Psalm Singing And The Mission Of The Church, Wendell Kimbrough Jan 2020

Psalm Singing And The Mission Of The Church, Wendell Kimbrough

Symposium on Worship Archive

Why sing psalms? Does it matter how we sing them? For many, psalm singing is a nice idea (because they’re in the Bible), but not essential to the mission of the church. In this workshop, songwriter and worship artist Wendell Kimbrough will share from personal experience and biblical conviction why he believes the church cannot thrive without singing psalms. He’ll share the vision that informs his work as a songwriter and how he’s connected the dots between the Great Commission, emotional wholeness, and the challenge of the psalms. We’ll spend time singing and have a lively conversation.

Children's Books About Worship, Kristen Verhulst, Maria Eugenia Cornou Phd, Joel Schoon-Tanis

Symposium on Worship Archive

There are a number of wonderful children’s books that help church school leaders, educators, parents, and grandparents teach children about worship. These books focus on the sacraments, the Christian year, the psalms, and prayer. Children’s books provide another means to welcome and engage children (and adults!) in worship as full members of the body of Christ. At the beginning of this session hear from the coauthor and illustrator of the new children’s book En la escuela de los Salmos/At Psalms School.

Remarkably, even since the publication of Psalms for All Seasons just a few years ago, over 30 new Psalm-based songwriting and recording projects have emerged from a variety of contemporary worship leaders across North America and beyond. While some of these settings are designed for solo voices, many are well-suited to congregational use, and are worthy heirs to the legacy of congregation-based Psalms re-established by Luther and Calvin. Come to explore a variety of examples of this music, as well as the stories behind the songs. In addition, to consider new songs you might use in your context, come ready …

Sing To The Lord A New Song: John Calvin And The Spiritual Discipline Of Metrical Psalmody, Brandon J. Bellanti

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

The purpose of this essay is to evaluate the way that psalmody - specifically metrical psalmody - serves as a sort of spiritual discipline. In other words, this essay seeks to demonstrate how the singing of psalms can be a tool to aid in spiritual growth. Much of the research for this essay focuses on the theological writings of the Protestant reformer John Calvin, as well as the way in which he incorporated metrical psalmody into his liturgical framework. The research also comprises primary writings from Aristotle, Plato, Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Basil, and Saint Augustine - all of whom …

Re-Tuning The Lyre, Karen Campbell

Symposium on Worship Archive

Psalms have been part of personal and public worship in Ireland since the times of St. Patrick. Yet, today some react against the tradition of metrical psalm singing. The Worship Panel of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland was tasked to examine, revise and refresh the use of psalms in corporate worship. This workshop will demonstrate some newer Irish psalm settings for worship and suggest ways for creative use of the Psalms in worship so that the next generation will come to know God, ‘even the children yet to be born so that they in turn will tell their children’ (Psalm …

Creative Ideas For Using The Psalms With People With Intellectual Disabilities, Joyce Borger, Nella Uitvlugt Jan 2011

Creative Ideas For Using The Psalms With People With Intellectual Disabilities, Joyce Borger, Nella Uitvlugt

Symposium on Worship Archive

The psalms are the prayer book for all Christians and have as much to say to the person with the Ph.D. as the person with intellectual disabilities. The psalms give voice to both the praise and lament of all God’s children. In this session we will look at ways to assist people with intellectual disabilities to enter into the psalms and make them their own, using a multisensory method of music, drama, and visual ideas. This study of Psalms has a broad use within the Christian community.
