Speculations On Real And Virtual Worlds Fall Short, Katherine G. Schmidt Ph.D. Oct 2011

Speculations On Real And Virtual Worlds Fall Short, Katherine G. Schmidt Ph.D.

Faculty Works: TRS (2010-2022)

Every day millions of people get together -- virtually -- to trade goods, slay beasts and talk to wizards -- all from the comfort of their computer chairs. At first blush, the fantastic world of online video games like “World of Warcraft” and “EverQuest” -- where people are slaying those beasts -- may appear to be just another form of entertainment.

Prophet Of The Electric Age: Marshall Mcluhan’S Post-Curial Catholicism, Michael W. Higgins Oct 2011

Prophet Of The Electric Age: Marshall Mcluhan’S Post-Curial Catholicism, Michael W. Higgins

Mission Integration & Ministry Publications

The author explores the Catholicism of Herbert Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian literary scholar and communications theorist. The author notes that McLuhan's Catholicism seldom surfaces in the writings of his biographers. Higgins believes McLuhan's Catholicisim deserves a fuller exploration since faith was profoundly constitutive in his life and thought. The author also claims that McLuhan's reasons for conversion differentiated him from the conventional intellectual.

Sherpa Inc. The Cultural Commoditization Of The Sherpa Identity, Melissa Mittelman Oct 2011

Sherpa Inc. The Cultural Commoditization Of The Sherpa Identity, Melissa Mittelman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study examines the ways the Sherpa identity has been commoditized for a Western audience, the Sherpa responses to such a process and the repercussions it creates when understanding Sherpa cultural “authenticity.” Located in Kathmandu and the Solukhumbu district of Nepal, the findings were acquired through interviews with various members of the Sherpa community, discourse analysis and observation. This research concludes that the Sherpa community views their cultural commoditization as both a source of discredit and honor, creating difficulty in rationalizing how it both de-authenticates and re-asserts their Sherpa culture.

Lessons From A Tentmaking Ascetic In The Egyptian Desert: The Case Of Evagrius Of Pontus, Edward L. Smither Oct 2011

Lessons From A Tentmaking Ascetic In The Egyptian Desert: The Case Of Evagrius Of Pontus, Edward L. Smither

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

In this article, an invitation is given to modern practitioners and thinkers on missionary tentmaking - especially those from the majority world- to reflect on the apparent tentmaking approach of the fourth-century monk Evagrius of Pontus (c. 345-399). Though not a missionary himself, Evagrius proved to be innovative in his approach to work, which sustained his primary spiritual calling- monasticism. After exploring the necessity and context for his manual labor, his theology of work and the relationship between physical and spiritual labor will be considered. Finally, some suggestions for applying Evagrius' tentmaking principles will be offered.

Review Of George Tyrrell And Catholic Modernism, David G. Schultenover Oct 2011

Review Of George Tyrrell And Catholic Modernism, David G. Schultenover

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

This collection of strong contributions to Roman Catholic modernism studies originated from a laudable desire to commemorate George Tyrrell, a so-called modernist and former member of the English Province of the Society of Jesus, on the centenary of his death. Oliver Rafferty's chapter I historically contextualizes what follows. The book's centerpiece is Clara Ginther's superb essay on Tyrrell's seminal article, "The Relation of Theology to Devotion" (1899). Ginther smartly shows how this article gives his corpus coherence. Anthony Maher's equally superb essay on Tyrrell's ecclesiology flows from his understanding of "devotion" as rooted in religious experience, which, in Tyrrell's case, …

Lawyering In The Christian Colony: Some Hauerwasian Themes, Reflections, And Questions, W. Bradley Wendel Sep 2011

Lawyering In The Christian Colony: Some Hauerwasian Themes, Reflections, And Questions, W. Bradley Wendel

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

One who shared Hauerwas's theological commitments might find it difficult to serve as a lawyer, given that the principles of legal ethics are grounded in the kind of political liberalism that Hauerwas finds repellent. For example, Stephen Pepper's well known liberal defense of the standard conception of legal ethics pretty much pushes all of the buttons that set off Hauerwas. Pepper argues that while the law necessarily imposes restrictions on what we may do, but no one else is empowered to place restrictions on our autonomy. In a complex, highly legalistic society, however, citizens are necessarily required in some cases …

Sensible, Prudent & Shrewd: Building Blocks For A Theology Of Efficiency, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

This paper examines operational efficiency from a biblical theology perspective. The paper describes operational efficiency in contemporary terms and considers six categories of constraints on efficiency. In pursuing its purpose the paper reviews six relevant biblical themes including: God‘s character, creation, covenant, shalom, blessing, and fruitfulness. The Logic Of The ‘As If’ And The Existence Of God: An Inquiry Into The Nature Of Belief In The Work Of Jacques Derrida, Colby Dickinson May 2011

The Logic Of The ‘As If’ And The Existence Of God: An Inquiry Into The Nature Of Belief In The Work Of Jacques Derrida, Colby Dickinson

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The religious thematics at play in the work of Jacques Derrida have often provided an ongoing platform from which to struggle with the entire scope of his work, thus moving the seemingly peripheral discourses on religion within his oeuvre to the center stage. Despite repeated attempts to come to terms both theologically and philosophically with the conditional nature of representations, the problematics of representation are perhaps nowhere more forcefully demonstrated than in the work of Derrida. Indeed, for Derrida, the ‘as if’, as a regulative principle directly appropriated and modified from its Kantian context, becomes the central lynchpin for understanding, …

Derrida And The Future(S) Of Phenomenology, Neal Deroo May 2011

Derrida And The Future(S) Of Phenomenology, Neal Deroo

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This paper seeks to examine the significance of Derrida’s work for an understanding of the basic tenets of phenomenology. Specifically, via an analysis of his understanding of the subject’s relation to the future, we will see that Derrida enhances the phenomenological understanding of temporality and intentionality, thereby moving the project of phenomenology forward in a unique way. This, in turn, suggests that future phenomenological research will have to account for an essential (rather than merely a secondary) role for both linguistic mediation and cultural and political factors within the phenomenological subject itself.

Continuity And Development In Roman Catholic Ecclesiology, Susan K. Wood May 2011

Continuity And Development In Roman Catholic Ecclesiology, Susan K. Wood

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

An overview of the conceptualizations of the Catholic Church from the theology of Bellarmine to contemporary understanding of the church as communion shows both continuity and development from one concept to the next rather than an abrupt change to a new model that discards the model preceding it. This essay examines the church as perfect society, church as mystical body, church as sacrament, church as people of God, and church as communion, demonstrating that the various conceptualizations represent development, balance, correction, and a deeper penetration in the understanding and articulation of the prior conceptualizations. The church as body of Christ …
