. What Louisiana received in Huey Long was highly political, but it was far …

The Truman Victory Of 1948, David Edwin Wallace

OBU Graduate Theses

The results of the Presidential election of 1948 produced one of the most stunning upsets in the history of elections in the United States. The odds against Harry S. Truman's winning re- election were considerable. As President, he was following one of the outstanding politicians in American history, Franklin Delano Roosevelt .

In April of 1948, disaffected New Dealers and many city political bosses, feeling that Truman could not win the election, attempted to convince first General Dwight D. Eisenhower and then Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas to run for President on the Democratic ticket. Up until the time …

A Study Of The Sin And Death Of Moses In Biblical Literature, Harry E. Woodall

OBU Graduate Theses

Recently Dr. Clyde T. Francisco, who is professor of Old Testament interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, suggested that one of the great mysteries of the Bible is contained in the sin and death of Moses. Inquiry into the subject has validated his statement, for the interpretation of Moses' sin and death has been subject to many theories and speculations. The following Biblical passages are concerned with the sin and death of Moses: Numbers 20:1-13; 22-29; 27:12-14; Deuteronomy 1:35-40; 3:23-29; 4:21-24; 32:48-52; 34:1-7. Other related Biblical passages include Psalm 106:32-33, ·Mark 9:2-13 and synoptic parallels including Matthew 17: 1-13 and …

The United States And African Nationalism In British East Africa Since 1945, Clarence A. Allison

OBU Graduate Theses

World War II brought about a realignment of the power structure among the nations of the world. The primary conflict of interest developed between Russian and the Western nations, with the United States predominant among them.

Through the leverage afforded by the East-West conflict, African nations were able to exert enough force to dislodge the colonial powers which had ruled them for nearly a century.

Early efforts to unite the African people were carried out in the United States and other Western nations, with American Negroes leading the drive. Among these men were W.E.B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey.

The United …
