Four Fundamental Factors In The Instability Of The American Home, Harold Joseph Miller
Four Fundamental Factors In The Instability Of The American Home, Harold Joseph Miller
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The family may be defined as a group of interacting personalities of neer tie or blood-kin; namely, husband, wife, children, and may include grand parents. The origin of the family is not clear, since we find marriage in a rather highly developed form among the most primitive tribes. The family has taken on different forms in various places and under varying circumstances. Perhaps monogamy, the union of one man and one woman, is the most prevalent fore of marriage, not only in the United States but among all peoples and in all ages. Polygyny, the union of one man with several …
The Word Tsedeq In Deutero Isaiah, Kenneth Ward Jones
The Word Tsedeq In Deutero Isaiah, Kenneth Ward Jones
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It is the purpose of this study to examine the semantic variations adhering to the word tsedeq in Isaiah 40-55 (Deutero Isaiah). It is our thesis that the word tsedeg does not contain an essential meaning which can be ascertained apart from its contextual referents. The word tsedeq is not invested by the author of chs. 40-55 with a semantic distinctiveness that is primarily oriented to an explicit theological reality. We do not believe, for example, that tsedeq attains “the status of the key to the understanding of the whole diving work of salvation.” The bestowal of such a “status” …

Abraham Maslow's Concept Of Self Actualizaton As Illustrated In The Life Of Jesus, Peter Minh Quang Chu
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
How to be authentic to the self is possibly the main goal of all human efforts. Self-actualization is an urgent and important problem because it is the last stage in shaping a man's personality. In self-actualization, a person becomes more fully developed, more fully mature, indeed, a more complete person by fully actualizing his potentialities. In self actualization, the person lives what he potentially and really is.

The Unity Of Biblical Man, Elizabeth Foxley
The Unity Of Biblical Man, Elizabeth Foxley
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Various religious ideas are expressed in both the Old and the New Testament. Although these ideas do not express a single theology within the Biblical literature, some basic ideas do reoccur. Among these are notions about man, his relationship to God and to society. These concepts of man and his relationships may be brought together to form a composite "man" which might be referred to as Biblical Man. There are contemporary views of Biblical Man which may not in fact be Biblical. Such a view is the notion that man is formed of two or three {listinct parts: body and …

A Comparative Investigation Of The Differing Responses To The Good News Of The Gospel Among The Highland And Jungle Quechua Indians Of Ecuador, William Richard Lemon
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Why does the Good News of the Gospel find greater response in some areas of the world than it does in other areas - even where there is a fairly close relationship geographically and culturally? This is one of the problems that the evangelical church is facing in some areas of Ecuador today. After many years of labor in some areas there has been little fruit, while in others there has been an abundant harvest - even to the amazement of some of the missionaries involved. It is the purpose of this project and report to investigate this paradox to …

Sacrificial Worship In Ancient Israel And Its Fulfillment In Jesus Christ, Samuel Richard Baglien
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
During recent years, there has been a renewed interest in the study of the historical and religious values of the Old Testament. Christians everywhere seem to have become obsessed with an inherent thirst for a better understanding of this great book and the faith it teaches. This renewed desire to probe into the rich background of Semitic culture that is the very historical foundation of Christianity seems to have been brought about by two distinct and quite general conditions.
The first and most obvious condition is the age in which we are living--the age of science. Today, this age is …

Religion As A Factor In The Defeat Of Alfred E. Smith In The Election Of 1928, Ronald Eugene Isetti
Religion As A Factor In The Defeat Of Alfred E. Smith In The Election Of 1928, Ronald Eugene Isetti
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The growing patriotism of the Catholic population, the Church's vigorous support of the “Social Gospel,” and the accommodation of Catholics to American democratic institutions -- all of these factors helped to make the Church of Rome more acceptable to the majority of Americans. Nonetheless, there was still a considerable amount of latent anti-Catholic feeling in the country, especially in the South. Therefore, when Alfred E. Smith, a Catholic, became the Democratic presidential candidate in 1928, animosity towards the Catholic Church, which hitherto had been submerged, came to the surface during the campaign.
Some people, especially Catholics, went so far as …

Dogen And Bankei And A Study Of The Soto Zen, Kazumitsu W. Kato
Dogen And Bankei And A Study Of The Soto Zen, Kazumitsu W. Kato
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The reason I am writing this dissertation is to introduce another side of Zen, Soto, which is completely unknown in the Western world; and at the same time to bring Dogen's teaching to the attention of Western scholars, since it is famous in Japan as the most profound branch of the philosophy of Zen. Unfortunately, none of Dogen' s teaching has yet been translated into English except Masunaga's private publication given above. Therefore I am taking this opportunity to translate and to add a commentary of my own for the better understanding of Dogen as well as the historical survey …

Dialectic As A Philosophical Method, Pierre Grimes
Dialectic As A Philosophical Method, Pierre Grimes
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Philosophy is the quest for wisdom and hence it may share a common end with religion. Not all philosophies are, however, concerned with this end, nor, again are all religions involved with a quest for wisdom. There may be different techniques and tools employed in the accomplishment of wisdom, but this dissertation is concerned only with the study of the nature and use of reason. In the philosophy of Plato reason is employed in diverse fields including mathematics, myths, and elaborate analogies, but when he turns to reason itself, then it becomes important to this analysis. Reason may be utilized …
Conceptions Of Formative Processes In Western Science And Eastern Philosophy, Glenn E. Kaufmann
Conceptions Of Formative Processes In Western Science And Eastern Philosophy, Glenn E. Kaufmann
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The central theme of this paper concerns the way Eastern and Western (sometimes termed Oriental and Occidental) thought view the formation of the world; the means of arriving at these conclusions and the concepts or pre-conceived ideas upon which they are based. Western thought has been limited to views that have developed out of modern science, post-1500; they are mechanistic science, evolution, Whitehead's philosophy pertaining to God and modern physics. For the purpose of this paper, the emphasis in Eastern thought is placed on Mahayana Buddhism, especially the Madhyamika school of philosophy. In India it developed in contact with many …

The Concept Of Brahmacarya, Evelyn Vrat
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Contemporary civilization of the western world represents a combination of material development and moral degeneration, Value is measured in 'space' not in 'spirit'. Antecedent to the complications of life with its sufferings) 'fiddlers fees' and disillusionments, how very few realize that true pleasure is not in having, but in being? Fewer still are those whose feelings, thoughts and actions are conscious, aware, self-chosen and self-directed. More often than not, introspection reveals that most are not masters, but the mastered, victims of moods and conflicts...
However, deep dissatisfaction with life as it appears to be and with the individual's adaption to …

A Relationship Between Eastern Thought And Western Psychotherapy : An Application Of Taoism And Zen To Client-Centered Therapy, Lloyd Saxton
A Relationship Between Eastern Thought And Western Psychotherapy : An Application Of Taoism And Zen To Client-Centered Therapy, Lloyd Saxton
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This paper does not purport to be an examination of Zen or Taoism, but rather a view of certain aspects of Zen and Taoism, but rather a view of certain aspects of Zen and Taoism from the vantage point of contemporary psychology, to see if a metaphysic, a philosophical resting-place, might not be found for the admittedly pragmatic science of clinical psychology.
The questions the paper asks, then, and attempts to answer, are (1) can such a formulation be made, and (2) does psychotherapy conducted from this point of view move satisfactorily.
