Translating Quechua Multilingualism And European Multilingual Intertextuality In The Short Stories Of Edgardo Rivera Martínez, Amy Olen Jan 2024

Translating Quechua Multilingualism And European Multilingual Intertextuality In The Short Stories Of Edgardo Rivera Martínez, Amy Olen

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Quechua multilingualism is a significant feature of Andean literature written in Spanish, playing a key role as a marker of Indigeneity interacting with mestizo culture and the Spanish language. In the short stories of Peruvian author Edgardo Rivera Martínez (1933-2018), a mestizo, non-Indigenous writer, Quechua multilingualism is conveyed in different forms and has different functions. It interacts with European-language multilingual intertextuality to portray the tensions and convergences of languages and cultures in the Peruvian Central Andes. When tasked with translating Rivera Martínez’s multilingual short stories from Spanish to English, key questions arise, including the ways Quechua, as a multilingual element …

Mental Health Problems Among Elementary School Students Mandated To E-Learning: A Covid-19 Rapid Review Caveat, Renée M. D'Amore, Angelina N. Halpern, Lauren R. Reed, Kevin M. Gorey Jul 2023

Mental Health Problems Among Elementary School Students Mandated To E-Learning: A Covid-19 Rapid Review Caveat, Renée M. D'Amore, Angelina N. Halpern, Lauren R. Reed, Kevin M. Gorey

International Journal of School Social Work

Extended lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic mandated millions of students worldwide to e-learning and by default made many of their parents proxy homeschool teachers. Preliminary anecdotal, journalistic and qualitative evidence suggested that elementary school children and their parents were probably most vulnerable to this stressor and most likely to experience mental health problems because of it. We responded with a rapid review of 15 online surveys to estimate the magnitude of such risks and their predictors between 2020 and 2021. The pooled relative risk of mental health problems among school children and their parents was substantial (RR = 1.97). Moreover, …

“Measuring Silences” In The Translation Of Awa Thiam's La Parole Aux Négresses, Amanda Walker Johnson Jan 2023

“Measuring Silences” In The Translation Of Awa Thiam's La Parole Aux Négresses, Amanda Walker Johnson

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

An overlooked, yet significant text in the genealogy of intersectionality and Black feminist theory is Awa Thiam’s 1978 text La Parole aux Négresses. This paper examines the ways that the English translation, Speak Out, Black Sisters: Feminism and Oppression in Black Africa, though widening the audience for Thiam’s work, engages in various practices of erasure that undermine Thiam’s academic authority, theoretical contributions, activist insights, and ultimately, her own voice. Namely, I contend that these practices, which scholars have linked to receptions and English translations of Black Francophone texts in particular, include de-formalization, domestication, de-philosophizing, untracing, and invisibilisation. I seek not …

The Spirit Of Migrancy: Mati Diop’S Atlantique, Gigi Adair Jan 2022

The Spirit Of Migrancy: Mati Diop’S Atlantique, Gigi Adair

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Contemporary migration to Europe affects and involves the migrants themselves, the European host communities that receive them, and the people and communities left behind in the homelands of the migrants. Nonetheless, the impact of migration on the latter receives much less attention, both in media and political discussions of migration and in migration studies research. In this essay, I examine the depiction of migration to Europe, its causes and consequences, in the 2019 film Atlantique (Atlantics) by Mati Diop. The film, set in Dakar, Senegal, contextualizes contemporary migration from West Africa to Europe by depicting some of the …

An “Indian” American Congressman: Dalip Singh Saund’S Indian Heritage And His 1956 Journey To Congress, Bhadrajee S. Hewage May 2021

An “Indian” American Congressman: Dalip Singh Saund’S Indian Heritage And His 1956 Journey To Congress, Bhadrajee S. Hewage

Crossing Borders: A Multidisciplinary Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

Indian Americans have managed to become one of the most successful minority communities in the United States. With the rise of politicians such as Kamala Harris, Nikki Haley, and Bobby Jindal, Indian Americans have also reached the upper echelons of U.S. political life. Yet half a century ago, a very different picture emerges. Coming to the U.S. just three years after the 1917 Immigration Act which effectively barred Asian immigration, Dalip Singh Saund progressed from student to citizen to the U.S.’s first Asian Congressman over a period of thirty-six years. With his meteoric rise coming at a time when attitudes …

Monolingualism Of Us Poetry: Language Barriers For Poetry In Spanish, Benito Del Pliego Dec 2020

Monolingualism Of Us Poetry: Language Barriers For Poetry In Spanish, Benito Del Pliego

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The growing acceptance of US Latino voices in the US literary canon is also bringing to the attention of the critics the limitations of this inclusiveness. US Latino or Hispanic literatures are a far more complex phenomenon than commonly portrayed. This complexity is interlaced with the even wider frame of the multi-ethnic, multi-lingual literary realities of the US, a country where languages other than English have been historically relegated to a secondary role by concerted policies of cultural domination. In such context, it is relevant to explores the social origins and the implications of the systematical bias against the literary …

“You’Re In Apple Land But You Are A Lemon:” Connection, Collaboration, And Division In Early ‘70s Indian Country, John T. Truden Jul 2020

“You’Re In Apple Land But You Are A Lemon:” Connection, Collaboration, And Division In Early ‘70s Indian Country, John T. Truden

Online Journal of Rural Research & Policy

In the first years of the 1970s, Indian Country became paradoxically more interwoven and yet also more divided. Three case studies from Oklahoma’s Indigenous communities illustrate this transformation. Beginning in the mid-1960s, a boom in Indigenous media allowed Indigenous people to communicate far more quickly over once prohibitive distances. In western Oklahoma, Southern Cheyenne parents relied upon Navajo ideas to form their own indigenous controlled school in early 1973. As a result of these exchanges between previously removed people, new indigenous communities emerged along ideological lines rather than those of tribal citizenship or ethnic identity. A few months earlier, the …

Seeing (As) The Eroticized And Exoticized Other In Spanish Im/Migration Cinema: A Critical Look At The (De)Criminalization Of Migrants And Impunity Of Hegemonic Perpetrators, Maureen Tobin Stanley

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article examines cinematic perspective in six Spanish im/migration films to show that by resituating the identification from an alignment with that of a hegemonic character (who accepts the systematic bias that confers impunity to perpetrators) to identification with a criminalized migrant subject, these films 1) denounce systemic intersectionality that confers impunity to perpetrators and criminalizes the racialized and/or feminized other and 2) aim at fostering empathy in the hegemonically identified viewer. Parameters for the selection of the six films are: immigration to Spain, African (whether geographic or ethnic) origins, eroticization of the migrant, objectification/(ab)use/commodification/victimization of the Other, criminalization of …

Writing The Experiences And (Corporeal) Knowledges Of Women Of Color Into Educational Studies: A Colloquium, A. B. V. M. M. Armstrong-Carela-Martínez-Pérez-Ruiz Guerrero

Pedagogy & (Im)Possibilities across Education Research (PIPER)

In this colloquium, we share collaborative ideas that came about during a weekend retreat. We center our discussions on Chicana and Black feminisms and Womanism, specifically addressing how women of color feminisms inspire us; imagining/defining space; tensions within our sisterhoods; transforming (inner)coloniality by embracing our lived herstories; and how Chicana and Black feminisms and Womanism transform educational studies. We leave readers with hopes for our-selves, our fields, our sisters, and for the world. While not exact tellings of our pláticas during our retreat, we capture and share the essence of burning questions, ideas, and hopes that arose for us when …

Perineum: Erika Lopez, Debra A. Castillo

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Erika Lopez is the author of five lavishly illustrated, fictionalized memoirs as well as a postcard book and a performance piece, “Nothing Left but the Smell.” All of her books are road tales of sorts, texts that grapple with the inchoate and often illegible need to assert herself as bi: bi-racial, bi-sexual, bi-cultural, bi-coastal, but also more and different than merely bi (“I contain multitudes,” said Walt Whitman), disrespectful of boundaries, genders, and genres, and unwilling to settle down with one person or one story even when the constant movement and empting out exhausts her. Even worse, in some ways; …

Maryse Condé’S Heremakhonon As A Noir Novel, Irina Dzero

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

A noir genre analysis of Heremakhonon explains the confusion, sensuality, red herrings, and flashbacks that permeate the novel, as well as the primacy of an investigation to the plot. Upon arriving in a newly independent West African country, protagonist Veronica witnesses the arrest of a political activist who opposed the ruling elite. When she investigates his disappearance, Veronica realizes that she is complicit with the elite perpetrators.
