The title of the lecture comes from Stackhouse's book of the same name, in which he critically examines the doubts about a loving God that arise out of difficult situations.

The recording begins with an introduction of the speaker by Frank Pack, also a professor of religion, and Dr. Rushford's lecture follows (03:28). Following the lecture, Dr. Pack makes some closing remarks (49:50), partially recorded here. Launched by Pepperdine University in 1980, the William M. The Triumph Song of Life" was the opening night keynote address by Jerry Rushford at the 44th annual Pepperdine Bible Lectures on April 21, 1987. Frank Pack was a longtime Pepperdine University religion professor. He is also the namesake of the Frank Pack Distinguished Christian Scholar Lecture Program, which was named in his honor. Jerry Rushford, of Pepperdine University, recorded this oral history in the process of researching his book “We Preach Christ Crucified…”. The interview took place at Pack’s home in west Los Angeles, California, on his birthday (Feb. 5, 1986). The focus of the interview is mostly biographical, including his years at various Churches of Christ colleges, including Pepperdine. Della, his wife, was also present for the recording.
