The Beginnings Of Jewish Missions In The Lcms, Jaron Melin
The Beginnings Of Jewish Missions In The Lcms, Jaron Melin
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
Mission is the theological account of the relationship between the church and the world. Where are the Jews in this relationship? If the church and the Jews had a relationship status on Facebook, then it might say, “It’s complicated.” This may be true of any kind of missions, but this shows itself to be especially true in Lutheran history and in particular LCMS-history. I look at the histories as recorded by Meyer, Lieske, Cohen, Parviz, and others on the early history of Jewish Missions in the LCMS, and I reflect on the context and theology behind them using missiologists like …

The Salvation Of The Household In Lukian Theology A Tool For Mission And Evangelism In The West African Church; Acts 16:25-34 As A Case Study, Jean Baptiste Mberebe
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Mberebe, Jean Baptiste. “The Salvation fo the Household in Lukan Theology: A Tool for Mission and Evangelism in the West African Church, Acts 16:25-34 as a Case Study.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2018. 251 pp.
What is the “salvation of the household” in Lukan theology? What does it mean for mission and evangelism in the West African context? These are the questions the author is attempting to answer, and in so doing he hopes to draw the attention of the reader, both in the West, and especially in Africa, on the nature of salvation-that the nature of salvation is not …
Negotiating Identity: Exploring Tensions Between Being Hakka And Being Christian In Northwestern Taiwan, Henry Rowold
Negotiating Identity: Exploring Tensions Between Being Hakka And Being Christian In Northwestern Taiwan, Henry Rowold
Concordia Journal
Christofferson speaks of the Hakka people, he prefers more malleable descriptors such as “being Hakka” or “doing things in the Hakka way.” This, in turn, expresses the frustration Christofferson felt in his own ministry, working hard for fluency in the Hakka language, but discovering that not all of the Hakka he was speaking to were as comfortable in, or even loyal to, the ancestral language.
The New Shape Of World Christianity: How American Experience Reflects Global Faith. By Mark A. Noll, Ken Chitwood
The New Shape Of World Christianity: How American Experience Reflects Global Faith. By Mark A. Noll, Ken Chitwood
Concordia Journal
Noll proposes that North American Christianity molded, and is related to, worldwide Christianity via an amalgamation of missionary influence, evangelical attitudes, and shared historical contexts.

Empowering Confident Confessor-Servant Evangelists Twenty-First-Century Multicultural Mission Work, Gregory Seltz
Concordia Journal
Amid such real tensions the church of Jesus Christ is challenged to be the body of Christ for others, to build bridges, to more boldly speak Christ’s message beyond the safety of its confessional walls.
The Missiological Significance Of The Doctrine Of Justification In The Lutheran Confessions, Klaus Schulz
The Missiological Significance Of The Doctrine Of Justification In The Lutheran Confessions, Klaus Schulz
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
Generally the Lutheran Confessions are understood in the traditional sense as the normative sources for Lutheran doctrine; in addition, they are also documents which offer valuable missiological insights. To support the latter observation the following study attempts to read the Lutheran Confessions with a heightened missiological perspective. Such a reading takes up the interests and concerns frequently raised by Lutheran theologians who in light of the increasing changes in mission see the theological integrity of Lutheran mission endangered. Consequently, they plea for a return to the Book of Concord from which guiding principles for Lutheran mission m Confessions, though, should …
The Educational Needs Of The Adult Layperson Concerning The Mission Of God_Research Towards Writing An Introductory Adult Mission Education Course, Stephen Gaulke
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
What are the educational needs of an adult layperson concerning world mission? What ought an introductory adult mission education study course attempt to teach? This thesis endeavors to answer the question in three chapters.
Chapter One articulates a concise theology of mission. Rooted in Scripture, especially the mission commands of the risen Savior, and drawing on the Apostles' Creed, The Book of Concord, and Martin Luther, Chapter One sketches the "who, what, where, when, why, and how" of God's mission.
Chapter Two surveys mission professionals to discover what they believe an introductory adult study course on world mission ought to …

The Three-Self Mission Approach In The Context Of The Igreja Evangelica Luterana Do Brasil, Egon Martim Seibert
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This thesis intends to deal with the three-self principle and the IELB. In the first chapter the historical origin and development of the three-self mission approach will be presented. The question "Are they biblical?" will be answered in the second chapter. The third chapter will focus on the Brazilian background of the IELB, with the ethnic composition of its people, its economic and social status, and its chief religions. The foundation of the IELB and the most relevant facts of its history will be discussed in the fourth chapter. Finally, the conclusion will provide an explanation of how the three-self …
Uemura Masahisa (1857-1925) First Generation Pastor, Christian Leader And Instinctive Proponent Of Indigenized Christianity In Japan, Addison Soltau
Uemura Masahisa (1857-1925) First Generation Pastor, Christian Leader And Instinctive Proponent Of Indigenized Christianity In Japan, Addison Soltau
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
Uemura was an extremely able leader and organizer of men, sophisticated thinker, broad reader, and committed to the Christian faith ashes understood it. Part of the fascination of the study lies in observing how the influence of this towering figure and others like him came so quickly to bear upon the church in Japan. Unlike other countries to which the faith has been taken by missionaries, Japan stands out as one in which missionary leadership and influence were replaced by Japanese within thirty years after its introduction. Uemura was one who helped to bring this about. The Christian church in …
The Three-Self Principle As A Model For The Indigenous Church, Peter Dorn
The Three-Self Principle As A Model For The Indigenous Church, Peter Dorn
Master of Divinity Thesis
With all of these definitions, the one that is recognized the most is still the one with which it was associated from the beginning. "In common usage, an indigenous church is defined as a church that is self-governing, self-supporting, and self-propagating."11 This Three-Self Principle is the subject of this paper. Since the development of the Three-Self Principle more than a century ago, many other "selves” have been put forward as a means to developing the indigenous church. The most current of these discussions are centering on the indigenization or contextualization of theology. These discussions are outside the realm of discussion …
The Influence Of Traditional Practices In The Church Life Of Etche People, Emmanuel Amadi
The Influence Of Traditional Practices In The Church Life Of Etche People, Emmanuel Amadi
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
All through the ages, even before the advent of Christianity, the Ibos, in general, have treasured these practices because they served their cultural and social concerns. But no sooner was Christianity introduced into the various segments of our society than conflicts upon conflicts began to erupt. The Etche man, like his relatives the Ibos, is torn between two worlds. Christianity demands that he give up his past, while his culture insists that he stick to his heritage. The Etche man today asks how these conflicting thoughts can be reconciled. In this thesis, the writer shall attempt to describe these traditional …
Were The Reformers Mission-Minded?., Thomas Coates
Were The Reformers Mission-Minded?., Thomas Coates
Concordia Theological Monthly
The subject "The Reformation and Missions" might well suggest a very short paper indeed. Both theologically and practically, the Reformation period is notable chiefly for its lack of missionary emphasis.
The Ecumenical Century And The Parish, Alvin N. Rogness
The Ecumenical Century And The Parish, Alvin N. Rogness
Concordia Theological Monthly
I am not audacious enough to think that I can say anything new or solve any of the many problems which our day enforces upon us. I hope I may call into focus some of the issues that face us now and others that assuredly will be upon us in acute shape in the years ahead. At the outset I want in all candor to say that I am more terrified than exhilarated by the ministry which my son and his generation must face in the next 40 years. And it follows that I must confess that I have no …
August Hermann Francke, 1663-1963, Philip J. Schoeder
August Hermann Francke, 1663-1963, Philip J. Schoeder
Concordia Theological Monthly
Why remember August Hermann Francke on the 300th anniversary of his natal year?
Certainly association and identification with Pietists and Pietism should not disqualify him for a niche in the hall of remembered saints. Though some still speak with caution and even opprobriously about Pietists and Pietism, the climate has changed especially with reference to the earlier Pietists. Much of the suspicion, detraction, and obloquy which became attached to the name and fame of Pietism stems from falsely attributing many excrescences and aberrations of later Pietism to the early founders of the movement.
The Lucan Prologue And Central Section - A Study Of Luke's Literary Method, James Ilten
The Lucan Prologue And Central Section - A Study Of Luke's Literary Method, James Ilten
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
It is the contention of this writer that, although these various theological interpretations may offer a partial explanation to the enigma of Luke's "central section," they do not adequately account for the diversity or arrangement of material. It is the writer's thesis that Luke may have selected a part of his materials for the "central section" from a collection of pericopae used to train missionaries in the early Church. That such a written or oral tradition existed before St. Luke wrote his Gospel may be inferred from St. Paul's sermon at Antioch in Pisidia, "But God raised him from the …

What Is A "Missionary," Anyway?, Graeme M. Rosenau
What Is A "Missionary," Anyway?, Graeme M. Rosenau
Concordia Theological Monthly
What is a "missionary," anyway? The answer cannot be given in 30 minutes or 30 hours. Some things that are extremely important can be said, and this iS an attempt to say them. But what is said can by its very generality point only beyond itself to the greatness of the work we missionaries have laid upon us and to the incalculable magnitude of the divine grace that has called us, even us, in our weakness and incapability, to perform it and has given us the power and promise that guarantee success. Only let us remember that the succes will …

Toward An Understanding Of Our New Sister Synod In India, M. H. Grumm
Toward An Understanding Of Our New Sister Synod In India, M. H. Grumm
Concordia Theological Monthly
At the San Francisco convention of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod the India Evangelical Lutheran Church was accepted in fellowship as a sister synod. Though this young church is still heavily dependent on our American church for support in money and missionary personnel, it has been accepted as a church in its own right, and it is following a phased plan working toward its own support. The American church may feel a justified sense of satisfaction in seeing a small but living church established in this faraway country through the work of its Mission, and it can also justly …
The Batak Protestant Christian Church, Jospeh Ellwanger
The Batak Protestant Christian Church, Jospeh Ellwanger
Concordia Theological Monthly
When the Batak Protestant Christian Church in Indonesia applied for membership in the Lutheran World Federation in 1951, one of the largest Christian church bodies in the non-West was catapulted out of relative obscurity into a limelight position on the stage of world Lutheranism. Some were quick to question the Lutheran character of the Batak Church. Chiefly they asked these questions: How can the Batak Church be Lutheran when it was founded by the Rhenish Mission Society, a combination of Lutheran and Reformed elements? And how can the Batak Church be Lutheran when it has not officially adopted the 16th-century …
Attitudes And Policies Of The Lutheran Church Toward The Negro, George Hans Liebenow
Attitudes And Policies Of The Lutheran Church Toward The Negro, George Hans Liebenow
Bachelor of Divinity
We believe that when Christian congregations make a distinction among people because of race and bypass Negroes in their program of saving souls a problem of moral theology is involved. Dr. o. P. Kretzmann, president of Valparaiso University, once offered the following steps to aid in solving a problem in moral theology, namely, first, there must be a hard cool appraisal of the situation as it is; secondly, we must turn to the New Testament and look at the divine will; thirdly, we must take the situation and the divine will and bring them together. In this paper we propose …
The History Of Lutheran City Missions In Saint Louis, John Paul Ellwanger
The History Of Lutheran City Missions In Saint Louis, John Paul Ellwanger
Bachelor of Divinity
As great men often disappear in the shadows of still greater men, so City Missions in St. Louis has lost the public spotlight to these other more brightly shining lights. It will be one of the purposes of this thesis to throw as much light as possible on the significance of Lutheran City Missions in Lutheran life in St. Louis during the first part of the twentieth century.

The Missionary Endeavors Of Marcus Whitman, Michael C. Trinklein
The Missionary Endeavors Of Marcus Whitman, Michael C. Trinklein
Bachelor of Divinity
It shall be the writer’s objectives to first of' all gather together, correlate, and evaluate all the possible important factors which could be termed causes for the massacre; and secondly, to try to determine how much of the responsibility for the failure of the mission can be laid directly to its leader, Dr. Marcus Whitman, who is usually exonerated completely from blame.
Saint Boniface, Lewis W. Spitz
Saint Boniface, Lewis W. Spitz
Concordia Theological Monthly
Twelve centuries have passed since St. Boniface on June 5, 754, died as a martyr on the banks of the Borne at Dokkum, in Friesland. Much is being made of the anniversary of his death. Roman Catholics have organized pilgrimages both to Dokkum, the place of his death, and to Fulda, where his body now rests. Protestants, too, have honored his memory with special services. Many thousands of both Roman Catholic and Protestant Christians have thus paid their respects to a great man of God and to their common Christian heritage.
The Relationship Between The Church's Program For Ministerial Training And Her Mission Program, W. C. Birkner
The Relationship Between The Church's Program For Ministerial Training And Her Mission Program, W. C. Birkner
Concordia Theological Monthly
The formulation of the theme to which I am to address myself indicates that our Church has become aware that the relationship of two vital parts of her program, namely, Missions and Ministerial Training, deserves some attention and a closer scrutiny at this time. The fact that occasionally the expressions "problem," or "dilemma," or "difficulty," or even "rivalry" are heard when the relationship of these two areas of activity is under discussion, is in itself an admission that this question has not always been clearly defined and a confession that not all members of the Church have arrived at the …
The Missionary Approach Of The Roman Catholic Church To The American Negro, Lester Messerschmidt
The Missionary Approach Of The Roman Catholic Church To The American Negro, Lester Messerschmidt
Bachelor of Divinity
Study of the mission strategy employed in achieving such a sizeable number of converts and the obstacles overcome in doing so constitutes the purpose of this paper. It is hoped that this study will aid in some small degree to implement our own missionary outreach to the Negro by pointing up missionary techniques and methods which can be profitably adopted or adapted to our own program, since many of the problems encountered by Roman Catholic missionaries must be faced by Lutheran missionaries, too.
