Emma Adapted: Jane Austen’S Heroine From Book To Film, Marc Dipaolo Jul 2007

Emma Adapted: Jane Austen’S Heroine From Book To Film, Marc Dipaolo

Faculty Books & Book Chapters

"This work of literary and film criticism examines all eight filmed adaptations of Jane Austen’s Emma produced between 1948 and 1996 as vastly different interpretations of the source novel. Instead of condemning the movies and television specials as being «not as good as the book,» Marc DiPaolo considers how each adaptation might be understood as a valid «reading» of Austen’s text. For example, he demonstrates how the Gwyneth Paltrow film Emma is both a romance and a female coming-of-age story, the 1972 BBC miniseries dramatizes Emma’s world as claustrophobic and Emma herself as suffering from depression, and the modern-day teen …

Rajasthan: Mirabai And Her Poetry, Nancy M. Martin Jun 2007

Rajasthan: Mirabai And Her Poetry, Nancy M. Martin

Religious Studies Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Mirabai (born c. 1500) is among the most well-known and loved of the Hindu women saints devoted to Krishna. Her devotion to her Lord is absolute, as her life and songs attest. Her story is a romantic tale of star-crossed lovers—one human, the other divine—marked by perseverance and triumph in the midst of great suffering. Songs sung in her name speak of the joys and trials of the devotional life and evoke the full range of romantic love, from the devastating longing that marks separated lovers and the blazing anger of a woman betrayed to the sweet and intoxicating pleasures …

First Freedom: The Baptist Perspective On Religious Liberty, Thomas White, Jason G. Duesing, Malcolm B. Yarnell

Faculty Books

First Freedom is an important gathering of messages from a recent conference on religious liberty held at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Editor Jason B. Duesing explains:

"The purpose of this collection is, first, to provide an introductory look into the biblical and historical foundations of religious liberty combined with several instances of contemporary expression and defense for the purpose of instruction, edification, and encouragement to all who take the time to read this volume. Second, however, we wish to remind Baptists in the twenty-first century of the price that was paid by their forefathers for the establishment and defense of …

The Aids Orphan Crisis In Kenya: Caring For Kikuyu Children In Escarpment, Patrick Gitau Kihiu Apr 2007

The Aids Orphan Crisis In Kenya: Caring For Kikuyu Children In Escarpment, Patrick Gitau Kihiu

ATS Dissertations

The HIV/AIDS pandemic has continued to ravage many populations in the world. Sub-Saharan Africa has become the home of millions of HIV/AIDS orphans and the numbers continue to grow. A major repercussion of the pandemic is that the traditional extended family network within this African context has been overwhelmed. Many of the AIDS orphans are now cared for by elderly grandparents. This study shows how the Kikuyu tribal system is supposed to work in providing care for its orphans. The study examines how some of the contemporary factors, particularly the spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, have affected this tribal system. …

Missional Experiential Education For Developing Christian Global Citizens, David E. Fenrick Mar 2007

Missional Experiential Education For Developing Christian Global Citizens, David E. Fenrick

ATS Dissertations

At the start of the 21st century, Christian educators are faced with the challenge of equipping Christian disciples for participation in God's present mission in the world, a worldthatisinthemidstofradicalchangeduetotheforcesofglobalization. Christians around the world, most of whom will never have the opportunity to participate in formal ministerial education, are being called upon to demonstrate a missional multicultural witnessandgloballevelofcitizenshipinthecommunitieswheretheylive. Giventhis reality, Christian education at every level needs to discover a pedagogical process for preparing all Christians for missionary vocations that address the emerging missiological realities ofthe 21st century.

Good News To The Poor: A Model For Holistic Ministry In Bunyore, Kenya, Moses Alela Mar 2007

Good News To The Poor: A Model For Holistic Ministry In Bunyore, Kenya, Moses Alela

ATS Dissertations

This study details a model for holistic Christian ministry which can be adopted by churches to help alleviate extreme poverty in Bunyore, Kenya. The model presented here is faithful to biblical truth and culturally relevant. If well implemented, the model can help Christians in Bunyore meet both their spiritual and physical needs, thereby demonstrating that Good News is indeed good to those in extreme poverty. The model has a spiritual element which makes it Holistic Christian Transformational Development (as it is termed here). This model stands in distinction from other models introduced by secular bodies which lack this spiritual element, …
