Implementing Writing Activities In A Postsecondary Tutoring Program For Students With Intellectual Disabilities, Milya Maxfield

Peer mentors who work with students with intellectual disabilities at the post-secondary level are uniquely situated in their roles both as students and as tutors to assist their students not only with their academic work but also in modeling learning strategies one-on-one. This brief study, including both quantitative and qualitative survey data, establishes a baseline for tutors’ self-confidence when it comes to their own writing and tutoring their students in writing. This thesis examines the careers of three graduates of Kennesaw State University’s Bachelor of Arts in English program. Through a semi-structured interview process which relied on the memory of participants, information was gained about skills employers sought for specific positions, skills interview participants utilized in those positions, and skills participants learned in the Bachelor of Arts in English program at Kennesaw State University. The goal of the study was to learn and connect the skills and abilities of the English majors to their job titles and responsibilities.

Such responsibility may be vital for English teachers, especially, as we strive to establish communities of writers and spaces for critical thinking and conversation. When I sat down to write about this experience, I saw it as an opportunity to discuss a taboo situation and its positive aftermath, with the aim of demonstrating how it might be possible to use such events as points of departure in creating engaging writing assignments.
