Imagery, Prayer, And Mind Wandering: Kataphatic Prayer, Martha M. O. Duah Dec 2015

Imagery, Prayer, And Mind Wandering: Kataphatic Prayer, Martha M. O. Duah

Honors Theses

Mind wandering—reduced attention to external events—during prayer could pose a problem for Christians. However, different types of prayer make different cognitive demands. Kataphatic prayer, a common type of evangelical Christian prayer, makes use of mental imagery in hopes of experiencing God in a richer sense. Because both mind wandering and kataphatic prayer require imagery, tying up imagery resources in kataphatic prayer should block mind wandering thereby improving focus. Participants in this study prayed as they normally do, viewed a visual task, or engaged in kataphatic prayer while self-monitoring for mind wandering.

A Basis Of The Civil War: The Theological Views Of Nineteenth Century Christians On The Justification Of Slavery, Shaniqua Janeè Wells May 2015

A Basis Of The Civil War: The Theological Views Of Nineteenth Century Christians On The Justification Of Slavery, Shaniqua Janeè Wells

Honors Theses

Views on the morality of slavery have produced a paradox within the Christian community. Historically, the issue of slavery has been analyzed tremendously by means of economic and cultural factors. The religious analysis of the institution of slavery has been overshadowed by secular motives. This paradox on the morality of slavery causes disunity within the Christian faith. Christianity, as a monotheistic religion, emphasizes the purpose that one God has for His people. Therefore, the multiplicity of views on God’s intentions for the treatment of human beings cannot be allowed in the Christian community. The abolitionists’ and activist’s views must be …

Story-Based Spiritual Formation For College Students, Anna Sikes Apr 2015

Story-Based Spiritual Formation For College Students, Anna Sikes

Honors Theses

The typical way that spiritual formation of college students is approached tends to be therapeutic instead of centered around God's big story. I believe the current approaches to spiritual growth do not adequately meet the needs of today's emerging adults because they are self-centered and simplistic. College is a time when those who want to grow can if they are placed in intentional, story-based process that allows them to realize their part in God's grand story. This becomes a way for those who are on a search for deep, authentic faith to find out how to grow. As a college …

Effects Of Modern History On Welsh Theology Post-1904, Hannah Diaz Jan 2015

Effects Of Modern History On Welsh Theology Post-1904, Hannah Diaz

Honors Theses

The Welsh Revival of 1904 transformed the Welsh Church interdenominationally for an entire generation; however, the church has since been affected by global and local events, causing it to stray from conservative evangelical theology, and largely fragmenting believers between traditional and charismatic leanings. The principles of Welsh theology have been little studied since the revival other than isolated segments focusing on sermons, journals, or biographies of revival leaders. The Welsh Revival has become recognized as a definitive event in Welsh history but little work has actually been done to trace the effects of it until present day. This research merging …

Jesus Broke Down The Wall: A Study On The Potential Impact Of Student Religious Organizations On Racial Reconciliation Efforts At The University Of Mississippi, Emilie J. Street Jan 2015

Jesus Broke Down The Wall: A Study On The Potential Impact Of Student Religious Organizations On Racial Reconciliation Efforts At The University Of Mississippi, Emilie J. Street

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential impact of student religious organizations at the University of Mississippi on racial reconciliation efforts on campus. Since 2009, the university has dealt with numerous racialized events that have resulted in a culture of resentment. Additionally, student religious organizations at the university attract a large number of students, and in many ways, serve as a significant influence on campus culture; however, this study demonstrates that they rarely take action to combat these incidents, which are often perceived as racially insensitive, or the culture that cultivates them. Findings of the study also …

Content And Character: Modeling Christian Communication After Jesus' Sermon On The Mount, Sophie Demuth Jan 2015

Content And Character: Modeling Christian Communication After Jesus' Sermon On The Mount, Sophie Demuth

Honors Theses

In order to learn about Jesus’ communication method, I decided to study the Sermon on the Mount. After doing an in-depth study of Jesus’ method (how he taught, the devices he used, and his structure), I realized his method is only a part of his effectiveness as a speaker. Without credibility and integrity as well, Jesus’ teaching would fall flat and cease to have authority. This realization especially struck me because, in the field of communications, method is emphasized over integrity and character. I decided to compare Jesus’ method and character with what the communication field teaches about public speaking. …

Dissolving The Conflict: Why The Church Should Be More Open To Evolution, Kyle Hargis Jan 2015

Dissolving The Conflict: Why The Church Should Be More Open To Evolution, Kyle Hargis

Honors Theses

Evolution can be very controversial, but I don't think that this needs to be the case. Having grown up in the south, in a Southern Baptist Church, I saw that evolution was always viewed as anti-theistic and treated like a trick from the devil. Many of the people that I went to church with believed that the world was only six thousand years old and would defend that opinion wholeheartedly, but my parents taught us that the world was very old. They were not strictly evolutionists but they believed that it very well could have happened if God chose to …

The Cost Of Being A Summer Camp Counselor, Emily Payne Jan 2015

The Cost Of Being A Summer Camp Counselor, Emily Payne

Honors Theses

Every morning I wake up thinking, “I’m one day closer to camp.” As I write this there are 81 days till I return for my fourth summer as a counselor at Camp War Eagle in Rogers, Arkansas and that statement has never been truer. I look forward to working at camp each summer like a child looks forward to Christmas morning. Each year I have to complete an application which contains the question, “Why do you want to return to Camp War Eagle?” And every year I am struck by the excellence of that question. What is it about the …
