Curriculum As Theology: A Framework For Analyzing Curriculum As Theological Text, Russell Miller

The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community

This article seeks to establish a framework that contemplates curriculum as theological text by exploring the works of Neil Postman, W.F. Pinar, and C.S. Lewis in relation to past and present research and commentary. The paper investigates a range of concepts related to theology and curriculum including culture and religion, ethics, and morality. The author argues that curriculum is intrinsically a theological endeavor due to the nature of humanity and the interaction between learning and spiritual development.

Religious Education? Tell Me Why! An Essay On The Philosophy Of Education, Lydia Hyland Dec 2022

Religious Education? Tell Me Why! An Essay On The Philosophy Of Education, Lydia Hyland

Aristos

By first considering the nature of religious knowledge, I will discuss whether religious education should be part of every person’s education. In examining the aims of all education and human development in classical and Christian philosophy, we may explore how education in a Catholic context impels us to cultivate a person’s wholistic nature. I will aim to demonstrate how this occurs through fully embracing his spiritual dimension: encouraging, instilling, and modelling a lifelong desire and concurrently fostering a spiritual-intellectual capacity for right relationship with the divine (and, therein, with others and the world around them.) In so doing, educators help …

Jesus Christ Is Fully God, Not Just Fully Man, A. G. Erum Dec 2021

Jesus Christ Is Fully God, Not Just Fully Man, A. G. Erum

Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal

Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) is a big religious organization that began in the Philippines and is spreading across the globe. INC teaches that Jesus Christ, as the Son of God is a very special man only and not God. They claim this by using their interpretation of biblical passages, such as John 8:40, Luke 24:38-39, and 1 Timothy 2:5. Contrary to the Scriptures and Christian traditions, they believe that the only true God is God the Father, who is the only Creator of the universe. However, the Scriptures (especially the New Testament) and Christian traditions demonstrate that Jesus is God-Man. …

Pentecostal Culture, Or Pentecost Of Culture?: Transformation, Paradigms, Power, Unity, Dimitri Sala Ofm

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

This article will explore the relationship between Pentecostals and the broader cultures we inhabit. It will acknowledge that, like all religion, Pentecostalism can tend to create a culture within itself (a “Pentecostal culture”), which at times effects a withdrawal of its adherents from the surrounding world. This necessitates a conscious decision, first to navigate away from that tendency where it exists, and then to define a positive role for Pentecostalism within culture, viz., the transformation of civilization (a “Pentecost of culture”). Thereby the article proposes a more extensive definition of the baptism of the Spirit, looks at how God is …

Personhood, Threshold And Equality, Benjamin Leon Williamson Jan 2021

Personhood, Threshold And Equality, Benjamin Leon Williamson

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

Whether abortion and infanticide are permissible has been debated for a long time in philosophical literature and continues to this day. In this paper, I will assume without argument that one’s view about the moral status of the fetus and newborn will determine what side he/she comes down on in this debate. I am also proceeding with the assumption that personhood is not a conventional or linguistically effective device that has little or no connection to reality. Persons exist and personhood itself is real. With that being said, I will defend a more controversial claim that will undoubtedly stir a …

David Hume And Intelligent Design: A Counter Criticism, Benjamin Martin Jan 2021

David Hume And Intelligent Design: A Counter Criticism, Benjamin Martin

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

David Hume, the celebrated Scottish philosopher of the 18th century, wrote a work entitled Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, in which he provides a detailed criticism of several theistic arguments. In the Dialogues there are found 3 interlocutors, each of whom approaches natural religion from a different philosophical standpoint. Cleanthes is the character upon whose argumentation we will mainly focus, as he is the defender of the a posteriori argument from Intelligent Design. Philo, another interlocutor, is a philosophical skeptic who opposes Cleanthes' arguments. Out of the three, many consider Philo's positions to be representative of those of Hume himself. The …

Microfísicas De La Vida Queer: Sexualidad Y Fe En Intersección, Hugo Córdova Quero, Jorge A. Aquino Ph.D.

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This third issue of the Queer Connection: Latin American and Caribbean Journal of Queer Theologies focuses on advancing both the state of the art of queer theories, theologies, and pastorals, as well as the possibilities of future perspectives. The importance of the "religious" in the contributions of this issue bases on the need to connect with elements that make up everyday life - spirituality, rituals, practices, discourses, among others - that are often "excluded" from the discussions about what is queer in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Posesiones Sexo-Generizadas: Géneros Móviles Y Sexualidades Disputadas En Rituales De Kimbanda, Dahiana Barrales Palacio

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article outlines some interpretive and analytical clues that discuss the relationship between African-based religions and sexual and gender classifications in their doctrinal body. It mainly focuses on the performance of ritual manifestations. My election of Kimbanda rituals relies on the manifestations of Pomba Gira. This spiritual entity appears in the archetype of a sensual and powerful woman who, in her earthly life, was a prostitute. During the rituals, she becomes a queen. It concludes that African-based religions involve different ways of being and inhabiting the world, both material and spiritual. That characteristic allows for the bending of gender/sexual norms …

Mahmudkhuja Behbudiy As A Leader Of Jadid Reforms, Muminjon Xujaev

The Light of Islam

We are witnessing that the ideas of our Jadids, who tried to raise Turkestan through enlightenment to the level of world civilization at the beginning of the 20th century, and who showed modern education as a solution to the problems of that period, have not lost their signifcance today. In this sense, the study of the works of the famous orientalist Mahmudkhodja Behbudi based on new scientifc criteria plays an important role in the study of issues of interethnic communication, peaceful coexistence, education, culture, and religious tolerance. M. Behbudi in the late 19th and early 20th centuries began a systematic …

Abductive Moral Arguments And Godless Normative Realism: An Evaluation Of Explanations For Moral Facts And Motivations For Moral Behavior, Jonathan Smith

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

Within this paper, I examine Godless normative realism, a naturalistic explanation of morality given by Erik Wielenberg and determine whether the theory poses a threat to abductive moral arguments for the existence of God. In particular, I argue that Wielenberg’s theory is a possible explanation for the existence of moral facts and that it offers a motivation for one to act morally, but that theism, as a whole, remains a better explanation for the moral aspects of the world. To do so, I defend the legitimacy of weak forms of DCT, identify a few areas in which Godless normative …

A Christian Response To The Impact Of Nietzschean Philosophy On Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra, Amanda N. Staufer Apr 2019

A Christian Response To The Impact Of Nietzschean Philosophy On Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra, Amanda N. Staufer

Musical Offerings

This article explores the way Friedrich Nietzsche’s worldview influenced the compositions of Richard Strauss, specifically Strauss’s most famous work—a tone poem called Also sprach Zarathustra. This tone poem is a fascinating piece of music because it reflects Strauss’s philosophical inquiries into the nature and meaning of life. Although Strauss left relatively limited explanations of Also sprach Zarathustra, his few words regarding the tone poem reveal his intention to convey in music an idea of man’s evolution from his original state up to Nietzsche’s idea of a superman. First, this article surveys the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche as it is displayed …

Reconsidering Christianity As A Support For Secular Law: A Final Reply To Professor Calhoun, Wayne R. Barnes Feb 2019

Reconsidering Christianity As A Support For Secular Law: A Final Reply To Professor Calhoun, Wayne R. Barnes

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

This symposium has revolved around Professor Calhoun’s article, which posits that it is completely legitimate, in proposing laws and public policies, to argue for them in the public square based on overtly religious principles. In my initial response, I took issue with his argument that no reasons justify barring faith-based arguments from the public square argument. In fact, I do find reasons justifying the prohibition of “faith-based,” or Christian, arguments in the public square—and, in fact, I find such reasons within Christianity itself. This is because what is being publicly communicated in Christian political argumentation is that if citizens comply …
