The Pastor A Bible Student, W. Arndt
The Pastor A Bible Student, W. Arndt
Concordia Theological Monthly
To make an attempt in this journal or anywhere else to create enthusiasm in ministers for a study of the Holy Scriptures would seem to be about as superfluous as urging a professional concert Pianist to keep in practise by frequently playing approved exercises, or a surgeon to continue performing and witnessing operations. Is there a minister who is not convinced that faithful, regular study of the Bible is a necessity for him? Still, human weakness being what it is and hindrances of thorough, consistent Bible-study by the pastor increasing with alarming rapidity, a few words on this subject, introductory …

The Pastor And His Guide, O. A. Geiseman
The Pastor And His Guide, O. A. Geiseman
Concordia Theological Monthly
When God created Adam and Eve, He did not at once provide them with a radio set and a vacuum sweeper, but He did say to them, Subdue the world. The task of complying with that command has taxed human strength, wisdom, and resourcefulness from that day unto this. Employing processes of investigation and experimentation, man has slowly, unevenly perhaps, but nevertheless surely made remarkable progress in his struggle to subject the forces of nature to his will.

When King Saul went to the witch at Endor, he was looking for some measure of certainty about the outcome of an undertaking of greatest moment at the time - the conquest of the Philistines, 1 Sam. 28. No doubt a similar desire helps to explain the fact that an astrologer in Chicago could induce a hundred regular clients, all of them prominent business men, to pay him $1,000 apiece annually.

In discussing this topic, it may become necessary to touch upon a number of points which are closely related to it. Such points are matters pertaining to the transmission of information, teaching processes and procedures, the problem or task involved in the various acts connected with the stimulation of self-activity and the motivation of learning and other considerations pertaining to curriculum construction.

The Pastor And Synod, J. W. Behnken
The Pastor And Synod, J. W. Behnken

A synod is not a divine institution, but a voluntary organization. Nowhere is there a Scriptural command that congregations must unite. Of course, we have the Scriptural example, Acts 15, of the first convention of delegates from congregations which assembled at Jerusalem.
The Doctrine Of Justtfication According To Bernard Of Clairvaux, Theo. Dierks
The Doctrine Of Justtfication According To Bernard Of Clairvaux, Theo. Dierks
Concordia Theological Monthly
Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) was the most influential man of his day. He was the counselor and adviser of Popes, princes, and the common man; he was an eloquent preacher (his sermons are strikingly Scriptural and remarkably free from quotations from the Church Fathers); he was the composer of beautiful hymns (the best-known hymns of his school are "O Bleeding Head and Wounded," "Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee," and "O Jesus, King Most Wonderful"); but above all he was a sincerely pious and truly humble Christian.

The Church And Social Problems, P. E. Kretzmann
The Church And Social Problems, P. E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
There can be no doubt that the chief aim of the Christian Church, in fact the one aim which the Church as such is to pursue, is that assigned to her in the Great Commission, namely, to preach the Gospel of the salvation of men through the mercy of God in Christ to all nations. It was in this sense that John the Baptist performed his ministry, in preaching repentance and remission of sins, in accordance with the prophecy of his aged father: 'Thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of …

Outline For Sermon On Chrisitan Education, Paul Koenig

"Is the young man safe?" That was the anxious Iinquiry of a worried father. Is the young man or woman safe? Are the children safe? This should be the anxious question of the Church. "Whether or not they are safe, what will become of them later in life, depends to a very great extent on what we do for them during their childhood days, upon the training we give them.” Much emphasis is laid in our country on education. One out of every four persons is said to be enrolled in quest of some form of education.
Approaches To Bible-Study In A Metropolitan Center, A. R. Kretzmann
Approaches To Bible-Study In A Metropolitan Center, A. R. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
To many of our people the Bible is a closed book, not because of the difficulty of understanding it, but because the approaches to it, outside of the sermon, have always been rather ponderous and seemingly uninteresting. A fortunate impatience and natural rebellion against such an attitude has caused us to seek new approaches to Bible-study which would be thoroughly dignified and truly enriching. The people who have found the way back to the Scriptures through these approaches have contributed to one of the most heartening experiences of a metropolitan ministry. We are not here in order to defend any …

The Pastor And Youth;, O. P. Kretzmann
The Pastor And Youth;, O. P. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
At any given moment in his ministry the pastor in active congregational service is face to face with three age groups. A local church is a cross-section of the family of God. There are the old, for whom the ministrations of the servant of the Word are largely a preparation for a near eternity. There are the middle-aged who must be carried through sorrow and defeat even though their religious habits and attitudes have been fixed by the years. And there are the young, at one and the same time a very precious and a very unstable part of the …

Modern Psychiatry And The Bible, H. D. Mensing
Modern Psychiatry And The Bible, H. D. Mensing
Concordia Theological Monthly
A discussion of modem psychiatry and the Bible in the compass of our allotted space cannot pretend to be exhaustive, but must of necessity be a mere sketch, touching here and there the points that seem of special interest for our purpose. We shall, in fact, limit ourselves to the discussion of current technical terms and then, as we proceed, stop to examine some of the problems as they come within the sphere of our observation. The very nature of our subject-matter must preclude any dogmatic statements, except where a statement of Holy Scripture is not concerned; for psychology with …
