Whose Millennium? Religion, Sexuality, and the Values of Citizenship was an interdisciplinary discussion where numerous borders were fruitfully troubled—the borders that lie between the academic and the activist, between religious traditions, between different analytic approaches, between those who exercise their resourcefulness and resistance inside religious communities and those who apply pressure and critique from without.

The question that I am left with from the extraordinary presentations over the conference's two days borrows from Rabbi Steve Greenberg's and Ludger Viefhues's discussion of the multiple images of the biblical "Sodom". Conventionally Sodom has signified a place of sexual deviance or, conversely, sexual censorship. But as Greenberg pointed out, in many traditional commentaries on the story of the condemnation of Sodom, the issue was not that the townspeople were engaged in forbidden sexual practices, but that they were violent and hostile to those in need of shelter and food.

On April 13th and 14th, CLAGS hosts a major national conference on the theme Whose Millennium?: Religion, Sexuality, and the Values of Citizenship. The conference is being generously supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, in conjunction with CLAGS's Rockefeller Residency in the Humanities program.
