The Theology Of Synagog Architecture (As Reflected In The Excavation Reports), Martin H. Scharlemann Dec 1959

The Theology Of Synagog Architecture (As Reflected In The Excavation Reports), Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The origins of the synagog are lost in the obscurity of the past. There seem to be adequate reasons for believing that this religious institution did not exist in pre-Exilic times. Whether, however, the synagog came into being during the dark years of the Babylonian Captivity, or whether it dates back only to the early centuries after the return of the Jews to Palestine, is a matter of uncertainty. The oldest dated evidence we have for the existence of a synagog was found in Egypt in 1902 and consists of a marble slab which records the dedication of such a …

Theology And Science, Paul M. Bretscher Nov 1959

Theology And Science, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

Less than a generation ago most people noted in science only its immediate anthropological implication. They argued whether man was descended from simian stock or, regardless of his ancestry, whether he was the inevitable outcome of predetermining causes. In either case the concept of God was next to irrelevant, and Christian theology seemed on its way out.

The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin Jun 1959

The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Christian doctrine of hum.an nature as a section of theology is fundamentally built upon the basis of the divine revelation in Scripture, and looks at .man in his relation to God. Therefore, the study of man's life in theology has its own principle which is different from that of science or philosophy. Since Christian anthropology is based on the divine revelation, there must be no contradiction between theological and scientific know1edge concerning life, but we cannot expect to get every detail of scientific answer of human nature out of the Bible.

The Doctrine Of Man In Genesis, Pyeng Seh Oh Jun 1959

The Doctrine Of Man In Genesis, Pyeng Seh Oh

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is, therefore, the fundamental teaching about man. in the Pre-Mosaic revelation that is dealt with in this thesis. This study will treat both individual man and a group of Men, viz., a society. It is plain from the previous explanation that this study is not limited by the traditional dogmatic division of Christian anthropology. It is a synthetic or systematic exegesis instead of the familiar consecutive exegesis, chapter by chapter, as presented in commentaries. This material will be collected under five cardinal themes on the doctrine of man in Genesis, with each theme displaying disparities and sim1larities or opinion …

The Case Of Athanasius Against Arius, Samuel Labuchli Jun 1959

The Case Of Athanasius Against Arius, Samuel Labuchli

Concordia Theological Monthly

Every age must restate the events of history because in every age these events appear in a specific focus. The contemporary theological discussion concerning ontological and existential knowledge, the essence of Biblical faith, and the meaning of language in Christian theology make the controversy of the fourth century a highly modern issue. Indeed, the 20th century has to state its Christological position afresh. It cannot simply repeat the fathers between Nicaea and Constantinople. Yet it can learn a great deal from these fathers by seeking to understand, sine ira et studio, the case of Athanasius versus Arius.

A Christian Answer To Marcion Of Pontus By Tertullian And Irenaeus, Carl Willard Beuschlein Jun 1959

A Christian Answer To Marcion Of Pontus By Tertullian And Irenaeus, Carl Willard Beuschlein

Bachelor of Divinity

The scope of the Church’s answer covers the whole field of theological thought. But because there are no existing sources of Marcion’s theology, except those contained in the answers of Christian writers, and, because even these writers have been selective, the scope of this study was necessarily limited to the basic problems of God, Scriptures, Christology, and Eschatology. The thesis of this study was that the Church, through Tertullian and Irenaeus, had answered Marcion’s attack thoroughly and decisively for the edification of the Church of Christ. For the purpose or proving this thesis, this study presents a brief outline of …

Prolegomena In Pieper And Aulen- A Comparison, Kurt E. Marquart Jun 1959

Prolegomena In Pieper And Aulen- A Comparison, Kurt E. Marquart

Bachelor of Divinity

Comparing Pieper and Aulen involves (1) an exposition of both positions, and (2) a juxtaposition of the two in a way which will actually exhibit their mutual relations. Whatever is relevant, to the understanding of either position In terms of thesis or antithesis is relevant to the thesis. Since this involves practically limitless source-material, a rigorous selectivity had to be exercised. Naturally this involves the element of judgment on the writer’s part, since he must select what seems particularly relevant and reject what does not. This thesis does not pretend to be anything like an exhaustive treatment. It attempts merely …

Theology And Love, Richard R. Caemmerer Apr 1959

Theology And Love, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Two customs of thought have tended to erect, if not a barrier, at least a filter between theology and Christian life.

The one is the hoary distinction between the "doctrinal" and the "practical" portions of the epistles - as though the apostles were "teaching" less strenuously when they were shaping the life and behavior of their readers than when they were discussing their faith. The other is the theologically more recent distinction between kerygma and didache and the assumption that when a preacher wants to save people, he tells them about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; when he …

The Seventeenth Century Dogmaticians As Philosophers, A. C. Ahlen Mar 1959

The Seventeenth Century Dogmaticians As Philosophers, A. C. Ahlen

Concordia Theological Monthly

To assert that philosophy and theology are not identical would obviously be unnecessary in addressing myself to the present group; but to remind you that there are vast areas of common interest shared by these two disciplines is probably not superfluous. Living as we do in a time when reason is often ridiculed and up-to-the- minute theologians present highly rationalized arguments in favor of antirational views, we need to remind ourselves that philosophy is inescapable. The moment we reflect critically upon our experiences and beliefs, we begin to philosophize.
