The unique and productive relationship that Brigham Young University and the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies have enjoyed for nearly fifteen years has recently been elevated to a new level of cooperation. While FARMS continues to be an independently managed and independently funded foundation, the BYU Board of Trustees has now endorsed a protocol between BYU and FARMS that expands the range of opportunities for cooperation on scholarly work on the Book of Mormon and related topics.

In July members of the international team of scholars working on the Dead Sea Scrolls held a conference in Provo to discuss the progress of their research and to examine new technologies that may assist them. The conference was hosted by the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS) and Brigham Young University. It was organized and chaired by Eugene Ulrich of the University of Notre Dame and Donald W. Parry of Brigham Young University.

Each year FARMS grants fellowships to promising graduate students who are working in fields of interest to FARMS, in the name of Hugh Nibley. Interested students should submit transcripts, curriculum vitae, and letters of recommendation to M. Gerald Bradford at the FARMS office. As a result of changes in the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies and of findings from an in-depth membership survey that FARMS conducted earlier this year, FARMS members will now see a change in their benefits package. Formerly, for a $12 annual fee, members received six issues of the INSIGHTS newsletter. Just over two years ago, FARMS began publishing books on its own rather than in partnership with other publishers. In part that decision was made in order to give FARMS more editorial control over its publications. We also wanted to try to reach a broader audience by marketing our books ourselves, in the hopes that focusing solely on distributing our own books might be a more effective way to reach more people than getting lost in the larger marketing efforts of a larger company (the jury is still out on that issue).
