The Utilization Of Faith Development Theory And Faith Styles Perspective To Shape A Christian Education Program, Cathy Robbs Turner
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of the faith development of members of the congregation of Oak View Methodist Church. The research evaluated the relationship between a person’s faith level and his/her participation in Christian education. Contributing to the body of faith development research, this research served as an extension of Fowler’s (1981) Faith Development Theory (FDT), as well as the Faith Styles Model (Streib, 2001; 2005), which is an advancement of FDT. In this mixed-method study the researcher also investigated whether there is a significant relationship between the Faith Development Interview (FDI), a qualitative measure of …

A Common Word?’ Reflections On Christian-Muslim Dialogue, Larry Poston
A Common Word?’ Reflections On Christian-Muslim Dialogue, Larry Poston
Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship
On September 13, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI addressed an audience at the University of Regensburgon the topic of “Faith, Reason, and the University.” While his message focused on the necessity of maintaining a religious faith based upon and commensurate with Reason, a quotation early in the speech from the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Paleologus (1350-1425) produced a highly negative reaction from Muslims around the world. In a discussion with a Persian scholar on the subject of Christianity’s relationship to Islam, the emperor had challenged his Muslim colleague to “show … just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you …

Church And Society: The Laurence J. Mcginley Lectures, 1988-2007, Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., Robert P. Imbelli
Religion
One of the leading theologians of our time, Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., has written and lectured on a wide range of topics across his distinguished career, and for a wide range of audiences. Integrating faith and scholarship, he has created a rich body of work that, in the words of one observer, is “both faithful to Catholic tradition and fresh in its engagement with the contemporary world.”
Here, brought together for the first time in one volume, are the talks Cardinal Dulles has given twice each year since the Laurence J. McGinley Lectures were initiated in 1988, conceived broadly as …

Redeeming Indian ‘Christian’ Womanhood?: Missionaries, Dalits, And Agency In Colonial India, Chad M. Bauman
Redeeming Indian ‘Christian’ Womanhood?: Missionaries, Dalits, And Agency In Colonial India, Chad M. Bauman
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
This study of dalit Christians in colonial North India suggests that women who converted to Christianity in the region often experienced a contraction of the range of their activities. Bauman analyzes this counterintuitive result of missionary work and then draws on the work of Saba Mahmood and others to interrogate the predilection of feminist historians for agents, rabble-rousers, and gender troublemakers. The article concludes not only that this predilection represents a mild form of egocentrism but also that it prevents historians from adequately analyzing the complexity of factors that motivate and influence human behavior.
Postcolonial Anxiety And Anti-Conversion Sentiment In The Report Of The Christian Missionary Activities Enquiry Committee, Chad M. Bauman
Postcolonial Anxiety And Anti-Conversion Sentiment In The Report Of The Christian Missionary Activities Enquiry Committee, Chad M. Bauman
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Conversion to Christianity is one of the most politically charged issues in contemporary India and has recently been very much in the news.1 For example, in 2006, on the fiftieth anniversary of B. R. Ambedkar’s conversion to Buddhism2 hundreds of dalits gathered to convert, some to Buddhism and others to Christianity, rejecting Hinduism, a religion they claim oppresses and demeans them. In attacks on Christians in Orissa at the end of 2007 (and associated reprisals), dozens of churches, homes, and businesses were destroyed, hundreds of people were injured, and thousands were displaced.
Towards A Theology Of Liberation, Angus Brook
Towards A Theology Of Liberation, Angus Brook
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
In 1971 Gustavo Gutierrez was the first theologian to pronounce the advent of the theology of liberation. This book received both praise and criticism for its ‘radical new’ approach to theological endeavour. This paper will attempt to provide a broad overview of the complex processes or possibilities which led to the publishing of this book. In doing so, I will focus my discussion upon what has made liberation theology possible; the cultural environment, the intellectual inspiration, and the events that have played an important role in its development. Of course, I cannot hope to give depth to the breadth of …

Paul The Reluctant Witness: Power And Weakness In Luke's Portrayal [Review Of The Book Paul The Reluctant Witness: Power And Weakness In Luke's Portrayal By B. Shipp], Rubén R. Dupertuis

That the Acts of the Apostles includes three slightly different accounts of Paul's Damascus road encounter with Jesus has long presented a challenge to interpreters. In this book Blake Shipp seeks to understand the function of the three accounts in Acts 9, 22, and 26 within the larger narrative sweep of Acts by means of a rhetorical analysis. Critical of what he calls the chaotic state of current rhetorical criticism, Shipp also proposes guidelines for the application of rhetorical analysis of the New Testament, something he terms a "literary-rhetorical" method. The bulk of Shipp's analysis of Acts consists of the …

Religion Faculty Research
This book collects nine studies by the author, each of which addresses slightly different aspects of the study of earliest Christianity in Palestine. All but one of the essays have been previously published between the years 2000 and 2006. As such, the book does not systematically work toward a single argument; nonetheless, the various chapters display a remarkable unity by virtue of addressing aspects of the study of the Synoptic Gospels and by means of a largely consistent methodological approach that can be described as a combination of typical New Testament methods and approaches, such as form and redaction criticism, …

What Does It Mean To Be A Christian?: The Views Of Joseph Smith And Soren Kierkegaard, David L. Paulsen
What Does It Mean To Be A Christian?: The Views Of Joseph Smith And Soren Kierkegaard, David L. Paulsen
BYU Studies Quarterly
The Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) and the American prophet Joseph Smith (1804-1844) both radically critiqued nineteenth-century Christian culture. Though Søren often directed critiques specifically toward the State Church of Denmark, his ultimate target was Christianity as a whole, or simply "Christendom." Joseph's critique singled out no specific church; he also focused on Christianity as a whole. Notwithstanding important differences, Paulsen finds Søren's and Joseph's critiques of nineteenth-century Christendom mutually reinforcing and illuminating. The comparison of Smith's and Kierkegaard's views includes the following ideas: (1) the New Testament church no longer existed, (2) Christian theology had become defiled, (3) the …
