Johannine Christianity: Jewish Christianity?, James F. Mcgrath Jan 1996

Johannine Christianity: Jewish Christianity?, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Since the publication of J. Louis Martyn's Decisive Study, History and Theology in the in the Fourth Gospel (1979), there has been a growing consensus among Johannine scholars that the Gospel of John was composed in the context of conflict with the synagogue, and that it is thus best understood and interpreted against the background of Judaism and Jewish Christianity'. However, several recent studies have sought to challenge this position, primarily on two fronts: Johannine Christology (Casey 1991 :23-38) and the Johannine attitude towards the Torah (Schnelle 1992:31-36). These recent challenges to the growing consensus have also pointed to the …

Forest And Village: Popular Hindu-Christian Encounter, David C. Scott Jan 1996

Forest And Village: Popular Hindu-Christian Encounter, David C. Scott

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The realization that what is commonly spoken of as Hinduism is in reality an elite Brahmanical religion is so ubiquitous that there is no need to argue the point here. Similarly, Christianity has generally been understood in terms of classical Western theological and philosophical thought. This being the case, it is hardly surprising that until relatively recently what has been understood as the encounter and interaction of Christianity and Hinduism has been, in fact, an encounter and interaction of what we might speak of as the elite great traditions in both religious systems. Yet the fact remains that in India …

Scripture As A Source Of Knowledge In Hinduism, Anantanand Rambachan Jan 1996

Scripture As A Source Of Knowledge In Hinduism, Anantanand Rambachan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

One of Wilfred Cantwell Smith's principal concerns in What is Scripture? is to highlight the variety of texts which are construed as scripture and the variety of attitudes which human history reveals towards such texts. We may begin by noting, for example, the inappropriateness of the term "scripture" (from scribere - to write) for the Vedas because of its emphasis on the written word as opposed to the word which is heard and preserved through oral transmission. The Vedas are more aptly referred to in Sanskrit as (that which is heard) or sabda (sound), and these terms correctly underline the …

Texts Are Always With You: Christians And Their Bibles, R. S. Sugirtharajah Jan 1996

Texts Are Always With You: Christians And Their Bibles, R. S. Sugirtharajah

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

What Christians call the Bible is a cultural, ideological, ritual, and spiritual depository of a people who live din West Asia. Although Christians perceive it as the Book (in spite of the implied plural meaning in Greek), it is a composition of several books, embodying the collective and individual divine-human encounters of two communities - Jews and the early converts to the Jesus movement in the Mediterranean region. The Bible has two testaments, to which the adjectives "Old" and "New" are prefixed. These adjectival prefixes give the impression that the one is outdated, archaic, and no longer applicable, and the …

The Role Of Hindu Scripture In Salvation, William C. Allen, Bibhuti S. Yadav Jan 1996

The Role Of Hindu Scripture In Salvation, William C. Allen, Bibhuti S. Yadav

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In this paper we reflect on the role of scripture in salvation in Hinduism and Christianity. We all know that differences among various Hindu scripturologies are severe and profound. Diversities of understandings of the nature and role of scripture in salvation abound no less within the various Christian traditions. There is no Hindu consensus regarding the scripture's role in salvation. Even within orthodox Hinduism the differences on this theme are fundamental. For instance. the Vedanta of Sankara reads the Vedas as descriptive of Brahman, the knowledge and realization of which constitutes moksa which Sankara equates with meta-material, meta-social, pure being. …

A Response To The Symposium On Sri Dharampal's "Bharatiya Chitta Manas And Kala", Jitendra Bajaj, Mandyam Doddamane Srivivas Jan 1996

A Response To The Symposium On Sri Dharampal's "Bharatiya Chitta Manas And Kala", Jitendra Bajaj, Mandyam Doddamane Srivivas

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The symposium on Sri Dharampal's Bharatiya Chitta manas and Kala, organized by Prof. Fancis Clooney and carried in the last issue of the Hindu-Christian Studies Bulletin (Vol. 8, 1995), is indeed a significant contribution to the debate Sri Dharampal's essay sought to initiate. We are grateful to Prof. Clooney and the four learned commentators who, with their diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, clearly grasped the essence and importance of Sri Dharampal's effort, which in brief is to help launch a new Indian enterprise to comprehend and re-assert the essential civilizational genius of India within the present-day reality of the …

Reginald Heber And Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Geoffrey Cook Jan 1996

Reginald Heber And Hindu-Christian Dialogue, Geoffrey Cook

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Hinduism and Christianity have lived closely together in parts of the Subcontinent since the Apostle Thomas's missionary visit in the first century of the Christian era. But in the last five centuries of direct European and South Asian contact that relationship has gained a Subcontinent-wide propinquity, and has often been quite competitive, for the meeting between India and Europe was between tradition and modernity.

Viewpoint: Hindu-Christian "Studies": Some Confessions From The Boundaries, Fred W. Clothey Jan 1996

Viewpoint: Hindu-Christian "Studies": Some Confessions From The Boundaries, Fred W. Clothey

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

There are times I think the term Hindu-Christian "studies" or even Hindu-Christian "dialogue" is a misnomer and a fantasy. This is so for several reasons. For one thing, there is a long history in which such "study" or conversation has been a monologue, a one-way street or an interpretation by imposition. There has been too much shouting at each other from caves and not enough honesty, negotiation, and mutual respect of personhood on the boundaries between where peoples live. For another, such engagements are not and never again can be merely one on one discourses between persons with single identities. …

Saved By The Word: The Christian Understanding Of The Relationship Between Scripture And Salvation, Michael Deroche Jan 1996

Saved By The Word: The Christian Understanding Of The Relationship Between Scripture And Salvation, Michael Deroche

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Scripture and salvation -- from a Christian point of view, both are gifts from God. yet they are not of equal import. For Christianity salvation is fundamental: it is the goal of life, indeed it is life eternal. Scripture, on the other hand, is instrumental: it leads one to salvation. As the Christian scriptures themselves put it: "... the sacred writings ... are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" (2 Tim 3:15b).
