Writing Doesn't Begin With Writing: Initial Findings From A Case Study On How Doctoral Students Become Ethnographers And Scholarly Writers, C Ullman, Kate Mangelsdorf

Kate Mangelsdorf

How do novice ethnographers learn to become researchers? In this presentation we share data that is part of a larger ethnographic study looking at how doctoral students from two disciplines (education and rhetoric) who are enrolled in an ethnographic research course develop into ethnographic researchers and writers.  We conducted an action research-ethnographic study about the processual experiences of eight doctoral students in a year-long doctoral seminar in which we are the instructor/researchers. Drawing on class assignments, interviews, field notes, and the students’ reflective journals, we describe the various pathways the students take as they become ethnographic researchers.  This presentation will …

Kate Mangelsdorf

In this presentation, we will report on several semesters of survey data collected
from 200 students enrolled in first-year composition courses at two universities on the U.S.-Mexico border.  These students represent a range of language proficiencies and socioeconomic backgrounds, though all self-identified as multilingual to some degree.   In addition to collecting information about students’ backgrounds, the survey asked students to reflect on the particular challenges of their writing class and on their sense of control in determining their final grade.   The survey analysis compared the responses from students who received high grades in the course with those who …

Inquiry Practices In Transnational Contexts, Kate Mangelsdorf

Kate Mangelsdorf

This presentation focuses on the research risks and rewards experienced by the previous speakers, including pragmatic issues such as obtaining IRB approval, accessing technology, and communicating in more than one language.   I will also give an overview of how common research methodologies, such as ethnography, feminist rhetorical investigations, various schools of grounded theory, and critical discourse analysis might alter their approaches in global research settings.    Most significantly, I will point to the need to develop a critical orientation toward transnational research in digital spaces, one that insistently questions the researcher’s positionality and the economic, cultural, linguistic and gendered power dynamics in …

Getting Meta: Ethnographers Of Ethnographic Learning And The Team Teaching Of A Doctoral Course On Team Ethnography, Char Ullman, Kate Mangelsdorf

Kate Mangelsdorf

Learning to do ethnographic research is a rite of passage in anthropology, and often it starts with a field school experience.  However, as ethnography has come to be employed across different disciplines, the ways of learning to do ethnography have necessarily shifted. This presentation explores how two faculty from different departments came together to create a doctoral course that allowed students to conduct an ethnographic study together over the course of one semester. Students learned to gather and analyze data and they wrote individual and co-authored manuscripts. We, the instructors, developed a special journal issue proposal to include all of …
