The False Arguments For The Modern Theory Of Open Questions, C. F. Walther, W. Arndt

A further argument for this theory is the view that evidently for ecclesiastical unity not more is required than agreement in the teachings laid down in the public confession of the Church; that these are the only ones fixed by the Church itself; that on these only the Church has made pronouncements and decisions; and that everything else has to be considered as belonging to the category of open questions.

The Saxons Move To Perry County, P. E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
When the Saxon Lutherans reached the metropolis of the central Mississippi Valley, then a town of some 16,000 inhabitants, their plans had not yet fully matured. Only one point seems to have been reasonably certain, namely, that they did not intend to remain in St. Louis. In the Regulations for the Emigrant, approved in Dresden on May 17, 1838, paragraph 4 reads:
"Place of Settlement. -The place of colonization in the United States of North America is to be chosen in one of the Western States in Missouri or Illinois or perhaps in Indiana."

The Bearing Of The Theory Of Evolution Upon The Chrisitian Doctrine Of Man, Theodore Martin
The Bearing Of The Theory Of Evolution Upon The Chrisitian Doctrine Of Man, Theodore Martin
Bachelor of Divinity
Evolution is an attempt to explain present conditions. In reality it consists of a number of explanatory attempts, none of which are satisfactory. All involve change, a development of the simple into the complex. Evolution has been defined as a "change due to circumstances,” but this is only a part of the story. As it is generally understood, evolution means much more than this. It means a development in matter resulting from the action or forces resident in matter itself.

The Means Of Grace, F. E. Mayer

How does the infinite God reveal Himself to finite man? How can union and communion between God and man be established? There is an inherent longing in man to bridge the chasm which separates the unknown, absolute God from sinful, mortal man, and since Adam's fall natural man has attempted to penetrate into the being, counsels, attitude, and mysteries of God.

When this initial number of the 1939 volume of the CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY reaches the reader, it will almost be a century since the Saxon Pilgrim Fathers of the Missouri Synod arrived at their destination - St. Louis. The political, economic, and religious situation which they left behind and that into which they came were about as distressing and bewildering as the one in which we are placed one hundred years later.
