The Restoration Movement originated on the American frontier in a period of religious enthusiasm and ferment at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The first leaders of the movement deplored the numerous divisions in the church and urged the unity of all Christians through a restoration of New Testament Christianity. The Protestant Reformation had gone astray, they felt, and the various denominations must be directed back to primitive Christianity. The sermon that composes this tract was delivered by Jesse P. Sewell over radio broadcasting station WRR from the auditorium of the Pearl and Bryan Streets Church of Christ, Dallas, Texas on April 3, 1927. J.P. Sewell was president emeritus of Abilene Christian College and the regular minister of the Church of Christ in Corsicana, Texas at the time. The sermon also appeared in the Dallas News. It is a plea for a restoration of the New Testament church and loyalty to Christ and His Word.

In this memoir of his childhood in central Tennessee, missionary John Moody (J.M.) McCaleb recalls the joys and sorrows of growing up in the rural United States in the post-Civil War era. McCaleb (1861-1953) was a Churches of Christ preacher who, with his wife Dorothy, engaged in missionary work in Japan (1892-1941), before returning to the US where McCaleb taught on Eastern religions at Pepperdine College. The book (undated, but inscribed in 1919) also includes hand-drawn illustrations.

J. W. Shepherd (1861-1948) was an influential minister and author with Churches of Christ. He studied at College of the Bible in Louisville, Kentucky under J. W. McGarvey, and he was office editor of the Gospel Advocate with David Lipscomb. James A. Harding described J. W. Shepherd’s Handbook on Baptism, first published in 1894, as “by far the fullest, the best arranged, and most valuable collection of learned testimonies on the action, subjects, and design of baptism ever published in a single volume.”

Robert Richardson (1806-1876) was a close associate of Alexander Campbell and a coeditor with Campbell of the Millennial Harbinger and a professor at Campbell’s Bethany College. He was the author of the monumental two-volume Memoirs of Alexander Campbell. In Communings in the Sanctuary, Richardson gathered together 24 of his best communion talks at the Bethany Church of Christ. These meditations became a celebrated book of devotions, and J. W. McGarvey referred to these talks as “gems of beauty.”
