St. Augustine's Theology Of Grace, John Van Lierop Nov 1947

St. Augustine's Theology Of Grace, John Van Lierop

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

As a result of my study it is my conv1·ction that Grace is the heart of the Gospel - and that with all the talk about Ecumenical Christianity today, I believe it will be hopeless to strive for one great "World Church" unless there is first an agreement and unity about the Theology of Grace, which is the foundation-stone of all Theology.

The Lutheran Army Chaplain, Walther A. Huchthausen Oct 1947

The Lutheran Army Chaplain, Walther A. Huchthausen

Bachelor of Divinity

To describe adequately the Lutheran Army chaplain is a little more difficult. Although all the material mentioned would apply to him in a general way, other factors need to be brought into the picture which are not given expression in any of the literature that has been produced about the chaplain and his work. The doctrinal position of our Church, its polity, its missionary character, and its devotion to the Holy Scriptures as the only norm of doctrine and rule of life are all matters which affect the status of the Lutheran Army chaplain, emphasize his need, and tend to …

The Relations Between The English And The Scottish Reformations, Carl Napier Jr Jun 1947

The Relations Between The English And The Scottish Reformations, Carl Napier Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the writer's original investigation was to find out what influences and connections existed between the two Reformations. The purpose of this study is to show that before Henry VIII English efforts at union were almost wholly political. At least there is no mention of religious-political parties. War and conciliation were the diplomatic weapons. After Henry's break with the Pope by the Act of Supremacy in 1534 and to 1707 when the final union of the crowns took place political and religious relations became closely entwined. Henry and his successors, particularly Elizabeth, used religion in fostering the political …

An Evaluation Of The Nineteeth Century English Hymn Tune For American Lutheran Worship, Elmer N. Witt May 1947

An Evaluation Of The Nineteeth Century English Hymn Tune For American Lutheran Worship, Elmer N. Witt

Bachelor of Divinity

Lutheran hymnals continue to increase in size and in choice of hymn tunes. A brief study of The Lutheran Hymnal (1941) of the Missouri Synod shows that the composers of the 380 tunes of the hymnal come in the main from three countries: 18 from America, 59 from England, and 58 from Germany. This trend is borne out in the other Lutheran hymnals published in America during the first 40 years of this century, to perhaps an even more marked degree. If so many of these tunes are coming into the Lutheran Services from extra-Lutheran sources, we also do well …

Native Christian Movements In The Philippine Islands, Arnold Strohschein May 1947

Native Christian Movements In The Philippine Islands, Arnold Strohschein

Bachelor of Divinity

The story of the Independent Filipino Church is actually the story of one man, Bishop Gregorio Aglipay. It was this man who led the Filipino masses in a break from Rome to get up a truly Filipino national Church, a Church that a Filipino would be proud to claim as his own a church organized end conducted altogether by Filipino people. Therefore, it is necessary that we go into the life and background or this prominent man, Gregorio Aglipay, that we might learn what prompted him to lead his people in a revolt against Rome.

Christian Citizenship, Valentine J. Mack May 1947

Christian Citizenship, Valentine J. Mack

Bachelor of Divinity

"The Christian's life in this world is not lived in separate compartments, the spiritual and the temporal. It is one life, the life of a child of God, and in all the various situations and relationships in which the Christian finds himself he is motivated and governed by those principles which have been implanted in him in his regeneration and which are nurtured and developed by the means of grace. It is impossible, therefore, to separate his life as a Christian from his life as a citizen; in his relation to the state, the nation, and the government the Christian …

Lutheran Sola Fide Vs Roman Catholic Ex Opere Operato Of The Basis Of The Confessions, John G. Deterding May 1947

Lutheran Sola Fide Vs Roman Catholic Ex Opere Operato Of The Basis Of The Confessions, John G. Deterding

Bachelor of Divinity

Opposed to the sola fide is the doctrine of ex opere operato, i.e., that the sacraments mechanically confer grace upon all who receive them. Faith is not necessary to receive this grace, but the mere outward ceremony effects it mechanically for all those who do not place an obstacle in the way.

Nicolas Of Cusa His Life And Thought, Paul M. Riedel May 1947

Nicolas Of Cusa His Life And Thought, Paul M. Riedel

Bachelor of Divinity

Most interesting to the present writer were Cusa’s mysticism and his universalist approach to Christian truth and values. A mystic, he, nevertheless, strove to communicate his insight rationally. Though a sincere reformer, he remained a loyal adherent of the Roman church.

An Examination Of The Premises Of Wesley's Doctrine Of Christian Perfection, Anthony S. Gedwillo May 1947

An Examination Of The Premises Of Wesley's Doctrine Of Christian Perfection, Anthony S. Gedwillo

Bachelor of Divinity

For the past two centuries theologians have discussed the pros and cons of Wesley's doctrine of Christian perfection. Many have voiced their opinions in favor of it, maintaining that this high ethical ideal is certainly to be supported because there is the possibility of attainment; others have discredited it most severely by contending that such a Christian goal was not possible in this world, in this life, so long as the flesh of man was united with the soul of man.

An Examination Of The Worship Of Mary Of Guadalupe, Martin Luther Frenk May 1947

An Examination Of The Worship Of Mary Of Guadalupe, Martin Luther Frenk

Bachelor of Divinity

The Trinity of the Bible is fast becoming the Quadrinity in the Catholic Church. Mariolatry, or the worship of Mary, has become a chief characteristic of the Roman Church in our day. The doctrine of Mary’s cooperation in salvation is far more developed and emphasized today than in the days of Martin Luther.

The "Euaggelion" According To St Paul, Luther Meinzen May 1947

The "Euaggelion" According To St Paul, Luther Meinzen

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The supremacy of the Ε’υαδδε’λιον has not lost an iota of its importance to man, although centuries separate us from Paul. Despite attempts through the ages to destroy the Ε’υαδδε’λιον or to change it, it is still the power of God unto salvation that it always was. Controversies that have been waged over it have largely been the result of misunderstandings of the Ε’υαδδε’λιον. Therefore a study of this basic concept of Christianity and of theology of Paul is purposeful. It is the aim of this thesis to present the correct understanding of the term and to develop its implications.

The Life And Work Of Georg Ernest Christian Ferdinand Sievers, August Sueflow May 1947

The Life And Work Of Georg Ernest Christian Ferdinand Sievers, August Sueflow

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the purpose of this paper to find out by what process or development the Missouri Synod began to do its work among people of other tongues. When one pages through the old issues of the Lutheraner or Synodal Berichte, he certainly is not swept away by the wave of enthusiasm that the members of Synod expressed in favor of doing mission work.

An Historical Survey Of Liturgical Vestments For Clergy And Sanctuary With Final Reference To Good Lutheran Usage, Harry Krieger May 1947

An Historical Survey Of Liturgical Vestments For Clergy And Sanctuary With Final Reference To Good Lutheran Usage, Harry Krieger

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In other cases unfortunately, the Liturgical trend has produced no improvement, but quite the opposite. Individuals and groups have been swept along by it, to be sure, but have adopted much that is questionable, if not thoroughly repugnant, because they were impressed with the novelty of the thing adopted, or because it was supposed to be an improvement. As a case in point we mention the imprimatur which a large Lutheran body in America recently placed upon the wearing of a colored stole over an academic robe or so-called Genenva gown, in violation both of liturgical principles and historic practice. …

The Impact Of The Church On The State In Lutheran And Calvinistic Theology, Roland Lemke May 1947

The Impact Of The Church On The State In Lutheran And Calvinistic Theology, Roland Lemke

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In a study and comparison of Lutheran and Calvinistic theology one finds a considerable difference in points of emphasis. Calvinism especially stresses the sovereignty of God, and this special emphasis colors its entire system of theology. In Lutheran theology, on the other hand, one finds the grace of God through Christ striking a more dominant note.

An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Preaching For The Purpose Of Teaching Christian Doctrine, Martin Brauer May 1947

An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Preaching For The Purpose Of Teaching Christian Doctrine, Martin Brauer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is "An Investigation of the Effectiveness of Preaching for the Purpose of Teaching Christian Doctrine." By Christian Doctrine we mean everything that the Bible tells us about God, His nature, His work and His attitude toward man, and everything that the Bible tells us about the origin, purpose, and destiny of man, his nature, and his relationship to God. Men and God are the great theme of Scripture. Everything that the Bible says can some way or another be fitted under this theme.

Evidence From Papyrus 46 For The Early Existence Of The So-Called Western Text With Special Reference To The Epistle Of St Paul To The Ephesians, Robert E. Plagens

Bachelor of Divinity

The aim of this paper is to study the text of Papyrus 46 and to compare it with other texts, especially the Western. I make no claim that the results of this study are final nor have I investigated all of P46. I have limited myself to the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians.

A Criticism Of Religious Implications In The Writings Of Aldous Huxley, Richard Luecke May 1947

A Criticism Of Religious Implications In The Writings Of Aldous Huxley, Richard Luecke

Bachelor of Divinity

The controlling purpose of this study is to criticise the religious content and implications in Huxley's writings. The nature of the problem is more practical than theological or philosophical, bringing the Christian point of reference to bear on this man’s writings and endeavoring to come up with a Christian attitude toward the man.

Religion And The Adolescent Personality, Robert E. Meier May 1947

Religion And The Adolescent Personality, Robert E. Meier

Bachelor of Divinity

In an attempt to gain a clearer picture of adolescent personality, psychologists and psychoanalists, counselors and pastors have concerned themselves very much with this problem. Adolescence is a culmination of many things that have gone before, and its effects will continue in later life. Adolescence is not a life by itself, but a stage in a total life! Therefore, the events and happenings of adolescence cannot be cut off from the total life.

The Attitude Toward The Confessions Among The Lutherans In The United States From 1800 To 1867, Paul Frederick Maassel May 1947

The Attitude Toward The Confessions Among The Lutherans In The United States From 1800 To 1867, Paul Frederick Maassel

Bachelor of Divinity

In the past few years, there have been many discussions concerning Lutheran union. Very often the backgrounds play an important part in understanding some of the problems in connection with Lutheran union. In this paper no attempt is made to connect the past with the present, as space is limited. An attempt is made to show some of the causes for the attitude toward the Confessions of the Lutheran Church which prevailed between 1800 and 1867.

An Examination Of The Teachings Of Faith-Healers, Walter F. Fisher May 1947

An Examination Of The Teachings Of Faith-Healers, Walter F. Fisher

Bachelor of Divinity

The basis of faith by which, cures are effected lies in the faith healer in whom the patient has confidence, or in one’s own faith in supposed Scriptural promises of healing. We shall confine the discussion of this paper to the teachings of those modern American teachers who hold what we shall call the direct faith healing principle.

The Concept Of Reward In The New Testament, Wilbur May May 1947

The Concept Of Reward In The New Testament, Wilbur May

Bachelor of Divinity

As the title implies, the subject of this thesis is the concept of reward as it is presented in the New Testament. However, it will be advisable to limit this subject so that each part may be discussed in a thesis. Because of the lack of space, we shall immediately eliminate two phases of this subject which might possibly be included under the concept of reward.

After having eliminated these two phases of reward, there are still those rewards which the Christian receives for performing good works which are pleasing to God. It is with this reward that we are …

The Early History Of The Aramaeans And Their Contacts With Israel Up To The Divided Kingdom, Marlin A. Mentz May 1947

The Early History Of The Aramaeans And Their Contacts With Israel Up To The Divided Kingdom, Marlin A. Mentz

Bachelor of Divinity

Of the Old Testament races and peoples, who had contacts with God's chosen people, the Aramaeans, or as the English Bible terms them, Syrians, are one or the most colorful and fascinating. This is especially true because the history and career of the Aramaean people runs nearly parallel with that of the Israelites. They both appear on the scene at approximately the same time, and the history of both Aram and Israel also terminates about the same time.

The Concepts Of Pistis And Elpis And, Agapee In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Karl L. Barth May 1947

The Concepts Of Pistis And Elpis And, Agapee In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Karl L. Barth

Bachelor of Divinity

We shall not attempt to solve the problem of authorship, nor, will the content and purpose of the epistle be treated beyond their relation to pistis, elpis, and agapee. Our problem is to determine: 1. what these words mean in the various passages in which they are used; 2. the role that these concepts play where they are present merely by implication. e. g., "tha abiding city" as part of the hope concept; 3. their relation to one another.

The Hussites And Their Work Of Reformation In Slovakia, Daniel Michael Estok May 1947

The Hussites And Their Work Of Reformation In Slovakia, Daniel Michael Estok

Bachelor of Divinity

In the middle of the fourteenth century central Europe was ripe for a reformation movement. a re-formation of the Church of the day. In consequence of the shameful debasement of the papacy and the deep corruption of the clergy and monks, the influence of the Church upon the moral and religious culture of the people, in spite of the ardent zeal of the homilists and catechists, was upon the whole much less than formerly. Reverence for the Church as it stood was indeed tottering, but was not yet completely overthrown.

The Doctrine Of Salvation According To The Minor Prophets, W W. Bentrup May 1947

The Doctrine Of Salvation According To The Minor Prophets, W W. Bentrup

Bachelor of Divinity

A complete and thorough study of the doctrine of salvation presented in the Old Testament is beyond the scope of a Bachelor of Divinity thesis. Several factors made it advisable to restrict the research to the Minor Prophets. Nevertheless, to complete the picture, a brief survey of what the Old Testament has to say on the subject of salvation is naturally in place in order to supply the necessary background for the thesis.

The Injunctons Of Scripture For A Well -Balanced Personality, Carl T. Geist May 1947

The Injunctons Of Scripture For A Well -Balanced Personality, Carl T. Geist

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to show the power and aid that the Bible and Christianity can extend to mental and physical problems.

Matthew's Method Of Quoting The Old Testament, Lorenz Otto Nieting May 1947

Matthew's Method Of Quoting The Old Testament, Lorenz Otto Nieting

Bachelor of Divinity

In examining Matthew’s use of the Old Testament, we are immediately confronted by the problem of the language that he uses in quoting the Old Testament. The problem simply stated is to find out whether Matthew used the Hebrew, the Septuagint, an Aramaic version, or extant Greek version of the Old Testament: or if he used a number of these versions. In the case of the latter we shall try to determine under what circumstances Matthew used the one or the other version.
