Christian-Jewish Relations: Theological Issues, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.

Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.

The major disagreements between Jews and traditional Christians (i.e. those who accept the canon of the New Testament and the theological decisions of the first seven ecumenical Councils) focus on the mystery of God and the person of the Messiah. The antithetical approaches to the questions of three persons in one God and the person of the Messiah, believed by Christians to be Jesus of Nazareth, true God and true man, will not be set aside; however, clarification of the Catholic understanding regarding the Jewish stance can remove generalized accusations of blindness and/or malice. This article examine the key passages …

The Religious Other As Neighbor, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.

Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.

Many stories are told about antagonism between Christians and Jews, especially in countries with a large Jewish minority. Jewish Perspective, Asher Finkel Ph.D. Nov 2005

Jewish Perspective, Asher Finkel Ph.D.

Rabbi Asher Finkel, Ph.D.

Almost two millennia of confrontation, vilification and recrimination marked the relationship of the offspring Christianity and its mother religion, Judaism from the first century. Now, a new chapter of the encounter has opened since Vatican II with a papal declaration on the relation of the Church to Judaism and to non-Christian religions. A meaningful dialogue of mutual respect was pursued that led to the apologetic reconciliation and positive reorientation to the common Biblical tradition of Jews and Christians. The encounter has now changed from past relationship of disputation and intolerance to seeking understanding from the ground of faith in canonical …

Mary And The Biblical Heritage Jan 1995

Mary And The Biblical Heritage

Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.

Throughout the ages, the Church and her teachers often acknowledged that the fourfold Gospel offers only a limited number of passages that feature the Mother of Jesus. Undaunted, the great doctors of the early Church and the theologians of the Middle Ages found abundant resources for their meditation concerning Mary in the Jewish Scriptures and literature related to the New Testament. The theological premise that God is the principal author of the entire Bible led them to find hints and images of the Messiah everywhere. Recognizing that the link of Jesus to the people of Israel is Mary, his Mother, …
